Flow over a two-dimensional obstacle and dispersion of a heavier-than-air gas near the obstacle were studied. Two species, one representing air and the other representing the heavier-than-air gas were treated. Equations for mass and momentum were cast in mass-averaged form, with turbulent Reynolds stresses and mass fluxes modeled using eddy-viscosity and diffusivity hypotheses. A two-equation k- turbulence model was used to determine the effective turbulent viscosity. Streamline curvature and buoyancy corrections were added to the basic turbulence formulation. The model equations were solved using finite difference techniques. An alternating-direction-implicit (ADI) technique was used to solve the parabolic transport equations and a direct matrix solver was used to solve the elliptic pressure equation.Mesh sensitivities were investigated to determine the optimum mesh requirements for the final calculations. It was concluded that at least 10 grid spaces were required across the obstacle width and 15 across the obstacle height to obtain valid solutions. A non-uniform mesh was used to concentrate the grid points at the top of the obstacle.Experimental measurements were made with air flow over a 7.6 by 7.6 cm obstacle in a boundary-layer wind tunnel. Smoke visualization revealed a low-frequency oscillation of the bubble downstream of the obstacle. Hot-wire anemometer data are presented for the mean velocity and turbulent kinetic energy at the mid-plane of the obstacle and the mid-plane of the downstream recirculation bubble. A single hot-wire probe was found to be suitable for determining mean streamwise velocities with an accuracy of 11 %. The downstream recirculation bubble was unsteady and had a length range from 3 to 8 obstacle lengths.The experimental results for flow over the obstacle were compared with numerical calculations to validate the numerical solution procedure. A sensitivity study on the effect of curvature correction and variation of turbulence model constants on the numerical solution was conducted. Calculations that included the curvature correction model gave a downstream recirculation bubble length of 5.9 obstacle lengths while excluding the correction reduced this length to 4.4.In the second part of the study, numerical calculations were performed for the dispersion of a heavier-than-air gas in the vicinity of the two-dimensional obstacle. Characteristics of an adiabatic boundary layer were used in these calculations. The densities of the contaminant gases were 0, 25 and 50% greater than the air density. Calculations were performed with the contaminant injection source upstream and downstream of the obstacle.Use of the pressure gradient model reduced the size of the dense gas cloud by as much as 12%. The curvature correction model also affected the cloud expanse by reducing the effective turbulent viscosity in the downstream recirculation bubble. The location of the injection source had the largest impact on the cloud size. The area of the cloud within the 5 % contour was three times larger for downstream injection than for upstream injection.  相似文献

Two-dimensional gas dispersion in the atmosphere was investigated experimentally using an atmospheric boundary-layer wind tunnel. Argon gas, which is one and one half times heavier than air, was injected two-dimensionally and uniformly near two square objects at the rates of 3.55 and 4.93 m3/min per lateral meter from the bottom of the wind tunnel floor through a porous metal plate. The gas injection source was located at one object distance upstream of the first square object. Gas concentrations and velocities of the flow field were measured using an aspirating hot-film probe and a low velocity flow analyzer, respectively. The gas was dispersed no higher than approximately 2.0 object heights near the objects, and dispersed no higher than 3.5 object heights at the location of downwind distances of nine object lengths for the injection rates tested. The gas concentrations between the injection source and the first object were about 4 to 5 times higher than the gas concentrations of the other locations. The gas concentrations were 2 to 3% in the recirculation zone between the two objects, and were less than 2% behind the second object. The air-gas mixtures in the recirculation zone between the two objects and within the wake recirculation bubble behind the second object were well mixed and no gravitational settlement was detected in those regions. However, as the mixture moved down-stream, the gravitational settlement occurred beyond the wake recirculation bubble. This paper demonstrates that it is possible to model a two-dimensional heavy gas release in the atmosphere using wind-tunnel simulation with properly matched similitude parameters.  相似文献

After several years of decreased annual rainfall and water shortages, the Chilean society is demanding that forest plantations take accountability of their role in consuming scarce water resources. Evidence has shown that interception losses are considerable when determining water production in watersheds. The aim of this study was to determine if site and stand variables explain interception losses by Chilean forests for the development of an empirical model that could predict the potential impacts of forest management practices and land‐use change. A total of 127 data from annual water balance plot studies in Chile were compiled to derive relationships between interception and precipitation, species composition, plantation age and other stand and site variables. The reviewed data indicated that annual interception losses are mainly explained by annual rainfall and basal area of the forest stands, with a clear difference between the northern (dryer) and southern (wetter) regions of Chile. For a wide latitudinal gradient, forest composition and age, annual interception accounted for approximately 21% of incoming precipitations. Broadleaved forest stands (including native broadleaved and eucalypt forests) generally presented higher interception losses than conifers. Interception was higher in northern zones, indicating that forests have greater impacts on water resources in dryer regions. Our results were compiled in empirical models, which can be used to estimate forest interception in a latitudinal gradient in Chile and to support policy making. These results are also proposed as an approximate analogue of the changes in forest interception losses, which may occur as vegetation belts shift latitudinally as a result of the impact of climate change. Predicted brightness temperatures for a variety of cometary nucleus models, consisting of homogeneous layers comprised of mixtures of water ice and refractory grains, are presented as functions of wavelength. These illustrative spectra are computed using simple radiative transfer techniques adapted from modeling of terrestrial ice and snow fields. The computed millimeter-wave spectra are sensitive to the values of physically significant nucleus parameters such as crust thickness, the subsurface temperature gradient, and the boundary temperature of the sublimating surface. It appears that millimeter-wave sensing from an interplanetary spacecraft is an effective means for distinguishing between alternate models of the nucleus and for inferring the rough physical state of substrata; modern theories on the nature of the nucleus indicate that sublimation from the substrata provides the gas phase cometary volatiles that are actually observed from ground-based and Earth-orbiting instruments. Antenna beam dilution is a major obstacle for ground-based molecular spectral line radio observations (e.g., water and ammonia) of comets but a modest millimeter-wave radiometer system in the near vicinity of the comet would not be subject to this problem. Such a system can make definitivebservations of several candidate parent molecules in the gas phase and should contribute to the understanding of the physics of the inner coma.  相似文献

Global images of the Earth's inner magnetosphere and its response to the coronal mass ejection (CME) on the 15 July 2000 were obtained by the IMAGE spacecraft. The images were taken in energetic neutral atoms (ENA) by the High-Energy Neutral Atom (HENA) imager. ENAs are produced by charge exchange between the hot ion population of the magnetosphere and the cold neutral hydrogen geocorona. The ENA images show how plasma is injected into the nightside magnetosphere as the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) turns strongly southward. As the IMF B z increases and the storm intensity decreases, the ENA images show that the ring current becomes closed and symmetric as IMF B z reaches positive values.  相似文献

Triaxial fracture tests with overburden pressures ranging from 0.69 to 136 MPa were performed to determine the material parameters involved in a cap model for limestone. Three material parameters A, B and C, were evaluated through Powell's optimization method and the remaining parameters through simulation-curve fitting procedure. The resulting cap model was tested against separate triaxial fracture and hydrostatic compression tests. Modification of the original hardening function, as proposed by DiMaggio and Sandler, provided an improved fit for the experimental data.  相似文献

The area ratio of umbra to penumbra (Au/Ap) was investigated for a series of 126 sunspots observed around the maximum of solar activity in 1980. Plotting log (Au) as function of log (Ap) a linear relation is obtained with a slope of 1.10, yielding an average ratio Au/Ap of 0.24 for small spots and of 0.32 for large spots. This deviates noticeably from the commonly adopted constant value of Au/Ap = 0.21 (Allen, 1973) used e.g. for modelling the sunspot irradiance deficit (cf. Low noise photoelectric measurements of the line profile of the g = 0 Fe line gl 5576.097 combined with determinations of the wavelength shift of its centre calibrated by use of an I 2 absorption tube are reported. Measurements taken at various limb distances (1.0 cos 0.2) and along 4 different diameters of the Sun are used to investigate the behaviour of the line asymmetry (C-shape) and wavelength shift of the line centre as functions of cos and of latitude and to search for possible pole-equator differences.An accuracy of approx. 0.8 mÅ r.m.s. is achieved for the determination of the centre of the solar line relative to the iodine lines and of 0.3 mÅ to 1 mÅ r.m.s. for the relative variations of the C-shape. The analysis shows a significant difference between the limb-effect curves along polar and equatorial diameters for cos 0.4 and changes of the C-shape for 0.9 cos 0.6 with a rather strong indication of a latitude dependence of the C-shape. This latitude dependence may account for the so-called ears observed by Howard et al.
