Modelling Syntectonic Sedimentation: Combining a Discrete Element Model of Tectonic Deformation and a Process-based Sedimentary Model in 3D 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper presents a new numerical program able to model syntectonic sedimentation. The new model combines a discrete element
model of the tectonic deformation of a sedimentary cover and a process-based model of sedimentation in a single framework.
The integration of these two methods allows us to include the simulation of both sedimentation and deformation processes in
a single and more effective model. The paper describes briefly the antecedents of the program, Simsafadim-Clastic and a discrete
element model, in order to introduce the methodology used to merge both programs to create the new code. To illustrate the
operation and application of the program, analysis of the evolution of syntectonic geometries in an extensional environment
and also associated with thrust fault propagation is undertaken. Using the new code, much more complex and realistic depositional
structures can be simulated together with a more complex analysis of the evolution of the deformation within the sedimentary
cover, which is seen to be affected by the presence of the new syntectonic sediments. 相似文献

Huai River Basin, as the sixth largest river basin in China, has a high‐regulated river system and has been facing severe water problems. In this article, the changing patterns of runoff and precipitation at 10 hydrological stations from 1956 to 2000 on the highly regulated river (Shaying River) and less‐regulated river (Huai River) in the basin are evaluated at the monthly, seasonal and annual scales using the Mann–Kendall test and simple linear regression model. The results showed that: (1) No statistically significant trends of precipitation in the upper and middle Huai River Basins were detected at the annual scale, but the trend of annual runoff at Baiguishan, Zhoukou and Fuyang stations in Shaying River decreased significantly, whereas the others were not. Moreover, the decreasing trends of runoff for most months were significant in Shaying River, although the trend of monthly precipitation decreased significantly only in April in the whole research area and the number of months in the dry season having significantly decreasing trends in runoff was more than that in the wet season. (2) The rainfall–runoff relationship was significant in both highly regulated river and less‐regulated river. In regulated river, the reservoirs have larger regulation capacity than the floodgates and thus have the smaller correlation coefficient and t‐value. In Huai River, the correlation coefficients decreased from upper stream to downstream. (3) The regulation of dams and floodgates for flood control and water supply was the principal reason for the decreasing runoff in Huai River Basin, although the decreasing precipitation in April in this basin was statistically significant. The findings are useful for recognizing hydrology variation and will provide scientific foundation to integrated water resources management in Huai River Basin. Despite a keen awareness of climate change, northern Indigenous Peoples have had limited participation in climate-change science due to limited access, power imbalances, and differences in worldview. A western science emphasis on facts and an indigenous emphasis on relationships to spiritual and biophysical components indicate important but distinct contributions that each knowledge system can make. Indigenous communities are experiencing widespread thawing of permafrost and coastal erosion exacerbated by loss of protective sea ice. These climate-induced changes threaten village infrastructure, water supplies, health, and safety. Climate-induced habitat changes associated with loss of sea ice and with landscape drying and extensive wildfires interact with northern development to bring both economic opportunities and environmental impacts. A multi-pronged approach to broadening indigenous participation in climate-change research should: 1) engage communities in designing climate-change solutions; 2) create an environment of mutual respect for multiple ways of knowing; 3) directly assist communities in achieving their adaptation goals; 4) promote partnerships that foster effective climate solutions from both western and indigenous perspectives; and 5) foster regional and international networking to share climate solutions. 相似文献

Plumboselite, ideally Pb3O2(SeO3), is a new selenite (IMA2010?C028) from the Tsumeb mine, Namibia. It occurs as fibres on clausthalite and is also associated with smithsonite, mimetite and vaterite. Plumboselite occurs in subparallel to divergent clusters of thin, flattened, colourless fibres up to 0.3?mm in length, but not exceeding 5???m in width and 2???m in thickness. The fibres are elongated parallel to [001] and flattened on {010}, with {010} the only form observed. The crystals have a dull to adamantine lustre and a white streak. The tenacity is brittle and the Mohs hardness is estimated to be between 2 and 3. Plumboselite crystals are optically biaxial with parallel extinction and are length fast in all orientations. The Gladstone-Dale relationship predicts n av?=?2.115. The high indices of refraction and small crystal size prevented the determination of other optical properties. The calculated density is 7.814?g/cm3. The empirical formula (based on 5 O atoms) is Pb2.92Ca0.01Se1.03O5. Plumboselite is orthorhombic, space group Cmc21, a?=?10.5384(11), b?=?10.7452(13), c?=?5.7577(7) ?, V?=?651.98(12) ?3 and Z?=?4. The five strongest lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [d obs in ?/(I)/hkl]: 3.155/(100)/221; 1.956/(26)/042,402; 2.886/(22)/311,002; 1.713/(21)/223; 2.691/(17)/040. The crystal structure was solved from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and refined to R 1?=?0.0371 on the basis of 200 unique reflections with F o?>?4??F. The structure is based on double [O2Pb3] chains of edge-sharing oxo-centered [OPb4] tetrahedra along c, between which are sited SeO3 triangles. A much understudied aspect of flood inundation is examined, i.e. upland environments with topographically complex floodplains. Although the presence of high‐resolution topographic data (e.g. lidar) has improved the quality of river flood inundation predictions, the optimum dimensionality of hydraulic models for this purpose has yet to be fully evaluated for situations of both topographic and topological (i.e. the connectivity of floodplain features) complexity. In this paper, we present the comparison of three treatments of upland flood inundation using: (a) a one‐dimensional (1D) model (HEC‐RAS v. 3·1·2) with the domain defined as series of extended cross‐sections; (b) the same 1D model, but with the floodplain defined by a series of storage cells, hydraulically connected to the main river channel and other storage cells on the floodplain according to floodplain topological characteristics; (c) a two‐dimensional (2D) diffusion wave treatment, again with explicit representation of floodplain structural features. The necessary topographic and topological data were derived using lidar and Ordnance Survey Landline data. The three models were tested on a 6 km upland reach of the River Wharfe, UK. The models were assessed by comparison with measured inundation extent. The results showed that both the extended cross‐section and the storage cell 1D modes were conceptually problematic. They also resulted in poorer model predictions, requiring incorrect parameterization of the main river to floodplain flux in order to approach anything like the level of agreement observed when the 2D diffusion wave treatment was assessed. We conclude that a coupled 1D–2D treatment is likely to provide the best modelling approach, with currently available technology, for complex floodplain configurations.
