Recent observations of flux-gradient anomalies in atmospheric flow close to forests, and similar rough surfaces, prompted a wind-tunnel investigation in which cross-wire anemometry was used to study the vertical development and horizontal variability of adiabatic flow over five regularly arrayed rough surfaces, encompassing a 32-fold range of roughness concentration . The roughness elements were cylinders, 6 mm in both height and diameter.Below a layer in which the velocity profile is semi-logarithmic, two surface influences upon the mean velocity field can be distinguished: wake diffusion and horizontal inhomogeneity. The wake diffusion effect causes non-dimensional vertical velocity gradients to be smaller than in the semi-logarithmic region; at least for elements with aspect ratios l/h 1, it is governed by the transverse dimension l of the roughness elements, and is observed when z > h + 1.5l (where z is height above the underlying surface, and h is the height of the roughness elements). A simple diffusivity model successfully describes the horizontally averaged velocity profiles in the region of wake influence, despite conceptual disadvantages. The horizontal inhomogeneity of the flow is negligible when z > h + D (D being the inter-element spacing), and does not entirely mask the wake diffusion effect except over very sparsely roughened surfaces ( 0.02). A criterion for negligibility of both effects, and hence for applicability of conventional turbulent diffusivity theory for momentum, is z > h + 1.5D. These results are compared with atmospheric data, and indicate that wake diffusion may well cause some underestimation of the zero-plane displacement d over typical vegetated surfaces. 相似文献

Two extensive marine tephra layers recovered by piston coring in the western equatorial Atlantic and eastern Caribbean have been correlated by electron microprobe analyses of glass shards and mineral phases to the Pleistocene Roseau tuff on Dominica in the Lesser Antilles arc. Tephra deposition and transport to the deep sea was primarily controlled by two processes related to two different styles of eruptive activity: a plinian airfall phase and a pyroclastic flow phase. A plinian phase produced a relatively thin (1–8 cm) airfall ash layer in the western Atlantic, covering an area of 3.0 × 105 km2 with a volume of 13 km3 (tephra). The majority of the airfall tephra was transported by antitrade winds at altitudes of 6–17 km. Aeolian fractionation of crystals and glass occurred during transport resulting in an airfall deposit enriched in crystals relative to the source. Mass balance calculation based on crystal/glass fractionation indicates an additional 12 km3 of airfall tephra was deposited outside the observed fall-out envelope as dispersed ash.Discharge of pyroclastic flows into the sea along the west coast of Dominica initiated subaqueous pyroclastic debris flows which descended the steep western submarine flanks of the island. 30 km3 of tephra were deposited by this process on the floor of the Grenada Basin up to 250 km from source. The Roseau event represents the largest explosive eruption in the Lesser Antilles in the last 200,000 years and illustrates the complexity of primary volcanogenic sedimentation associated with a major explosive eruption within an island arc environment. 相似文献

Movements of spawning rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax, were followed in the Parker River estuary, Massachusetts during 1974 and 1975. Fish marked with vinyl subcutaneous tags (n=1,492) or fin clips (n=577) were recaptured on three separate spawning sites in three different tributaries; the distribution patterns of marked fish indicated a homogeneous spawning stock. Interstream movement may have been facilitated by tidal transport since smelt ascended to the spawning sites on flood tides and moved downstream as tides ebbed. Rates of recapture of fish tagged on the spawning areas were 2.61 and 5.61 times greater for males than females in 1974 and 1975 respectively. Individual tagged males were recovered up to four times during the spawning period; females were recaptured a maximum of once. The proportion of age II and older females sampled from the angling fishery prior to spawning in 1975 (47.38%) was greater than the cumulative proportion sampled on the spawning sites (11.93%) due to longer spawning period of individual males. 相似文献

The gross distribution of seismicity in North America suggests the interior platform and shield provinces are relatively stable and significantly affect the intraplate stress field. Focal mechanisms and in-situ stress measurements indicate the cratonic areas of North America must be relatively immobile with respect to the eastern and western portions of the continent. While it has been known for a long time that in general the albedo of a surface depends on incidence angle, this fact is commonly neglected in many calculations of planetary surface temperatures. We show that the effect is especially pronounced for bright surfaces. For objects such as Ganymede and Io, the effect produces substantially cooler temperatures near the poles and terminators that would be calculated under the assumption of a constant albedo—a factor which may be important in determining the stability of frosts on such surfaces. 相似文献

Cloud motions were obtained from a number of images acquired in reflected solar ultraviolet light during spring and fall of 1979 from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter Cloud Photopolarimeter (OCPP) to determine the zonal mean circulation of the atmosphere of Venus at the cloud top level. The meridional profile of the zonal component of motion is somewhat different from that previously obtained from Mariner 10 and preliminary Pioneer Venus observations, although the equatorial magnitude is about the same (?94 m/sec). The mean meridional motion is toward the south pole south of about 5° south latitude, and toward the north pole north of this latitude, with peak mean magnitudes of about 7 m/sec polewards of 20° north and 40° south latitudes in the respective hemispheres. From the few measurements obtained at higher latitudes the magnitude of the mean meridional component appears to decrease although it is still directed toward the respective poles. Due to the evolution of the cloud patterns over the duration of the images from which the cloud velocities are obtained, the uncertainties in the mean zonal and meridional components may be as large as 5–10 and 2–4 m/sec, respectively. Preliminary estimates of meridional momentum transport show that the mean circulation dominates the eddy circulation transport completely, in agreement with the estimates obtained from Mariner 10 data, although the uncertainties in both the mean and eddy circulation transports are large. The momentum transports are polewards and their peak magnitudes occur at latitudes between 20° and 40° in both the hemispheres. 相似文献

This paper describes a thorough reevaluation of the procedures for reducing the data acquired at the Mt. Wilson Observatory synoptic program of solar observations at the 150-foot tower. We also describe a new program of acquiring as many scans per day as possible of the solar magnetic and velocity fields. We give a new fitting formula which removes the background velocity field from each scan. An important new feature of our reduction algorithm is our treatment of the limb shift which permits time variation in this function. We identify the difference between the limb shift along the north-south axis and the east-west axis as potentially being a result of meridional circulation. Our analysis interprets the time variation in the east-west limb shift as being the result of changes in a vertical component of the meridional circulation.The performance of the system improved in 1982 as a result of the installation of a new exit slit assembly. The amplitude of the limb shift variations found prior to 1982 is larger than is easily explained with simple ideas of meridional circulation. However, we have not been able to firmly identify instrumental causes for the variations although small changes in the band-pass of the exit slit assembly could have contributed.We have established a correlation between the observed stray light in the system and a component of the velocity field which is antisymmetric with respect to the solar central meridian. We remove this stray light effect by adding an additional term to the fitting function.Finally, we show that the inclusion of the above improvements allows us to study the torsional oscillations at high latitude using a procedure which can retain the longitude dependent information about the velocity pattern. 相似文献

Emissions from the Kilauea volcano pose significant environmental and health risksto the Hawaiian community. This paper describes progress toward simulating theconcentration and dispersion of plumes of volcanic aerosol after they emanate from thePu'u O'o vent of the Kilauea volcano.In order to produce an accurate regional forecast of the concentration and dispersionof volcanic aerosol, the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory(HY-SPLIT) model was used. Wind fields and thermodynamic data from the non-hydrostatic Mesoscale Spectral Model (MSM) were employed as input for theHY-SPLIT model. A combination of satellite remote sensing, aircraft, and ground-based observations collected during a field experiment was used to validate the model simulation of aerosol distribution.The HY-SPLIT model shows skill in reproducing the plume shape, orientation, and concentration gradients as deduced from satellite images of aerosol optical depth.Comparison of the modelled and observed values suggests that the model was able to produce reasonable plume concentrations and spatial gradients downwind of the source. Model concentrations were generally less than those observed on the leeward side of the Island of Hawaii. This deficiency may be explained by a lack of (i) background concentrations, (ii) local sources of pollution and/or (iii) sea-breeze circulation in the prognostic input wind field. These results represent early progress toward the goal of future operational application of the HY-SPLIT model to predict volcanic aerosol concentrations in Hawaii. This may help mitigate their negative impacts of plumes respiratory health, agriculture, and general aviation. 相似文献
