High-resolution sub-bottom (3.5 kHz) traverses of the southwestern portion of the Balearic Abyssal Plain between North Africa and the Balearic block show an irregular topography where rates of deformation appear to locally exceed those of sedimentation. The basin is underlain by salt of Messinian age, and diapirism has disturbed post-Messinian sediments. The 3.5 kHz records, augmented by 30,000 Joule seismic reflection profiles, indicate that this diapirism is continuing at present and is even now significantly deforming the uppermost sediment sequences.A high concentration of structural features including doming and the development of rim synclines within the 35–60 m of section penetrated are associated with diapirism. Over 70% of the domes have penetrated the surface in the studied area; of these, most display a relief of 10 m or more. In some instances, domes apparently act as dams behind which sediment is ponded. Non-faulted relief averages 3–4 m/km, notable for an abyssal plain surface. Frequently, the uppermost Holocene strata are offset several meters as a result of normal faults and grabens. This concentration of sea-floor irregularities necessarily modifies the present-day sediment dispersal pattern and rules out the uniform flow of turbidity currents and lateral continuity of sedimentation units across this basin plain.  相似文献

Concentrations and mineralogy of suspensates in the central and western Mediterranean are vertically and laterally variable. This variability is related to input by resuspension of bottom sediments and from local terrigenous sources. Bottom currents flowing through constrictions at the straits of Sicily and Gibraltar and the eastern entrance of the Alboran Sea resuspend bottom sediments, giving rise to increased concentrations of suspensates in near-bottom waters and limited inputs to higher levels. There is no evidence of a suspensate-rich bottom water in the Balearic Sea.Terrigenous sources are believed to be the cause of increasing relative amounts of montmorillonite in surface waters as they flow eastward within the Mediterranean. Montmorillomite is relatively more important in suspended sediments than in bottom sediments where kaolinite—chlorite is dominant.  相似文献

Seismic (air-gun) and 3.5-kHz systems and coring in the northwestern sector of the Hellenic Arc, Ionian Sea, serve to define the regional configuration, attitude and geometry of the unconsolidated sedimentary cover in a compressive tectonic setting. The Pliocene and Quaternary deposits are deformed to varying degrees throughout the region southwest of the island of Zakinthos. Depositional trends, overall structural configuration of the cover, and assemblages of deformation structures, including tilted, folded and faulted strata associated with a very complex topography, clearly reflect syndepositional modification in a tectonically mobile area. The structural attitude of the unconsolidated strata can be distinguished from that in tectonically active regions of the Mediterranean where extension prevails. The youthful physiography, sediment dispersal patterns and depositional distribution reveal prevailing NW—SE and NE—SW trends. Sediment deformation structures, whose axes strike primarily NW—SE, reveal a general NE—SW compressive stress trend. The geologically recent nature and orientation of the deformation are compatible with present theories concerning the evolution of the Hellenic Arc.  相似文献

Comparison of TRMM and water district rain rates over New Mexico   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
This paper compares monthly and seasonal rain rates derived from the Version 5 (V5) and Version 6 (V6) TRMM Precipitation Radar (TPR, TSDIS reference 2A25), TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI, 2A12), TRMM Combined Instrument (TCI, 2B31), TRMM calibrated IR rain estimates (3B42) and TRMM merged gauge and satellite analysis (3B43) algorithms over New Mexico (NM) with rain gauge analyses provided by the New Mexico water districts (WD). The average rain rates over the NM region for 1998–2002 are 0.91mmd?1 for WD and 0.75, 1.38, 1.49, 1.27, and 1.07mmd?1 for V5 3B43, 3B42, TMI, PR and TCA; and 0.74, 1.38, 0.87 and 0.97 mm d?1 for V6 3B43, TMI, TPR and TCA, respectively. Comparison of V5 3B43 with WD rain rates and the daily TRMM mission index (TPR and TMI) suggests that the low bias of V5 3B43 for the wet months (summer to early fall) may be due to the non-inclusion of some rain events in the operational gauge analyses that are used in the production of V5 3B43. Correlation analyses show that the WD rain rates vary in phase, with higher correlation between neighboring WDs. High temporal correlations (>0.8) exist between WD and the combined algorithms (3B42, 3B43 and TCA for both V5 and V6) while satellite instrument algorithms (PR, TMI and TCI) are correlated best among themselves at the monthly scale. Paired t-tests of the monthly time series show that V5 3B42 and TMI are statistically different from the WD rain rates while no significant difference exists between WD and the other products. The agreements between the TRMM satellite and WD gauge estimates are best for the spring and fall and worst for winter and summer. The reduction in V6 TMI (?7.4%) and TPR (?31%) rain rates (compared to V5) results in better agreement between WD estimates and TMI in winter and TPR during summer.  相似文献

Large acanthomorphic acritarchs have been found in chert of the Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation at several localities in South China, including the East Yangtze Gorges of Hubei Province, Weng’an area of Guizhou Province, and elsewhere. However, their potential for biostratigraphic subdivision and correlation of Ediacaran successions is limited by facies control, taphonomic biases, and taxonomic problems. In the Yangtze Gorges, the Doushantuo Formation is generally subdivided into four lithologic members. However, in the Weng’an area, the Doushantuo Formation comprises just a lower and upper part separated by a mid-Doushantuo erosional surface. In the Yangtze Gorges at the Zhangcunping section, the Doushantuo succession is similar to that at Weng’an. So far, the correlation between the Yangtze Gorges and Weng’an area, and elsewhere has been an issue of debate. To resolve the debate, we selected eight sections in the Yangtze Gorges area and systemically sampled chert nodules of the Doushantuo Formation, focusing in particular on the upper Doushantuo Formation. Our data confirm two different assemblages appearing separately in the second and third members, which are separated by a negative δ13C excursion (EN2). The lower assemblage is characterized by Tianzhushania and a diverse suite of large acanthomorphic acritarchs. The upper assemblage is distinguished from the lower assemblage, by (1) absence of Tianzhushania; (2) occurrence of abundant, 100–150 μm, smooth-walled spherical microfossils; (3) occurrence of highly diverse acanthomorphic acritarchs including species extending from the second member and new forms in this member; (4) occurrence of unnamed new forms of protist; and (5) occurrence of the tubular microfossil Sinocyclocylicus guizhouensis. Since the Tianzhushania-dominated assemblage is not present in Australia, it seems that only the upper acanthomorph assemblage is present and thus the lower Doushantuo acanthomorph assemblage is missing in Australia.  相似文献

The approximately 2500 ships which fly the Liberian flag are manned by officers and sailors from some 100 countries. For some, providing mariners to ships of other nations is an important means of obtaining foreign exchange and since the Liberian flag dominates world shipping, it is service aboard her vessels which is important. Obtaining nationality data for crews of the Liberian fleet and deducing the best estimates of total mariner populations for countries which contribute the most men to this fleet and, by use of Regression Analyses, it is suggested that there are several developing or advanced-status developing countries remarkably dependent upon the Liberian flag fleet for employing its mariners. Taiwan is the outstanding example. This massive flag of convenience, flag of necessity or open registry fleet is remarkable by the fact that it does not carry a proportional share of Liberia's foreign maritime commerce, a not insignificant commerce for such a small developing country. Lastly, it is proposed that perhaps some of the international organizations most outspoken in denouncing open registry fleets may in this matter have less Third World support than imagined.  相似文献

A quantitative procedure for analyzing and comparing distortion in mental maps is presented. Using a microcomputer and digitizer, and by developing a distortion index, comparisons are made by direct analysis of mental maps. A case study of the mental maps of Israel of high school and university students showed a tendency to generalize shape to simple geometric forms, with foreshortening of north-south lines and exaggeration of east-west distances.  相似文献

Little research has been done about what cities could or should do concerning potential global warming. A few cities have adopted programs to deal with impacts they perceive may occur, and a worldwide network of 100 cities involved with CO2 reduction has recently emerged. Global warming is a new issue for cities and most are only dimly aware of how it may affect them. Toronto, through the efforts of a few leaders, has become a pioneer in the development of an urban response program to global warming. It has charged a city agency to deal with global warming issues, in particular emissions reduction. Chicago is aware of the issue and is concerned about the negative impacts global warming could produce. While behind Toronto, Chicago is moving forward in a number of areas. These two cities illuminate the policy-making process for global warming at the urban level and the role {atpolicy entrepreneurs} can play at this level. In comparing the two cities, a common model of policy development is utilized.  相似文献

Human-induced sedimentological changes in Manzala Lagoon, Nile Delta, Egypt   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
 The Manzala Lagoon in Egypt's Nile Delta has become a sediment sink of reduced area and depth, with increased contaminant levels. Loss of much-needed fresh to brackish water reserves and decreased fish catches have serious ramifications. Herein, maps of temporal and regional sediment distributions in Manzala incorporate petrological and statistical analyses of 200 surficial and short core samples. These provide baseline information needed to help implement protection measures for this vital wetland. Four periods are considered: 1920s, 1940s, ∼1965, and 1990. Important depositional changes between 1940s and ∼1965 resulted from anthropogenic effects on this quasi-closed lagoon system, including industrial buildup, wetland conversion to agricultural land, and irrigation waterway development. Further modification from ∼1965 to 1990 is associated with closure of the Aswan High Dam, continued construction of waterways that discharge waste water into lagoon margins, and marine incursion into the northern lagoon. During 1990–1996 the United States experienced record-setting insured property losses due to numerous weather catastrophes, each event causing $100 million or more in losses (1991 dollars). The total loss in this 7-year period, after adjustment to inflation and other factors, was $39.65 billion with $15 billion coming from one event, Hurricane Andrew. In the 1990s, 72 catastrophes occurred, half of the total number in the 40 preceding years, 1950–1989. Although the total loss and the number of catastrophes were exceptionally high in the 1990s, the average loss per event was $551 million, only slightly more than the $467 million average for catastrophes during 1950–1989. Furthermore, storm intensities in the 1990s were slightly less than those during the preceding 40 years, revealing the excess losses of the 1990s to be a result of an extremely large number of damaging storms causing losses exceeding $100 million. Examination of historical values of most weather extremes including hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes, did not show an increase during the 1990s, revealing that weather changes were not the principal cause of more catastrophes. Examination of recent demographic shifts in the U.S. reveals two changes, each based on major re-locations to higher-valued property concentrated in areas either with a high frequency of damaging storms (Gulf and East Coast), or to where even a small but intense storm can cause huge losses (urban areas and West Coast). These shifts, plus the continuing growth of population in other storm-prone areas have greatly increased society's vulnerability to storm damage. An in-depth analysis of many conditions was required to establish that the high losses and numerous catastrophes of the 1990s were largely the result of societal changes and not major weather changes.
