Clay mineral composition and geotechnical index properties of marine clays collected from Singapore, Korea, and Japan were investigated, and the correlation of clay mineral composition with the consistency limits and activity of the clays was examined. Predominant clay minerals were kaolinite for Singapore clay, kaolinite, vermiculite, and illite for Pusan clay, and smectite for Hachirogata and Ariake clay from Japan. The activity of clay indicates that Singapore clay is classified as normal or inactive, Pusan clay as normal, and Hachirogata and Ariake clays mostly as active. Significant positive correlations were found between smectite percentage in bulk soil and the liquid and plastic limits of the clays.  相似文献

A method for the determination of the δ15N of nitrate in seawater described by Cline and Kaplan (1975) has been modified for application to low-level nitrate samples. We have minimized the reagent blank problem by replacing the Devarda's alloy with an aluminum reagent, and have also established a procedure that yields quantitative (93 ± 2%) extraction of nitrogen even at low nitrate levels. Though the amounts and the δ15N of the blank N varied from one reagent set to another, with these modifications, an overall N blank was reduced to approximately 0.80 ± 0.33 μmole N having an estimated δ15N value of −1.8‰. After blank and yield corrections, the measured isotopic composition of nitrate differed by approximately 0.1‰ from the actual value while the precision was within ±0.2‰ at the 1.25 μM level. The modified procedure was applied to seawater samples collected from the equatorial Pacific in order to compare the N blanks in field samples with those derived from laboratory experiments. The results support the suitability of the modified approach for isotopic analysis of oceanic nitrate in shallow water. Sediment trap experiments were carried out ten times in one year (1977) at three depths in Funka Bay. The material obtained in the traps was analyzed for metals, organic elements and radionuclides, together with the suspended matter in the overlying water column. Two groups with extremely different downward fluxes were found, a group with a small flux increasing with depth, and another with a large flux that is rather constant with depth and is observed only in winter. The flux in winter, and sometimes in the bottom layer below the summer thermocline was larger than the net sedimentation rate for total dry matter or for each chemical constituent. The flux was also larger than the net removal flux for 234Th. A most striking fact is that the specific activity of short-lived 234Th did not decrease in winter, indicating that the large flux in winter was not caused by the re-suspension of old bottom sediments. The concentration of suspended matter in winter was not much greater than that in other seasons. These results suggest that the downward flux observed in sediment trap experiments is not a net removal rate and that there must be an upward particulate flux in the bay.  相似文献

A new sledge net system using propulsion vehicles has been developed to sample more efficiently the demersal juveniles of marine organisms. A net attached to a sledge maneuvered by a SCUBA diver who uses operating switches on a steering handle to adjust the altitude of the sledge and the position of the tickler chains to ensure that the footcloth of the mouth of the net remains in constant contact with the bottom surface. Video camera, flow meter, compass, and dive computers are positioned on the sledge net in the view of the diver. Given that the system can attain speeds of 70 cm s−1, the net can be employed to capture highly mobile fish. Unlike most boat-based net sampling methods, the use of propulsion vehicles means that there are no sound or vibration disturbances due to the boat and tow ropes typically used to maneuver these types of sampling nets. Marine fauna was collected at monthly intervals over a two-year period in a sampling area along the southern coast of Hokkaido, Japan. A total of 2641 specimens comprising 61 species and including five species which were the first records for the region were collected. These findings suggest that the new sledge net system employing propulsion vehicles was effective for sampling demersal juveniles, particularly in situations where sledge nets towed by boats or push nets cannot be deployed.  相似文献

We examined the variation in habitat use and diet of three dominant fish species (Myoxocephalus brandti, Pholidapus dybowskii, and Pholis crassispina) in a seagrass meadow in the Akkeshi-ko estuary in northeastern Japan, where broad and dense Zostera marina beds exist, using a semi-quantitative census of the fishes and analyses of their stomach contents. Differences among the three fish species in the temporal variation in abundance of each age class (mainly 1- and 2-year age classes) indicated that the temporal pattern of utilization of the seagrass meadow were different among them. In the semi-quantitative dietary analysis, two prey categories, i.e., taxonomic group (order and suborder) and functional group, were used to explain the variation in prey composition with size-dependent changes. The six prey functional groups were classified based on the ecological traits of the prey, i.e., trophic level, size, and life type (habitat and behavior). Ontogenetic shifts in prey of the three fish species could be fully explained by a combination of the two prey categories, and not by the use of only one category (taxonomic or functional group). The pattern of ontogenetic shifts in prey differed among the fish species and size (age) classes. These results indicate that segregation of habitat (seagrass meadow) and prey group (taxonomic and functional group) is performed among the three species, which may contribute to their coexistence in this estuary.  相似文献

The estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) that develops in the lower salinity areas of macrotidal estuaries has been considered as an important nursery for many fish species. Mysids are one of the dominant organisms in the ETM, serving as a key food source for juvenile fish. To investigate the horizontal distribution and population dynamics of dominant mysids in relation to the fluctuation of physical conditions (temperature, salinity, turbidity, and freshwater discharge), we conducted monthly sampling (hauls of a ring net in the surface water) along the macrotidal Chikugo River estuary in Japan from May 2005 to December 2006. Hyperacanthomysis longirostris was the dominant mysid in the estuary, usually showing peaks of density and biomass in or close to the ETM (salinity 1–10). In addition, intra-specific differences (life-cycle stage, sex, and size) in horizontal distribution were found along the estuary. Larger males and females, particularly gravid females, were distributed upstream from the center of distribution where juveniles were overwhelmingly dominant. Juveniles increased in size toward the sea in marked contrast with males and females. The findings suggest a possible system of population maintenance within the estuary; gravid females release juveniles in the upper estuary, juveniles grow during downstream transport, young males and females mature during the upstream migration. Density and biomass were primarily controlled by seasonal changes of temperature, being high at intermediate temperatures (ca. 15–25 °C in late spring and fall) and being low at the extreme temperatures (ca. 10 °C in midwinter and 30 °C in midsummer). High density (up to 666 ind. m−3) and biomass (up to 168 mg dry weight m−3) of H. longirostris were considered to be comparable with those of copepods in the estuary.  相似文献

Near surface vertical distributions of Japanese anchovy eggs (isolated and pelagic) were studied at western Wakasa Bay, Japan. Samples were collected in horizontal tows with four plankton nets simultaneously operated at different four depths of 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 m. The egg concentration was found to decrease exponentially with depth. The egg concentration profile can be explained by considering the balance of the eggs' ascent and vertical diffusion. Taking further into account vertical difference in rising/sinking rates of the eggs, a clear accumulation of the eggs on a pycnocline, observed elsewhere, also can be explained. Vertical eddy diffusivity in the surface layer in a calm sea was 1–10 cm2 s–1, as estimated from the egg concentration profile and the velocities of the eggs in the vertical direction.  相似文献

CDB-P (phosphorus extractable by the citrate-dithionite-bicarbonate extraction procedure) was used as the indicator of bio-available inorganic P in the suspended and surface sediments in the inner part of Ariake Bay. The CDB-P pool of suspended and surface sediments in the tidal flat area was estimated to be 10 ton and 90 ton, respectively (total of 100 ton), which corresponds to 1.5 times the average dissolved inorganic phosphorus standing stock. During the summer periods of hypoxia, the CDB-P concentration in the surface sediments decreased with the decline of Eh, losing 43–47% of the CDB-P observed in April. These results suggest that the phosphorus dynamics have been affected by the decrease of resuspended sediment concentrations brought about by the reduction of the tidal currents and phosphate release from the surface sediments during frequently occurring summer hypoxia events.  相似文献

In the current study, low-background γ-spectrometry was employed to determine the 228Ra/226Ra activity ratio and 137Cs activity of 84 coastal water samples collected at six sites along the main island of Japan (Honshu Island) within the Sea of Japan, including the Tsushima Strait, and two other representative sites on Honshu Island (a Pacific shore and the Tsugaru Strait) at 1-month intervals in 2006.The 228Ra/226Ra ratio of coastal waters in the Sea of Japan exhibited similar patterns of seasonal variation, with minimum values during early summer (228Ra/226Ra = 0.6–0.8), maximum values during autumn (228Ra/226Ra = 1.5–3), and a time lag in their temporal changes ( 2.5 months and over  1300 km distance). However, the 2 other sites represented no clear periodic variation.In contrast to the positive correlation between 137Cs activity (0.6–1.7 mBq/L) and salinity (15–35), the 228Ra/226Ra ratio of coastal water samples from the Sea of Japan was not observed to correlate with salinity, and the increase in the 228Ra/226Ra ratio was not as marked (0.5–1; May–June 2004 and 2005) during the migration along Honshu Island. The input of land-derived water and/or the diffusion of radium from coastal sediments is unlikely to have affected the wide seasonal variation in the 228Ra/226Ra ratio observed in these water samples.The seasonal variation in the 228Ra/226Ra ratio recorded for the coastal waters of the Sea of Japan is considered to be mainly controlled by the remarkable changes in the mixing ratio of the 228Ra-poor Kuroshio and the 228Ra-rich continental shelf waters within the East China Sea (ECS). After passing through the Tsushima Strait, this water mass moves northeast along the coastline of the Sea of Japan as the Tsushima Coastal Branch Current (TCBC).  相似文献

An improved gas chromatographic system was constructed to analyze oceanic dissolved N2, Ar and O2 with a higher accuracy and shorter analytical time. To obtain a higher accuracy of N2, Ar and O2 measurements, the following was added to the system: (I) an air trapping system; (II) a N2–CO2 trapping system after the operation of the air trapping system; (III) an active carbon column system for separating N2 and CO2 completely and (IV) the introduction of automatic valves controlling most of the system. Compared to previous studies, the precision of the measurements of N2, Ar and O2 concentrations was higher at 0.04%, 0.05% and 0.02%, respectively, and our analytical time was shorter at 600 s. Using the improved analytical technique, concentrations of N2 (CN2, 561.69–611.81 μmol/kg) and Ar (CAr, 15.126–16.238 μmol/kg), saturation states of N2 (ΔN2, − 5.1–0.9%) and Ar (ΔAr, − 7.0 to − 1.1%) from 0 m to 3000 m depth in the western North Pacific were observed during March 2005. Based on these data, we propose a new concept for estimating the amount of bubble injection (B). The total error in calculating B was estimated to be about 20%. We estimated B from 12 to 43 μmol/kg in this region using the observational values of N2 and Ar. As each water mass had a significantly different value of B even with an error of 20%, it is possible to use it as an index of sea surface state for when each water mass is produced in the sea surface mixed layer. Moreover, based on our values of B, we estimated preformed dissolved oxygen (DO) (CpreDO, 309–332 μmol/kg) and the saturation state of CpreDO (ΔpreDO, − 7.0 to − 1.2%) in this region. Thus, the difference between CpreDO and DO content in the ocean interior may be a more useful index for biogenic organic decomposition in the ocean field compared to Apparent Oxygen Utilization (AOU). Until now, the estimation of oceanic uptake of anthropogenic CO2 has used AOU as a major parameter. Therefore, it may be necessary to re-evaluate the oceanic uptake of anthropogenic CO2 based on our new concept of B.  相似文献
