The development and propagation of a pollution gradient in the marine boundary layer over the Arabian Sea during the Intensive
Field Phase of the Indian Ocean Experiment (1999) is investigated. A hypothesis for the generation of the pollution gradient
is presented. Infrared satellite images show the formation of the pollution gradient as the leading edge of a polluted air
mass in the marine boundary layer and also its propagation over the Arabian Sea and the northern Indian Ocean. Aerosol data
measured from two research vessels over the Arabian Sea show a variation in the concentrations caused by the passage of this
pollution gradient. Depth of the pollution gradient was found to be about 800 m. A numerical model was used to simulate the
development of this gradient and its propagation over the ocean. Results show that its formation and structure are significantly
influenced by the diurnal cycle of coastal sea-land breeze circulations along India’s west coast. Transport of aerosols and
gases over the Arabian Sea in the lower troposphere from land sources appears to be through this mechanism with the other

The rise in stream stage during high flow events (floods) can induce losing stream conditions, even along stream reaches that are gaining during baseflow conditions. The aquifer response to flood events can affect the geochemical composition of both near‐stream groundwater and post‐event streamflow, but the amount and persistence of recharged floodwater may differ as a function of local hydrogeologic forcings. As a result, this study focuses on how vertical flood recharge varies under different hydrogeologic forcings and the significance that recharge processes can have on groundwater and streamflow composition after floods. River and shallow groundwater samples were collected along three reaches of the Upper San Pedro River (Arizona, USA) before, during and after the 2009 and 2010 summer monsoon seasons. Tracer data from these samples indicate that subsurface floodwater propagation and residence times are strongly controlled by the direction and magnitude of the dominant stream–aquifer gradient. A reach that is typically strongly gaining shows minimal floodwater retention shortly after large events, whereas the moderately gaining and losing reaches can retain recharged floodwater from smaller events for longer periods. The moderately gaining reach likely returned flood recharge to the river as flow declined. These results indicate that reach‐scale differences in hydrogeologic forcing can control (i) the amount of local flood recharge during events and (ii) the duration of its subsurface retention and possible return to the stream during low‐flow periods. Our observations also suggest that the presence of floodwater in year‐round baseflow is not due to long‐term storage beneath the streambed along predominantly gaining reaches, so three alternative mechanisms are suggested: (i) repeated flooding that drives lateral redistribution of previously recharged floodwater, (ii) vertical recharge on the floodplain during overbank flow events and (iii) temporal variability in the stream–aquifer gradient due to seasonally varying water demands of riparian vegetation. Petrological, volcanological and geochronological data collected at Mathews Tuya together provide constraints on paleoclimate
conditions during formation of the edifice. The basaltic tuya was produced via Pleistocene glaciovolcanism in northern British
Columbia, Canada, and is located within the Tuya volcanic field (59.195°N/130.434°W), which is part of the northern Cordilleran
volcanic province (NCVP). The edifice comprises a variety of lithofacies, including columnar-jointed lava, pillow lava, massive
dikes, and volcaniclastic rocks. Collectively these deposits record the transition from an explosive subaqueous to an effusive
subaerial eruption environment dominated by Pleistocene ice. As is typical for tuyas, the volcaniclastic facies record multiple
fragmentation processes including explosive, quench and mechanical fragmentation. All samples from Mathews Tuya are olivine-plagioclase
porphyritic alkali olivine basalts. They are mineralogically and geochemically similar to nearby glaciovolcanic centers from
the southeastern part of the Tuya volcanic field (e.g., Ash Mountain, South Tuya, Tuya Butte) as well as the dominant NCVP
rock type. Crystallization scenarios calculated with MELTS account for variations between whole rock and glass compositions
via low pressure fractionation. The presence of olivine microphenocrysts and the absence of pyroxene phenocrysts constrain
initial crystallization pressures to less than 0.6 GPa. The eruption of Mathews Tuya occurred between 0.718 ± 0.054 Ma and
0.742 ± 0.081 Ma based on 40Ar/39Ar geochronology (weighted mean age of 0.730 Ma). The age determinations provide the first firm documentation for large (>700 m
thick), pre-Fraser/Wisconsin glaciers in north-central British Columbia ~0.730 Ma, and correlate in age with glaciovolcanic
deposits in Russia (e.g., Komatsu et al. Geomorph 88: 352-366, 2007) and with marine isotopic evidence for large global ice volumes ~0.730 Ma. 相似文献

New far-infrared observations of the NH3 rotation-inversion manifolds in the spectrum of Jupiter have been inverted with the use oftthe detailed ammonia line opacity. A temperature of 160°K at a 1-bar pressure level and a temperature of 105°K for the minimum temperature of the inversion level at 0.15 bars have been derived for gaseous absorption due to NH3, H2, and He. The overall fit to the brightness temperature as a function of frequency σ is within ±1°K for 100 ≤ σ ≤ 400 cm?1 except for the centers of the NH3 rotation-inversion manifolds where for J ≥ 7 the fit is about 5°K too high. In the continuum for 400 ≤ σ ≤ 630 cm?1 the fit is within 2.5°K. Consideration of an ammonia ice haze, photodissociation of NH3 by uv radiation, NH3 abundance variation, different He/H2 ratios, and uncertainties in the data effect the temperatures at 1 bar and the temperature at the inversion layer by <7°K. The Skiddaw Slates consist of eight formations with the substantial thickness of about 30,000 ft. This geosynclinal sequence is of Arenig age though the highest formation may continue into the Lower Llanvirn. The polyphase tectonics of the Skiddaw Slates and the relationship of the overlying Borrowdale Volcanic Series are discussed. It is concluded that the Caledonian tectonic history of this part of Britain contains two paroxysms of orogenic activity. In addition to the orthodox end-Silurian orogenesis there was also an intra-Lower Ordovician orogenic episode which took place towards the close of the Llanvirn. During the earlier tectonic climax the Skiddaw Slates were deformed by two phases of folding. Their structure is, therefore, largely of pre-Borrowdale age and bears little relation to that of the overlying cover. After this dual deformation the slaty basement was truncated by erosion and is separated from the overlying Borrowdale Volcanic Series by an angular unconformity. Only the end-Silurian folding affects the volcanic superstructure and the younger Lower Palaeozoic sequence. 相似文献
