DUAL will study the origin and evolution of the elements and explores new frontiers of physics: extreme energies that drive powerful stellar explosions and accelerate particles to macroscopic energies; extreme densities that modify the laws of physics around the most compact objects known; and extreme fields that influence matter in a way that is unknown on Earth. The variability of these extreme objects requires continuous all-sky coverage, while detailed study demands an improvement in sensitivity over previous technologies by at least an order of magnitude. The DUAL payload is composed of an All-Sky Compton Imager (ASCI), and two optical modules, the Laue-Lens Optic (LLO) and the Coded-Mask Optic (CMO). The ASCI serves dual roles simultaneously, both as an optimal focal-plane sensor for deep observations with the optical modules and as a sensitive true all-sky telescope in its own right for all-sky surveys and monitoring. While the optical modules are located on the main satellite, the All-Sky Compton Imager is situated on a deployable structure at a distance of 30?m from the satellite. This configuration not only permits to maintain the less massive payload at the focal distance, it also greatly reduces the spacecraft-induced detector background, and, above all it provides ASCI with a continuous all-sky exposure.  相似文献

The 1.5 m telescope GREGOR opens a new window to the understanding of solar small‐scale magnetism. The first light instrumentation includes the Gregor Fabry Pérot Interferometer (GFPI), a filter spectro‐polarimeter for the visible wavelength range, the GRating Infrared Spectro‐polarimeter (GRIS) and the Broad‐Band Imager (BBI). The excellent performance of the first two instruments has already been demonstrated at the Vacuum Tower Telescope. GREGOR is Europe’s largest solar telescope and number 3 in the world. Its all‐reflective Gregory design provides a large wavelength coverage from the near UV up to at least 5 microns. The field of view has a diameter of 150″. GREGOR is equipped with a high‐order adaptive optics system, with a subaperture size of 10 cm, and a deformable mirror with 256 actuators. The science goals are focused on, but not limited to, solar magnetism. GREGOR allows us to measure the emergence and disappearance of magnetic flux at the solar surface at spatial scales well below 100 km. Thanks to its spectro‐polarimetric capabilities, GREGOR will measure the interaction between the plasma flows, different kinds of waves, and the magnetic field. This will foster our understanding of the processes that heat the chromosphere and the outer layers of the solar atmosphere. The design and characteristics of the Broad‐Band Imager (BBI) of GREGOR are described. One of the fundamental problems to quantifying past impact of anthropogenic activities is that long series of observational data for pollutant deposition and changes in the nutrient cycling of ecosystems (eutrophication) are often not available. Lake sediments may provide suitable archives to decipher the history of local and regional pollution and eutrophication.Here we provide quantitative high-resolution data for the history of airborne pollutants and eutrophication from sediments of five lakes in Central Chile between ca. AD 1800–2005. We use spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs) from fossil fuel combustion and excess atmospheric Cu deposition from mining activities as a proxy for atmospheric deposition. Organic carbon and nitrogen flux rates to the sediments and C/N ratios are used as a proxy for aquatic primary production and eutrophication.We show that the lake sediment SCP and Cu records are highly consistent and depict in great detail the local and regional history of urban, industrial and transportation history as reported in independent documentary sources and statistics. The pre-industrial and pre-1950 background concentrations (and flux rates) of the substances can be quantified. We can also show that technical measures taken in the early 1980s to trim down Cu emissions from the copper mines reduced the excess atmospheric Cu fallout to the lakes by about 50%.Eutrophication of the lakes did not start before ca. 1980. Prior to that time, warm season temperatures explain most of the variance in TOC and N flux to the sediments. The three dimictic lakes show only moderate eutrophication responses to enhanced N supply (as atmospheric fallout; enrichment factors for TOC and N 1.1–2.6), suggesting that mainly phosphorus controls aquatic primary production. The meromictic lake, where phosphorus recycling is likely, shows the largest response (enrichment factors for TOC and N between 9–20).While all five lakes show overall consistent and similar trends for the pollution history during the 19th and 20th century, there are significant differences in the details of the individual profiles. This suggests that local sources are highly important and the common regional (background) signal is relatively marginal. This is very different from Europe.  相似文献

Strong experimental evidence is presented that the northern polar cloud observed in Titan's atmosphere by the Cassini orbiter (VIMS) was indeed composed of ethane aerosol as proposed by Griffith et al. [2006. Science 313, 1620-1622]. We report on the condensation and phase behavior of ethane aerosol under atmospheric conditions of Titan (145 hPa, 40 km altitude, 70-90 K, 10-30 ppm ethane in nitrogen). The results were obtained in an in-situ collisional cooling experiment combined with Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Apart from the liquid phase, three crystalline phases (solid I, solid II, metastable) and the transitions into each other have been observed in the ethane aerosol. The phases were found to have a significant effect on the particles' IR spectra, their growth dynamics and the final size of the aerosols which varies between 0.5 and 4 μm (compared to 1-3 μm observed on Titan). This has strong implications on the ethane vapor pressure, precipitation and optical aerosol detection.  相似文献

In the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, we study the properties of voids and of fainter galaxies within voids that are defined by brighter galaxies. Our results are compared with simulated galaxy catalogues from the Millennium simulation coupled with a semi-analytical galaxy formation recipe. We derive the void size distribution and discuss its dependence on the faint magnitude limit of the galaxies defining the voids. While voids among faint galaxies are typically smaller than those among bright galaxies, the ratio of the void sizes to the mean galaxy separation reaches larger values. This is well reproduced in the mock galaxy samples studied. We provide analytic fitting functions for the void size distribution. Furthermore, we study the galaxy population inside voids defined by galaxies with   B J− 5 log  h < −20  and diameter larger than  10  h −1 Mpc  . We find a clear bimodality of galaxies inside voids and in the average field but with different characteristics. The abundance of blue cloud galaxies inside voids is enhanced. There is an indication of a slight blueshift of the blue cloud. Furthermore, galaxies in void centres have slightly higher specific star formation rates as measured by the η parameter. We determine the radial distribution of the ratio of early- and late-type galaxies through the voids. We find and discuss some differences between observations and the Millennium catalogues.  相似文献

It is well-known that sediment composition strongly depends on grain size. A number of studies have tried to quantify this relationship focusing on the sand fraction, but only very limited data exists covering wider grain size ranges. Geologists have a clear conceptual model of the relation between grain size and sediment petrograpic composition, typically displayed in evolution diagrams. We chose a classical model covering grain sizes from fine gravel to clay, and distinguishing five types of grains (rock fragments, poly- and mono crystalline quartz, feldspar and mica/clay). A compositional linear process is fitted here to a digitized version of this model, by (i) applying classical regression to the set of all pairwise log-ratios of the 5-part composition against grain size, and (ii) looking for the compositions that best approximate the set of estimated parameters, one acting as slope and one as intercept. The method is useful even in the presence of several missing values. The linear fit suggests that the relative influence of the processes controlling the relationship between grain size and sediment composition is constant along most of the grain size spectrum.  相似文献

The Panixer Pass Transverse Zone in the eastern Swiss Alps is oriented perpendicular to most alpine structures in the area. Its main element is the SSE-trending Crena-Martin Fold, a downward facing fold with Permian Verrucano in its core, which is cut by the Glarus Thrust. Hence Verrucano can be found below the Glarus Thrust in the Infrahelvetic Complex. Across the Panixer Pass Transverse Zone the structural buildup of the Infrahelvetic Complex changes considerably. Multiple published theories of the structural evolution are not satisfying particularly because traditional 2D geological cross-sections are insufficient to understand the 3D complexity. The main result and product of our study is a 3D structural model of the Panixer Pass Transverse Zone providing insight into its geometry. As modeling input, we produced a lithostratigraphic map and collected structural orientation data. The 3D structural model honors the observed surface geology and the expected 3D subsurface geometry. Our field data indicates that the shearing and transport direction was continuously NNW-directed, except for a phase of north-directed shearing during the early movement along the Glarus Thrust (late Calanda Phase) and related foliation development in the Helvetic Nappes. The Panixer Pass Transverse Zone developed prior to the penetrative foliation during a thrust-dominated deformation phase (Cavistrau Phase), for which we created a kinematic block model. According to this model, the Crena-Martin Fold is the result of multiple lateral ramps and related lateral fault-bend folds that all developed in a similar positon. In particular, we do not propose ENE-WSW-directed shortening to form the Crena-Martin Fold. The latter was finally cut at low angle by a dextral strike-slip fault to create the final geometry of the Panixer Pass Transverse Zone. Our kinematic model reproduces the main features of the 3D structural model and embeds well into previously proposed sequences of deformation phases.  相似文献
