A new multidisciplinary research program, started in 1981, provided new data on the stratigraphy, fauna, and human industries, as well as the first results on paleomagnetism and sedimentology, for the Ternifine site in Algeria, which yielded the earliest hominid remains known in North Africa. The fossils were deposited in a swamp or lake surrounded by a very open, dry environment. The lake was fed by artesian springs that raised the underlying Miocene sands. Although nothing suggests a camp or butchery site, we discovered the first undisputable bone artifact in this site, the earliest known in this part of Africa. According to paleontological data, 700,000 yr B.P. is a likely age for the Ternifine deposits, which is consistent with the paleomagnetic results. 相似文献

Seismic risk assessment of buildings in urban areas: a case study for Denizli,Turkey 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
This study aims to carry out a seismic risk assessment for a typical mid-size city based on building inventory from a field
study. Contributions were made to existing loss estimation methods for buildings. In particular, a procedure was introduced
to estimate the seismic quality of buildings using a scoring scheme for the effective parameters in seismic behavior. Denizli,
a typical mid-size city in Turkey, was used as a case study. The building inventory was conducted by trained observers in
a selected region of Denizli that had the potential to be damaged from expected future earthquakes according to geological
and geotechnical studies. Parameters that are known to have some effect on the seismic performance of the buildings during
past earthquakes were collected during the inventory studies. The inventory includes data of about 3,466 buildings on 4,226
parcels. The evaluation of inventory data provided information about the distribution of building stock according to structural
system, construction year, and vertical and plan irregularities. The inventory data and the proposed procedure were used to
assess the building damage, and to determine casualty and shelter needs during the M6.3 and 7.0 scenario earthquakes, representing
the most probable and maximum earthquakes in Denizli, respectively. The damage assessment and loss studies showed that significant
casualties and economic losses can be expected in future earthquakes. Seismic risk assessment of reinforced concrete buildings
also revealed the priorities among building groups. The vulnerability in decreasing order is: (1) buildings with 6 or more
stories, (2) pre-1975 constructed buildings, and (3) buildings with 3–5 stories. The future studies for evaluating and reducing
seismic risk for buildings should follow this priority order. All data of inventory, damage, and loss estimates were assembled
in a Geographical Information System (GIS) database. 相似文献

Sulfate‐reduction data from various anaerobic reactor configurations, e. g., upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASBR), completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR), and batch reactor (BR) with synthetic wastewaters, having glucose and acetate as the substrates and different levels of sulfate, were evaluated to determine the level of sulfate‐reducing activity by sulfate‐reducing bacteria coupled to organic matter removal. Anaerobic reactors were observed for the degree of competition between sulfate‐reducing sulfidogens and methane producing bacteria during the degradation of glucose and acetate. Low sulfate‐reducing activity was obtained with a maximum of 20% of organic matter degradation with glucose‐fed upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactors (UASBRs), while a minimum of 2% was observed with acetate‐fed batch reactors. The highest sulfate removal performance (72–89%) was obtained from glucose fed‐UASB reactors, with the best results observed with increasing COD/SO4 ratios. UASB reactors produced the highest level of sulfidogenic activity, with the highest sulfate removal and without a performance loss. Hence, this was shown to be the optimum reactor configuration. Dissolved sulfide produced as a result of sulfate reduction reached 325 mg/L and 390 mg/L in CST and UASB reactors, respectively, and these levels were tolerated. The sulfate removal rate was higher at lower COD/SO4 ratios, but the degree of sulfate removal improved with increasing COD/SO4 ratios. 相似文献
