Amenity-rich rural communities attract tourists, retirees, second-home owners, and others whose values are often assumed to conflict with those of longtime residents. While prior research has examined attitudinal differences across types of residents, questions about the effects of community growth on residents’ attitudes remain unanswered. This study examines whether and how seasonal and permanent residents differ within and across towns experiencing different rates of growth, and the implications of differences for attitudes toward community development and preservation. Results showed that permanent residents (both short- and long-term) perceived community development initiatives as more important to maintaining future quality of life than did seasonal homeowners. Further, community growth rates had statistically significant effects: residents of slower-growth towns attributed higher importance to both development and preservation initiatives than did residents of faster-growing towns. Growth rate was thus a stronger predictor of attitudes toward both development and preservation than resident type.  相似文献

Many regions remain poorly studied in terms of geological mapping and mineral exploration in inaccessible regions especially in the Arctic and Antarctica due to harsh conditions and logistic difficulties. Application of specialized image processing techniques is capable of revealing the hidden linear mixing spectra in multispectral and hyperspectral satellite images. In this study, the applications of Independent component analysis (ICA) and Constrained Energy Minimization (CEM) algorithms were evaluated for Landsat-8 and Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) remote sensing data for geological mapping in Morozumi Range and Helliwell Hills areas, Northern Victoria Land (NVL), Antarctica. The results of this investigation demonstrate the capability of the two algorithms in distinguishing pixel and subpixel targets in the multispectral satellite data. The application of the methods for identifying poorly exposed geologic materials and subpixel exposures of alteration minerals has invaluable implications for geological mapping and mineral exploration in inaccessible regions.  相似文献

The Korea Meteorological Administration uses soil moisture (SM) observed by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-2 (AMSR2) to monitor drought. However, it may not be appropriate for monitoring drought in South Korea due to significant underestimation of SM. In this study, we used a deep learning method that performs better than traditional statistical and physical models for reliable estimation of SM based on remotely sensed satellite data. For estimating SM, we carefully selected input variables that exhibit a feedback loop with SM. To build an effective deep learning model, we examined the influences of sampling criteria and input parameters as well as the accuracy of several deep neural networks. The selected model was cross-validated to determine its stability. The estimated SM using deep learning had a high correlation coefficient (R) of 0.89 and a low root mean square error (RMSE; 3.825%) and bias (?0.039%) compared to in-situ measurements. A time series analysis using dynamic time warping was conducted which showed that the estimated SM was almost similar to the in-situ SM. In order to investigate the improvement in SM estimation using our method, it was compared with the Global Land Data Assimilation System and AMSR2. Significant improvements in R and a reduction in error values by more than half were achieved using our method. The estimated SM has finer spatial resolution at 4 km, and it can be rapidly produced, which will be useful for drought monitoring over the Korean Peninsula in near-real-time.  相似文献

Phytoplankton size classes (hereafter, PSCs) were derived from satellite ocean color data using a present phytoplankton abundance-based optical algorithm in the northern Bering and southern Chukchi Seas to characterize the spatial and seasonal variations of the different PSC and investigate the contributions of small phytoplankton to the total phytoplankton biomass. The comparison results showed that the phytoplankton abundance-based method approach could reasonably classify the three PSCs (pico-, nano-, and micro phytoplankton). The satellite maps of the dominant PSCs were derived using long-term satellite ocean color data. The general spatial distribution showed that the large (micro-) phytoplankton were dominant in the coastal waters and the west side of the Bering strait, while the small size (nano- or pico-) phytoplankton were dominant in the open ocean waters. Nano- and microphytoplankton were dominant in May and October in most of the study area, while pico-phytoplankton were dominant in the summer months in the open ocean waters. The annual variation in small phytoplankton dominance had a strong positive relationship with the annual mean sea surface temperature (SST), which is consistent with the increasing dominance of small phytoplankton biomass as water temperature increases. Microphytoplankton have an apparent increasing trend in the southeastern Chukchi Sea but slightly decreasing trends in Chirikov and St. Lawrence Island Polynya (SLIP). In contrast, there were increasing trends in picophytoplankton in Chirikov and SLIP, which seems to be related to increasing annual SST. It is crucial to monitor changes in dominant groups of phytoplankton community in the Bering and Chukchi Seas as important biological hotspots responding to the recent changes in environmental conditions.  相似文献

This study investigates a construction-induced sea level rise and tide characteristics change, using a regression analysis to separate the local construction effect such as sea-dike/seawalls and global warming from total sea level change. The study also makes it clear why and how the extreme high water level has risen just after constructions at Mokpo harbor in Korea. As a result of the regression analysis, it is found that the high water level rise for the period of 1960–2006 is ~60 cm, which is summation of four components: ~23 cm for Youngsan River sea-dike (1981), ~15 cm for Youngam seawall (1991), ~8 cm for Geumho seawall (1994), and ~14 cm for gradual rise (due mainly to global warming). Then, a numerical simulation at Mokpo coastal zone is performed to identify each component, and the results support the premise that the tidal amplification caused by constructions is due mainly to the extinguishment of the tidal choking effect at outer Mokpogu. The tidal flat effect makes the amplification greater at spring tide or extraordinary high tide, which would result in the increase of inundation risk at the Mokpo coastal zone. Frequency distribution of observed high water level data shows increasing trend for both maximum value of astronomical tide component (simulated high water level) and meteorological tide component (surge height) after the coastal constructions. A frequency analysis presents that the high water level for 50 year return period, which is often used for design in practice, is 474 cm before the construction, and while that is 553 cm after the construction. Furthermore, design height might steadily be elevated considering future global sea level rise.  相似文献

Localizing noise sources in cavitation experiments is an important research subject along with predicting noise levels. A cavitation tunnel propeller noise localization method is presented. Propeller noise measurement experiments were performed in the MOERI cavitation tunnel. To create cavitating conditions, a wake-generating dummy body was devised. In addition, 10 hydrophones were put inside a wing-shaped casing to minimize the unexpected flow inducing noise around the hydrophones. After measuring both of the noises of the rotating propeller behind the dummy body and acoustic signals transmitted by a virtual source, the data were processed via three objective functions based on the ideas of matched field processing and source strength estimation to localize noises on the propeller plane. In this paper, the measured noise analysis and the localization results are presented. Through the experiments and the analysis, it was found that the source localization methods that have been used in shallow water applications could be successfully adapted to the cavitation tunnel experiments.  相似文献

This paper introduces an underwater docking procedure for the test-bed autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) platform called ISiMI using one charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. The AUV is optically guided by lights mounted around the entrance of a docking station and a vision system consisting of a CCD camera and a frame grabber in the AUV. This paper presents an image processing procedure to identify the dock by discriminating between light images, and proposes a final approach algorithm based on the vision guidance. A signal processing technique to remove noise on the defused grabbed light images is introduced, and a two-stage final approach for stable docking at the terminal instant is suggested. A vision-guidance controller was designed with conventional PID controllers for the vertical plane and the horizontal plane. Experiments were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the vision-guided docking system of the AUV.  相似文献

Prorocentrum minimum is a common bloomforming photosynthetic dinoflagellate found along the southern coast of Korea. To investigate the adaptive responses of P. minimum to high light stress, we measured growth rate, and generation of reactive oxidative species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in cultures exposed to normal (NL) and high light levels (HL). The results showed that HL (800 μmol m?2 s?1) inhibited growth of P. minimum, with maximal inhibition after 7–9 days. HL also increased the amount of ROS and MDA, suggesting that HL stress leads to oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation in this species. Under HL, we first detected superoxide on day 4 and H2O2 on day 5. We also detected SOD activity on day 5 and CAT activity on day 6. The level of lipid peroxidation, an indicator of cell death, was high on day 8. Addition of diphenyleneiodonium (DPI), an NAD(P)H inhibitor, decreased the levels of superoxide generation and lipid peroxidation. Our results indicate that the production of ROS which results from HL stress in P. minimum also induces antioxidative enzymes that counteract oxidative damage and allow P. minimum to survive.  相似文献

This paper deals with the unloading problem of a spherical or circular opening excavated in elastic‐perfectly plastic media with a nonassociated Mohr–Coulomb yield criterion. A large strain similarity solution, using incremental velocity approach, is presented by replacing partial differential equations from stress equilibrium, constitutive law, consistency condition, and displacement equation with first‐order ordinary differential equations. The classical Runge–Kutta method is used to solve the first‐order ordinary differential equations. Comparisons among small and large strain solutions are made using some data sets of soil and rock. The results show that the displacements by large strain similarity solution are smaller than those by exact small strain solution and somewhat larger than those by large strain solution using total strain approach.
