The Jan Mayen microcontinent was as a result of two major North Atlantic evolutionary cornerstones—the separation of Greenland
from Norway (~54 Ma), accompanied by voluminous volcanic activity, and the jump of spreading from the Aegir to the Kolbeinsey
ridge (~33 Ma), which resulted in the separation of the microcontinent itself from Eastern Greenland (~24 Ma). The resulting
eastern and western sides of the Jan Mayen microcontinent are respectively volcanic and non-volcanic rifted margins. Until
now the northern boundary of the microcontinent was not precisely known. In order to locate this boundary, two combined refraction
and reflection seismic profiles were acquired in 2006: one trending S–N and consisting of two separate segments south and
north of the island of Jan Mayen respectively, and the second one trending SW–NE east of the island. Crustal P-wave velocity
models were derived and constrained using gravity data collected during the same expedition. North of the West Jan Mayen Fracture
Zone (WJMFZ) the models show oceanic crust that thickens from west to east. This thickening is explained by an increase in
volcanic activity expressed as a bathymetric high and most likely related to the proximity of the Mohn ridge. East of the
island and south of the WJMFZ, oceanic Layers 2 and 3 have normal seismic velocities but above normal average crustal thickness
(~11 km). The similarity of the crustal thickness and seismic velocities to those observed on the conjugate M?re margin confirm
the volcanic origin of the eastern side of the microcontinent. Thick continental crust is observed in the southern parts of
both profiles. The northern boundary of the microcontinent is a continuation of the northern lineament of the East Jan Mayen
Fracture Zone. It is thus located farther north than previously assumed. The crust in the middle parts of both models, around
Jan Mayen island, is more enigmatic as the data suggest two possible interpretations—Icelandic type of oceanic crust or thinned
and heavily intruded continental crust. We prefer the first interpretation but the latter cannot be completely ruled out.
We infer that the volcanism on Jan Mayen is related to the Icelandic plume. 相似文献

This paper describes results from a geophysical study in the Vestbakken Volcanic Province, located on the central parts of the western Barents Sea continental margin, and adjacent oceanic crust in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea. The results are derived mainly from interpretation and modeling of multichannel seismic, ocean bottom seismometer and land station data along a regional seismic profile. The resulting model shows oceanic crust in the western parts of the profile. This crust is buried by a thick Cenozoic sedimentary package. Low velocities in the bottom of this package indicate overpressure. The igneous oceanic crust shows an average thickness of 7.2 km with the thinnest crust (5–6 km) in the southwest and the thickest crust (8–9 km) close to the continent-ocean boundary (COB). The thick oceanic crust is probably related to high mantle temperatures formed by brittle weakening and shear heating along a shear system prior to continental breakup. The COB is interpreted in the central parts of the profile where the velocity structure and Bouguer anomalies change significantly. East of the COB Moho depths increase while the vertical velocity gradient decreases. Below the assumed center for Early Eocene volcanic activity the model shows increased velocities in the crust. These increased crustal velocities are interpreted to represent Early Eocene mafic feeder dykes. East of the zone of volcanoes velocities in the crust decrease and sedimentary velocities are observed at depths of more than 10 km. The amount of crustal intrusions is much lower in this area than farther west. East of the Kn?legga Fault crystalline basement velocities are brought close to the seabed. This fault marks the eastern limit of thick Cenozoic and Mesozoic packages on central parts of the western Barents Sea continental margin. 相似文献

This study interprets the recent history of Lake Kivu, a tropical lake in the East African Rift Valley. The current gross
sedimentation was characterized from a moored sediment trap array deployed over 2 years. The past net sedimentation was investigated
with three short cores from two different basins. Diatom assemblages from cores were interpreted as reflecting changes in
mixing depth, surface salinity and nutrient availability. The contemporary sediment trap data indicate seasonal variability,
governed by diatom blooms during the annual mixing in the dry season, similar to Lakes Malawi and Tanganyika. The ratio of
settling fluxes to net sediment accumulation rates implies mineralization rates of 80–90% at the sediment-water interface.
The sediment cores revealed an abrupt change ~40 years ago, when carbonate precipitation started. Since the 1960s, deep-water
methane concentrations, nutrient fluxes and soil mineral inputs have increased considerably and diatom assemblages have altered.
These modifications probably resulted from a combination of three factors, commonly altering lake systems: the introduction
of a non-native fish species, eutrophication, and hydrological changes inducing greater upwelling. Both the fish introduction
and increased rainfall occurred at the time when the onset of carbonate precipitation was observed, whereas catchment population
growth accompanied by intensified land use increased the flux of soil minerals already since the early twentieth century due

ABSTRACTThere is a lack of suitable methods for creating precipitation scenarios that can be used to realistically estimate peak discharges with very low probabilities. On the one hand, existing methods are methodically questionable when it comes to physical system boundaries. On the other hand, the spatio-temporal representativeness of precipitation patterns as system input is limited. In response, this paper proposes a method of deriving spatio-temporal precipitation patterns and presents a step towards making methodically correct estimations of infrequent floods by using a worst-case approach. A Monte Carlo approach allows for the generation of a wide range of different spatio-temporal distributions of an extreme precipitation event that can be tested with a rainfall–runoff model that generates a hydrograph for each of these distributions. Out of these numerous hydrographs and their corresponding peak discharges, the physically plausible spatio-temporal distributions that lead to the highest peak discharges are identified and can eventually be used for further investigations.

Displacements of the Earth’s surface caused by tidal and non-tidal loading forces are relevant in high-precision space geodesy. Some of the corrections are recommended by the international scientific community to be applied at the observation level, e.g., ocean tidal loading (OTL) and atmospheric tidal loading (ATL). Non-tidal displacement corrections are in general recommended not to be applied in the products of the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service, in particular atmospheric non-tidal loading (ANTL), oceanic and hydrological non-tidal corrections. We assess and compare the impact of OTL, ATL and ANTL on SLR-derived parameters by reprocessing 12 years of SLR data considering and ignoring individual corrections. We show that loading displacements have an influence not only on station long-term stability, but also on geocenter coordinates, Earth Rotation Parameters, and satellite orbits. Applying the loading corrections reduces the amplitudes of annual signals in the time series of geocenter and station coordinates. The general improvement of the SLR station 3D coordinate repeatability when applying OTL, ATL and ANTL corrections are 19.5 %, 0.2 % and 3.3 % respectively, w.r.t. the solutions without loading corrections. ANTL corrections play a crucial role in the combination of optical (SLR) and microwave (GNSS, VLBI, DORIS) space geodetic observation techniques, because of the so-called Blue-Sky effect: SLR measurements can be carried out only under cloudless sky conditions—typically during high air pressure conditions, when the Earth’s crust is deformed, whereas microwave observations are weather-independent. Thus, applying the loading corrections at the observation level improves SLR-derived products as well as the consistency with microwave-based results. We assess the Blue-Sky effect on SLR stations and the consistency improvement between GNSS and SLR solutions when ANTL corrections are included. The omission of ANTL corrections may lead to inconsistencies between SLR and GNSS solutions of up to 2.5 mm for inland stations. As a result, the estimated GNSS–SLR coordinate differences correspond better to the local ties at the co-located stations when applying ANTL corrections. 相似文献

In information systems, ontologies promise advantages such as enhanced interoperability, knowledge sharing, and integration of data sources. In this article, we show that the upper ontology Basic Formal Ontology can facilitate the modeling of an evolution of administrative units. This is demonstrated by creating a spatiotemporal ontology for the administrative units of Switzerland. The ontology tackles the problem that the geometric data is typically captured by taking snapshots at regular intervals while the thematic data is continually updated. The ontology presented merges time‐stamped geometries with a formally described history of administrative units, allowing for complex spatiotemporal queries neither standard approach would support. The resulting populated knowledge base was evaluated against a set of spatiotemporal test queries. The evaluation showed that this knowledge base supports a wide range of queries on the evolution of the administrative units of Switzerland between 1960 and 2010. 相似文献

Our ability to adapt to changes in groundwater quality, arising from a changing climate and/or local pressures, is dependent on comprehension of the governing controls of spatial variation in groundwater chemistry. This paper presents results of an assessment of dominant hydro-geochemical processes controlling groundwater chemical composition, using an integrated application of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) of a major ion dataset of groundwater from lower Shire River valley, Malawi. The area is in the southernmost part of the western section of the East African Rift System (EARS) and has localised occurrence of saline groundwater. HCA classified samples into three main clusters (C1-C3) according to their dominant chemical composition: C1 (dominant composition: Na-Cl; median TDS: 3436 mg L−1), C2 (dominant composition: Na-HCO3; median TDS: 966 mg L−1) and C3 (dominant composition: alkali earths-HCO3; median TDS: 528 mg L−1). These clusters were in turn described by the principal components PC1, PC3 and PC2, respectively, resulting from the PCA. The results of the PCA and geochemical interpretation suggest that the spatial variation of groundwater quality in the area is influenced by the following processes: C3 samples result mainly from H2CO3 weathering of aluminosilicate minerals by percolating water supersaturated with CO2. In addition to aluminosilicate weathering, C2 samples are influenced by the processes of cation exchange of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the water for Na+ on clay minerals, and carbonate precipitation. The increase in ionic strength of C2 samples is attributed to mixing with high TDS groundwater in proximity with C2 samples. The saline/brackish C1 groundwater results from the processes of evaporation (for samples with high water table close to the Shire marshes) and dissolution of Cl− and SO4-evaporative salts followed by mineralised seep from sedimentary Karoo and Cretaceous Lupata sandstones. 相似文献

Iron oxide–apatite (IOA) deposits, often referred to as Kiruna-type iron ore deposits, are known to have formed from the Proterozoic
to the Tertiary. They are commonly associated with calc–alkaline volcanic rocks and regional- to deposit-scale metasomatic
alteration. In the Bafq District in east Central Iran, economic iron oxide–apatite deposits occur within felsic volcanic tuffs
and volcanosedimentary sequences of Early Cambrian age. In order to constrain the age of formation of these ores and their
relationship with the Early Cambrian magmatic event, we have determined the U–Pb apatite age for five occurrences in the Bafq
District. In a 206Pb/238U vs. 207Pb/235U diagram, apatite free of or poor in inclusions of other minerals plots along the Concordia between 539 and 527 Ma with four
out of five samples from one deposit clustering at the upper end of this range. For this deposit, we interpret this cluster
to represent the age of apatite formation, whereas the spread towards younger ages may reflect either minor Pb loss or several
events of IOA formation. Apatite with inclusions of monazite (±xenotime) yields disturbed systems with inclusions having developed
after formation of the iron ore–apatite deposits, possibly as late as 130–140 Ma ago. Obtained apatite ages confirms that
(IOA) and the apatite-rich rocks (apatites) of the Bafq district formed coevally with the Early Cambrian magmatic (-metasomatic)

The characteristic biology and wide distribution of hagfish species makes them relevant for use in pollution biomonitoring at great water depths, particularly in regions where deep-water oil production may take place. The exposure of fish to petrogenic contaminants can normally be detected from the level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) metabolites in bile fluid. Some of these metabolites are strong fluorophores, allowing analytical detection by means of simple fluorometric techniques such as fixed wavelength fluorescence (FF) and synchronous fluorescence scanning (SFS). In the present study bile from Atlantic hagfish (Myxine glutinosa) collected in pristine areas (Barents Sea and southwestern Norway) displayed strong bile fluorescence levels, suggesting the presence of PAH contaminants. However, gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses ruled out PAHs as the origin for this fluorescence signal. Rather, the bile of Myxine contains components resulting in unusually strong background fluorescence interfering at the wavelength pairs used for detection of PAH metabolites. Possible background for the observed matrix interference and implications for detection of PAH metabolites in hagfish is discussed. 相似文献

This study monitors regional changes in the crystallinity of carbonaceous matter (CM) by applying Micro-Raman spectroscopy
to a total of 214 metasediment samples (largely so-called Bündnerschiefer) dominantly metamorphosed under blueschist- to amphibolite-facies
conditions. They were collected within the northeastern margin of the Lepontine dome and easterly adjacent areas of the Swiss
Central Alps. Three-dimensional mapping of isotemperature contours in map and profile views shows that the isotemperature
contours associated with the Miocene Barrow-type Lepontine metamorphic event cut across refolded nappe contacts, both along
and across strike within the northeastern margin of the Lepontine dome and adjacent areas. Further to the northeast, the isotemperature
contours reflect temperatures reached during the Late Eocene subduction-related blueschist-facies event and/or during subsequent
near-isothermal decompression; these contours appear folded by younger, large-scale post-nappe-stacking folds. A substantial
jump in the recorded maximum temperatures across the tectonic contact between the frontal Adula nappe complex and surrounding
metasediments indicates that this contact accommodated differential tectonic movement of the Adula nappe with respect to the
enveloping Bündnerschiefer after maximum temperatures were reached within the northern Adula nappe, i.e. after Late Eocene
