Mechanical properties of the biomineralised cement from tube-building marine worms are poorly known. Secreted from an organ connected to the polychaetes specialised glands, the cement glues sand grains and calcareous shell fragments of a given size and, on a larger scale, ensures the resistance of the reef to waves. In this study, three kinds of mechanical tests were performed with worm tubes to establish the nature of the cement behaviour. Results obtained show that cement behaves like a visco-elastic material. This property allows the tubes to dissipate the mechanical energy from the waves to which they are subject and to reduce the mechanical stress transmitted inside the tubes to the polychaetes. Comparison of “fresh” and “dry” cements highlights that the visco-elastic behaviour of the cement is maintained after five years. The viscosity of the cement is therefore not related to moisture but to its chemical composition. More generally, these results offer a better understanding of the role of cement on worm reefs strength and their persistence in the geological record.  相似文献

The mode of formation of gullies on Mars, very young erosional–depositional landforms consisting of an alcove, channel, and fan, is one of the most enigmatic problems in martian geomorphology. Major questions center on their ages, geographic and stratigraphic associations, relation to recent ice ages, and, if formed by flowing water, the sources of the water to cause the observed erosion/deposition. Gasa (35.72°S, 129.45°E), a very fresh 7-km diameter impact crater and its environment, offer a unique opportunity to explore these questions. We show that Gasa crater formed during the most recent glacial epoch (2.1–0.4 Ma), producing secondary crater clusters on top of the latitude-dependent mantle (LDM), interpreted to be a layered ice-dust-rich deposit emplaced during this glacial epoch. High-resolution images of a pre-Gasa impact crater ~100 km northeast of Gasa reveal that portions of the secondary-crater-covered LDM have been removed from pole-facing slopes in crater interiors near Gasa; gullies are preferentially located in these areas and channels feeding alcoves and fans can be seen to emerge from the eroding LDM layers to produce multiple generations of channel incision and fan lobes. We interpret these data to mean that these gullies formed extremely recently in the post-Gasa-impact time-period by melting of the ice-rich LDM. Stratigraphic and topographic relationships are interpreted to mean that under favorable illumination geometry (steep pole-facing slopes) and insolation conditions, melting of the debris-covered ice-rich mantle took place in multiple stages, most likely related to variations in spin-axis/orbital conditions. Closer to Gasa, in the interior of the ~18 km diameter LDM-covered host crater in which Gasa formed, the pole-facing slopes display two generations of gullies. Early, somewhat degraded gullies, have been modified by proximity to Gasa ejecta emplacement, and later, fresh appearing gullies are clearly superposed, cross-cut the earlier phase, and show multiple channels and fans, interpreted to be derived from continued melting of the LDM on steep pole-facing slopes. Thus, we conclude that melting of the ice-rich LDM is a major source of gully activity both pre-Gasa crater and post-Gasa crater formation. The lack of obscuration of Gasa secondary clusters formed on top of the LDM is interpreted to mean that the Gasa impact occurred following emplacement of the last significant LDM layers at these low latitudes, and thus near the end of the ice ages. This interpretation is corroborated by the lack of LDM within Gasa. However, Gasa crater contains a robustly developed set of gullies on its steep, pole-facing slopes, unlike other very young post-LDM craters in the region. How can the gullies inside Gasa form in the absence of an ice-rich LDM that is interpreted to be the source of water for the other adjacent and partly contemporaneous gullies? Analysis of the interior (floor and walls) of the host crater suggest that prior to the Gasa impact, the pole-facing walls and floor were occupied by remnant debris-covered glaciers formed earlier in the Amazonian, which are relatively common in crater interiors in this latitude band. We suggest that the Gasa impact cratering event penetrated into the southern portion of this debris-covered glacier, emplaced ejecta on top of the debris layer covering the ice, and caused extensive melting of the buried ice and flow of water and debris slurries on the host crater floor. Inside Gasa, the impact crater rim crest and wall intersected the debris-covered glacier deposits around the northern, pole-facing part of the Gasa interior. We interpret this exposure of ice-rich debris-covered glacial material in the crater wall to be the source of meltwater that formed the very well-developed gullies along the northern, pole-facing slopes of Gasa crater.  相似文献

Impact melt flows exterior to Copernican-age craters are observed in high spatial resolution (0.5 m/pixel) images acquired by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Narrow Angle Camera (NAC). Impact melt is mapped in detail around 15 craters ranging in diameter from 2.4 to 32.5 km. This survey supports previous observations suggesting melt flows often occur at craters whose shape is influenced by topographic variation at the pre-impact site. Impact melt flows are observed around craters as small as 2.4 km in diameter, and preliminary estimates of melt volume suggest melt production at small craters can significantly exceed model predictions. Digital terrain models produced from targeted NAC stereo images are used to examine the three-dimensional properties of flow features and emplacement setting, enabling physical modeling of flow parameters. Qualitative and quantitative observations are consistent with low-viscosity melts heated above their liquidii (superheated) with limited amounts of entrained solids.  相似文献

Although some scholars describe migrant farmers as ‘exceptional resource degraders’ others do not. This paper uses evidence from the transitional agro-ecological zone of Ghana, to examine whether there are substantial differences between households of migrants and the host population regarding agricultural land use. The aim is to determine whether migrants are more destructive of the land (and hence the environment) than the host population. This will be examined using a standard model of the determinants of agricultural land use, to which we add variables representing demographic impacts, including in-migration. The data used are from a household survey undertaken in 2002 among 110 migrant and 142 host population farming households in central Ghana. Results are mixed. We find no support for the hypothesis that households with migrants are less likely to consider the long-term effects of land use by increasing the land area in cultivation, but at the same time there is evidence of use of more land-intensive agricultural practices which tend to degrade farm land over time.  相似文献

Soil temperature records obtained from the active layer above permafrost at a site in northern Alaska during autumn and winter have variance spectra inconsistent with a purely conductive heat-transfer system. Although conductive heat-transfer theory predicts that temperature fluctuations are attenuated with depth, sub-diurnal thermal variance at the 50-cm level, near the base of the active layer, exceeded that at the 10-cm level. Short segments of the temperature record were drawn from three distinct periods of soil-frost conditions: (1) at the maximum vertical development of the active layer in early autumn; (2) during frost penetration and the formation of a zero curtain in early winter; and (3) after freezeback of the active layer. The variance spectra of these time series show systematic seasonal transitions that reflect changing mechanisms of heat transfer. During the first and second periods, heat transfer by internal evaporation and condensation dominates at wavelengths in the diurnal range. The spectral traces are not strongly self-similar and the fractal dimensions indicate extreme space-filling, especially at deeper levels. Once the active layer is frozen, conductive heat transfer dominates, producing a trend toward self-similarity. Both the thermal variance and the fractal dimension decrease with depth in the frozen regime. Geophysical data and sampling of the Golo Basin (East Corsica margin) provide the opportunity to study mass balance in a single drainage system over the last 130 kyr, by comparing deposited sediments in the sink and the maximum eroded volume in the source using total denudation proxies. Evaluation of the solid sediments deposited offshore and careful integration of uncertainties from the age model and physical properties allow us to constrain three periods of sedimentation during the last climatic cycle. The peak of sedimentation initiated during Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 3 (ca. 45 ka) and lasted until late in MIS 2 (ca. 18 ka). This correlates with Mediterranean Sea palaeoclimatic records and the glaciation in high altitude Corsica. The yield of solid sediment into the Golo Basin drops in the observed present day Mediterranean basins (gauging stations), whereas the palaeo‐denudation estimate derived from the sediments over the last glacial period is one to ten times higher than that predicted using cosmogenic or thermochronometer estimates of exhumation. The catchment‐wide denudation rate calculated from deposited solid sediment ranges from 47 to 219 mm kyr?1, which is higher than the estimate from palaeosurface ablation in the proximal part of the source (9–140 mm kyr?1) and lower than the distal, narrow, incised channel of the Golo River (160–475 mm kyr?1). This mismatch raises questions about the investigation of denudation at millennial‐time scale (kyr) and at higher integrating times (Myr) as a reliable tool for determining the effect of climate change on mountain building and on sedimentary basin models.  相似文献

Pattern analysis techniques currently common within geography tend to focus either on characterizing patterns of spatial and/or temporal recurrence of a single event type (e.g., incidence of flu cases) or on comparing sequences of a limited number of event types where relationships between events are already represented in the data (e.g., movement patterns). The availability of large amounts of multivariate spatiotemporal data, however, requires new methods for pattern analysis. Here, we present a technique for finding associations among many different event types where the associations among these varying event types are not explicitly represented in the data or known in advance. This pattern discovery method, known as T-pattern analysis, was first developed within the field of psychology for the purpose of finding patterns in personal interactions. We have adapted and extended the T-pattern method to take the unique characteristics of geographic data into account and implemented it within a geovisualization toolkit for an integrated computational-geovisual environment we call STempo. To demonstrate how T-pattern analysis can be employed in geographic research for discovering patterns in complex spatiotemporal data, we describe a case study featuring events from news reports about Yemen during the Arab Spring of 2011–2012. Using supplementary data from the Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone, we briefly summarize and reference a separate validation study, then evaluate the scalability of the T-pattern approach. We conclude with ideas for further extensions of the T-pattern technique to increase its utility for spatiotemporal analysis.  相似文献
