Although photometry of Mars is not listed as a major mission objective, the Viking Project has provided the Orbiter Imaging Team with cameras exhibiting significant improvement in photometric measurement as compared with past Mariners. Multiple discriminant analysis is used to identify systematic variations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, and Au grade values in the Canadian massive sulfide deposits with the three geological parameters of age, environment, and composition of volcanic lithology. The deposits have been separated into three groups on each of the three parameter scales and discriminant functions that separated the three groups on the basis of metal grades were then obtained. The results of the analysis indicated that Pb and Cu are the most significant in indicating specific trends along the three geological parameter scales. Pb grade increases in younger deposits with an increase in the sedimentary character of their environments, or with a more felsic nature to their volcanic rocks. On the other hand, Cu grade increases in deposits that occur in volcanic environments and with a more mafic nature to the volcanic host rocks. The results could have useful applications in mineral exploration. 相似文献
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the results of a survey of the availability and uptake of port reception facilities within the North Sea area. The evaluation is based primarily on original survey data from the autumn of 2002 which followed on from a similar survey conducted in the summer of 2000. The EU Directive on port reception facilities for ship-generated waste etc. (Directive 2000/59/EC) was due to enter into force in December 2002, and required all EU ports to provide reception facilities to meet the needs of the vessels normally calling in at them. This paper examines the readiness of North Sea ports to meet that requirement and also considers the actual uptake levels of facilities, where ports were able to provide such information. 相似文献
FAMOUS is an unfluxadjusted coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model (AOGCM) based on the Met Office Hadley Centre
AOGCM HadCM3. Its parametrisations of physical and dynamical processes are almost identical to those of HadCM3, but by virtue
of reduced horizontal and vertical resolution and increased timestep it runs about ten times faster. The speed of FAMOUS means
that parameter sensitivities can be investigated more thoroughly than in slower higher-resolution models, with the result
that it can be tuned closer to its target climatology. We demonstrate a simple method for systematic tuning of parameters,
resulting in a configuration of FAMOUS whose climatology is significantly more realistic than would be expected for a model
of its resolution and speed. FAMOUS has been tuned to reproduce the behaviour of HadCM3 as nearly as possible, in order that
experiments with each model are of maximum relevance to the physical interpretation of the other. Analysis of the control
climate and climate change simulation of FAMOUS show that it possesses sufficient skill for its intended purposes in Earth
system science as a tool for long-timescale integrations and for large ensembles of integrations, when HadCM3 cannot be afforded.
Thus, it can help to bridge the gap between models of intermediate complexity and the higher-resolution AOGCMs used for policy-relevant

We have undertaken a comparative study of the mechanisms which drive the response of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation (THC) to a fourfold increase in CO2 over 70 years with stabilisation thereafter in HadCM2 and HadCM3. In both models, the THC changes are driven by surface flux forcing, with advection (and diffusion in HadCM2) acting in the opposite sense to limit the circulation change. In both cases, heat fluxes are more important than those of freshwater. We find that different patterns of heat flux forcing in HadCM2 and HadCM3 are the prime determinants of the differing response in the two models. The increased northerly component to the near surface winds (associated with an increase in reflective low level cloud), leads to enhanced heat loss in the west-central North Atlantic, which in turn tends to steepen the steric gradient and strengthen the THC. By contrast, in HadCM3 the winds become more westerly rather than northerly, there is no dynamically-forced enhancement of surface heat loss, and the heat flux in the North Atlantic continues to be strongly positive, relative to the control, leading to a reduction in the meridional steric gradient, and a weaker overturning circulation. Differences in atmospheric response patterns appear to be caused by improvements to atmospheric and land surface physics, and suggest that the THC response in HadCM2 is less credible than in HadCM3. 相似文献
Volcanic ‘super-eruptions’ have been suggested to have significantly influenced the Earth’s climate, perhaps causing glaciations
and impacting on the human population. Climatic changes following a hypothetical ‘super-eruption’ are simulated using a coupled
atmosphere ocean general circulation model, incorporating scaled volcanic stratospheric aerosols. Assumptions are made about
the stratospheric sulphate aerosol loading, size distribution, lifetime, chemical make up and spatial distribution. As this
study is concentrating on the physical climatological impacts over long timescales, microphysics and chemical interactive
processes are not simulated. Near-surface temperatures fall by as much as 10 K globally for a few months and a considerable
deviation from normal temperatures continues for several decades. A warming pattern is evident over northern land masses during
the winter due to increased longwave forcing and a positive AO mode. The overturning rate of the North Atlantic thermohaline
circulation doubles in intensity. Snow and ice increases in extent to a maximum coverage of 35% of the Earth. Despite these
and other impacts longer term climatic changes that could lead to a transition to a glaciation do not occur, for present day
boundary conditions and one possible plausible aerosol loading. 相似文献
The elastic moduli of ScAlO3 perovskite, a very close structural analogue for MgSiO3 perovskite, have been measured between 300 and 600 K using high precision ultrasonic interferometry in an internally heated gas-charged pressure vessel. This new capability for high temperature measurement of elastic wave speeds has been demonstrated on polycrystalline alumina. The temperature derivatives of elastic moduli of Al2O3 measured in this study agree within 15% with expectations based on published single-crystal data. For ScAlO3 perovskite, the value of (∂KS/∂T)P is −0.033 GPa K−1 and (∂G/∂T)P is −0.015 GPa K−1. The relative magnitudes of these derivatives agree with the observation in Duffy and Anderson [Duffy, T.S., Anderson, D.L., 1989. Seismic velocities in mantle minerals and the mineralogy of the upper mantle. J. Geophys. Res. 94, 1895–1912.] that |(∂KS/∂T)P| is typically about twice |(∂G/∂T)P|. The value of (∂KS/∂T)P for ScAlO3 is intermediate between those inferred less directly from V(P,T) studies of Fe-free and Fe- and Al-bearing MgSiO3 perovskites [Wang, Y., Weidner, D.J., Liebermann, R.C., Zhao, Y., 1994. P–V–T equation of state of (Mg,Fe)SiO3 perovskite: constraints on composition of the lower mantle. Phys. Earth Planet. The value of |(∂G/∂T)|P for ScAlO3 is similar to those of most other mantle silicate phases but lower than the recent determination for MgSiO3 perovskite [Sinelnikov, Y., Chen, G., Neuville, D.R., Vaughan, M.T., Liebermann, R.C., 1998. Ultrasonic shear wave velocities of MgSiO3 perovskite at 8 GPa and 800K and lower mantle composition. Science 281, 677–679].
Combining the results from the previous studies and current measurements on ScAlO3 perovskite, we extracted the parameters (q and γ0) needed to fully specify its Mie–Grüneisen–Debye equation-of-state. In this study, we have demonstrated that acoustic measurements of KS(T), unlike V(P,T) data, tightly constrain the value of q. It is concluded that ScAlO3 has ‘normal’ γ0 (1.3) and high q (3.6). The high value of q indicates that ScAlO3 has very strong intrinsic temperature dependence of the bulk modulus; similar behaviour has been observed in measurements on Fe- and Al-bearing silicate perovskites (Mao et al., 1991; Zhang and Weidner, 1999). 相似文献
The effect of parental growth form on ramets introduced to new sites has broad implications for ecological restoration. We asked whether transplants ofSpartina foliosa need to come from tall parents in order to produce tall stands for nesting by the light-footed clapper rail, one of southern California’s many endangered, salt-marsh-dependent species. Tall and shortS. foliosa transplants, collected from local salt marshes, were grown in a common garden and in microcosms, with different results. In the common garden, which had hypersaline soil, offspring of tall versus short clones did not differ, but they did respond to soil variations among blocks. In blocks with less sandy soil, stems were taller and up to 5 times more numerous, and patch sizes were up to 3 times larger. After two years in low-salinity microcosms, transplants receiving nitrogen additions produced more stems and over twice the total stem length of controls, regardless of parental height form. A slight parental effect was seen in this benign environment; the maximum height of tall-form transplants was 15 cm taller than that of short-form transplants, but the effect did not persist through year 2. Results indicate that both height forms ofS. foliosa grew better (taller and more dense) with less environmental stress (lower salinity, more nutrients). We conclude that environmental differences are more important than parental height form in determiningS. foliosa growth. This means that, for restoration purposes,S. foliosa ramets can and should be collected from short clones, rather than from existing, prime nesting habitat. 相似文献
