Collisions are a fundamental process in the creation of asteroid families and in satellite formation. For this reason, understanding the outcome of impacts is fundamental to the accurate modeling of the formation and evolution of such systems. Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics/N-body codes have become the techniques of choice to study large-scale impact outcomes, including both the fragmentation of the parent body and the gravitational interactions between fragments. It is now possible to apply this technique to targets with either monolithic or rubble-pile internal structures. In this paper we apply these numerical techniques to rubble-pile targets, extending previous investigations by Durda et al. (Durda, D.D., Bottke, W.F., Enke, B.L., Merline, W.J., Asphaug, E., Richardson, D.C., Leinhardt, Z.M. [2004]. Icarus 170, 243–257; Durda, D.D., Bottke, W.F., Nesvorný, D., Enke, B.L., Merline, W.J., Asphaug, E., Richardson, D.C. [2007]. Icarus 186, 498–516). The goals are to study asteroid–satellite formation and the morphology of the size–frequency distributions (SFDs) from 175 impact simulations covering a range of collision speeds, impact angles, and impactor sizes. Our results show that low-energy impacts into rubble-pile and monolithic targets produce different features in the resulting SFDs and that these are potentially diagnostic of the initial conditions for the impact and the internal structure of the parent bodies of asteroid families. In contrast, super-catastrophic events (i.e., high-energy impacts with large specific impact energy) result in SFDs that are similar to each other. We also find that rubble-pile targets are less efficient in producing satellites than their monolithic counterparts. However, some features, such as the secondary-to-primary diameter ratio and the relative separation of components in binary systems, are similar for these two different internal structures of parent bodies.  相似文献

Stream chemistry is often used to infer catchment‐scale biogeochemical processes. However, biogeochemical cycling in the near‐stream zone or hydrologically connected areas may exert a stronger influence on stream chemistry compared with cycling processes occurring in more distal parts of the catchment, particularly in dry seasons and in dry years. In this study, we tested the hypotheses that near‐stream wetland proportion is a better predictor of seasonal (winter, spring, summer, and fall) stream chemistry compared with whole‐catchment averages and that these relationships are stronger in dryer periods with lower hydrologic connectivity. We evaluated relationships between catchment wetland proportion and 16‐year average seasonal flow‐weighted concentrations of both biogeochemically active nutrients, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrate (NO3‐N), total phosphorus (TP), as well as weathering products, calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), at ten headwater (<200 ha) forested catchments in south‐central Ontario, Canada. Wetland proportion across the entire catchment was the best predictor of DOC and TP in all seasons and years, whereas predictions of NO3‐N concentrations improved when only the proportion of wetland within the near‐stream zone was considered. This was particularly the case during dry years and dry seasons such as summer. In contrast, Ca and Mg showed no relationship with catchment wetland proportion at any scale or in any season. In forested headwater catchments, variable hydrologic connectivity of source areas to streams alters the role of the near‐stream zone environment, particularly during dry periods. The results also suggest that extent of riparian zone control may vary under changing patterns of hydrological connectivity. Predictions of biogeochemically active nutrients, particularly NO3‐N, can be improved by including near‐stream zone catchment morphology in landscape models.  相似文献

Didymosphenia geminata has recently and rapidly greatly expanded its range and abundance, sometimes as an exotic invasive and other times as a nuisance (‘native invader’) within its hypothesized native range, including the northeastern United States. D. geminata mats are visually conspicuous and can grow >10 cm thick. Mats first appeared in the eastern Catskill mountains (New York) in 2009. Our objectives were to (1) document D. geminata growth in three impounded or regulated rivers in the eastern Catskill mountains from 2010 to 2012 and (2) measure the effects of D. geminata mats on macroinvertebrates. The highest D. geminata cell densities were downstream of reservoir outflows in two of three streams. D. geminata mat development peaked in the summer each year, but maximum coverage and cell density was variable among years. D. geminata cover was negatively correlated with 10 days maximum antecedent shear stress, and the year with lowest mean D. geminata cover had multiple tropical storms and floods, suggesting that low variation in flow allows for D. geminata mat proliferation. Across sites, D. geminata density was negatively correlated with nitrate concentrations. D. geminata density was negatively related to macroinvertebrate richness suggesting that D. geminata mats may negatively affect aquatic food webs. D. geminata appears to be a nuisance species with similar habitat characteristics and growth where it is both a native invader and an invasive species.  相似文献

Bivalve molluscs are newly discovered models of successful ageing. Here, we test the hypothesis that extreme longevity of freshwater mussels is associated with an enhanced resistance to oxidative stress. We assess whether resistance to oxidative stress might be causally involved in the exceptional longevity exhibited by the freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera. We compared resistance to oxidative stress and total haemocyte counts, a health status biomarker in M. margaritifera (maximum lifespan potential 190 years) with three other freshwater bivalve species spanning a range of longevities. Previous studies of the comparative stress resistance and longevity of marine bivalves provide evidence for the hypothesis that an association exists between longevity and not only an enhanced resistance to oxidative stress but also a general resistance to multiplex stressors. We compared baseline total haemocyte counts, age-related changes, and responses to exposure to the oxidative stressor tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP). Surprisingly our data does not support the premise that extreme longevity in M. margaritifera is associated with enhanced resistance to oxidative stress. In comparison with its shorter-lived counter parts M. margaritifera was the least resistance to oxidative stress. Following TBHP exposure, no association between longevity and resistance to oxidative stress-induced mortality nor a marked resistance to oxidative stress-induced declines in total haemocyte counts were observed. The results suggest longevity evolved separately in freshwater mussels and this group warrants further attention from biogerontologists because such study may provide novel insights not detected through the study of the marine members of the class, where most attention is currently focused.  相似文献

Snow provides large seasonal storage of freshwater, and information about the distribution of snow mass as snow water equivalent (SWE) is important for hydrological planning and detecting climate change impacts. Large regional disagreements remain between estimates from reanalyses, remote sensing and modelling. Assimilating passive microwave information improves SWE estimates in many regions, but the assimilation must account for how microwave scattering depends on snow stratigraphy. Physical snow models can estimate snow stratigraphy, but users must consider the computational expense of model complexity versus acceptable errors. Using data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Cold Land Processes Experiment and the Helsinki University of Technology microwave emission model of layered snowpacks, it is shown that simulations of the brightness temperature difference between 19 and 37 GHz vertically polarised microwaves are consistent with advanced microwave scanning radiometer-earth observing system and special sensor microwave imager retrievals once known stratigraphic information is used. Simulated brightness temperature differences for an individual snow profile depend on the provided stratigraphic detail. Relative to a profile defined at the 10-cm resolution of density and temperature measurements, the error introduced by simplification to a single layer of average properties increases approximately linearly with snow mass. If this brightness temperature error is converted into SWE using a traditional retrieval method, then it is equivalent to ±13 mm SWE (7 % of total) at a depth of 100 cm. This error is reduced to ±5.6 mm SWE (3 % of total) for a two-layer model.  相似文献

Abstract

The responses of common smelt (Retropinna retropinna Richardson), inanga (Galaxias maculatus Jenyns), common bully (Gobiomorphus cotidianus McDowall), and shrimp (Paratya curvirostris Heller) to ammonia and low dissolved oxygen (DO), separately and in combination, were measured in a fluvarium. Only common smelt avoided high or low ammonia (c. 8.5 and 2.0 g m?3 NH3, respectively) and low DO (c. 2 g m?3) alone and in combination. Shrimp avoided high ammonia and low DO+ammonia but not low DO on its own. Inanga and bullies showed no significant negative response to either contaminant; rather, inanga were strongly attracted to low ammonia and bullies to low DO. These results parallel those from toxicity experiments that show common smelt and shrimp are usually among the most sensitive native species to various contaminants. The consistent and appropriate avoidance behaviour shown by common smelt, in particular, suggests this species would be a good indicator organism for assessing the health of lowland waterways.  相似文献
