Resource Struggles and the Politics of Place in North Lampung, Indonesia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper considers the difficulties inherent in countering the negative effects of globalisation in Indonesia through an enhanced recognition of place-based cultural communities, which are seen to offer an alternative and more progressive path towards development. Focusing on the local history of resource struggles involving Javanese migrants and local people in North Lampung, the paper examines the ways that different groups of migrants and local Lampung people have dealt with changing resource control mechanisms in the context of the local transmigration ( Translok ) programme and large-scale agro-industrial development in the region. Whilst elites have been able to develop their personal wealth by capitalising on political and economic uncertainty, poor people from both groups have had to contend with conflict and increasing livelihood vulnerability that, if anything, has been intensified through the reassertion of place-based cultures of resource control. In challenging populist narratives of resistance to transmigration that pit migrants against "indigenous" local people, the paper identifies the class-related ambivalences towards development and structures of authority that cut across community and locality in the Translok zone  相似文献

We present U, Th, and Pa isotope data for young lavas from Costa Rica and Nicaragua in the Central American arc. Thorium isotopic ratios for Costa Rica and Nicaragua differ dramatically: Costa Rican lavas are characterized by low (230Th/232Th) (1 to 1.2) and, for four out of five lavas, (230Th/238U) greater than unity. Nicaraguan lavas have high (230Th/232Th) (2.2 to 2.7) and, for five of six samples, (230Th/238U) less than unity. All lavas have (231Pa/235U) greater than unity, with initial values ranging from 1.27 to 1.77, but those from Costa Rica have larger 231Pa excesses. There is a broad positive correlation between (231Pa/235U) and (230Th/238U) similar to the worldwide trend for arcs outlined by Pickett and Murrell (1997), although many of the Nicaraguan lavas skirt the high end of that trend. In greater detail, the Central American data appear to divide into separate high-(231Pa/235U) and low-(231Pa/235U) tiers. These tiers may be different because of either different residence times in the crust or different proportions of sedimentary components from the slab.Substantial (231Pa/235U) excesses (>1.5) in both Costa Rica and Nicaragua require a melting process that allows for enhanced daughter (231Pa) ingrowth. With increasing U addition, (231Pa/230Th) increases in a manner that cannot be explained adequately by aging of fluid components before partial melting and eruption. Thus, either some 231Pa is added from the slab, or melting-enhanced 231Pa ingrowth is greater in sources that have experienced a larger amount of slab-derived flux and a higher extent of melting. These observations can be explained if regions that have undergone greater extents of fluxing and melting have experienced these processes over a longer time interval than those that have had little flux added and little melt extracted. We propose a flux-ingrowth melting model in which corner flow in the mantle wedge supplies fresh hot mantle into a zone of slab fluid addition. Partial melting occurs in response to this fluxing. We assume critical melting at low porosity (∼10−3), rapid fluid flux to the melting region, and rapid melt transport. Solid mantle traverses the melting region over 105 to 106 yr, thereby allowing 231Pa and 230Th ingrowth from U retained in the residues of melt extraction. Magmas are aggregated from all parts of the melting regime, mixing melts from incipiently fluxed regions with those from sources that have experienced more extensive fluid addition, partial melting, and daughter nuclide ingrowth. With suitable assumptions about component addition from the slab, this flux-ingrowth model matches a wide range of U-series and trace element data from Costa Rican and Nicaraguan lavas, with required average extents of melting of ∼1 to 3% and 7 to 15%, respectively. Upwelling and/or extensive melt-rock reaction are not required to explain large (231Pa/235U) excesses in Central America or other arcs. On Th isotope equiline plots, the model produces linear arrays that resemble isochrons but that have no age significance. Instead, these arrays are generated by mixing of melts from sources that have experienced fluid addition and partial melting over a range of time intervals, as seems likely in arc source regions. Finally, the flux-ingrowth model predicts considerable 226Ra excesses for integrated magmas. If we assume that 226Ra is added continuously with the slab-derived fluid, the model predicts large and increasing (226Ra/230Th) with increasing melting and slab-component addition, without requiring the addition of a distinct late fluid.  相似文献

Located at the volcanic front in the western Mexican arc, in the Colima Rift, is the active Volcán Colima, which lies on the southern end of the massive (∼450 km3) Colima-Nevado volcanic complex. Along the margins of this andesitic volcanic complex, is a group of 11 scoria cones and associated lavas, which have been dated by the 40Ar/39Ar method. Nine scoria cones erupted ∼1.3 km3 of alkaline magma (basanite, leucite-basanite, minette) between 450 and 60 ka, with >99% between 240 and 60 ka. Two additional cones (both the oldest and calc-alkaline) erupted <0.003 km3 of basalt (0.5 Ma) and <0.003 km3 of basaltic andesite (1.2 Ma), respectively. Cone and lava volumes were estimated with the aid of digital elevation models (DEMs). The eruption rate for these scoria cones and their associated lavas over the last 1.2 Myr is ∼1.2 km3/Myr, which is more than 400 times smaller than that from the andesitic Colima-Nevado edifice. In addition to these alkaline Colima cones, two other potassic basalts erupted at the volcanic front, but ∼200 km to the ESE (near the historically active Volcán Jorullo), and were dated at 1.06 and 0.10 Ma. These potassic suites reflect the tendency in the west-central Mexican arc for magmas close to the volcanic front to be enriched in K2O relative to those farther from the trench.Ferric-ferrous analyses on pristine samples from the alkaline cones adjacent to V. Colima and V. Jorullo indicate that their oxygen fugacities relative to the nickel-nickel oxide buffer are significantly higher (ΔNN0=2–4) than those for the calc-alkaline magma types (0–1.5). These ΔNNO values correlate positively with Ba concentrations and likely reflect the influence of a slab-derived fluid. As a result of the high oxidation states, the solubility of sulfur in these potassic magmas is enhanced. Indeed the sulfur content of both the whole rock and the apatite phenocrysts (and in olivine melt inclusions reported in the literature) suggest that part of their pre-eruptive sulfur gas (SO2) concentrations could have been discharged to the atmosphere in amounts comparable to the 1982 eruption of El Chichón, although over a prolonged period spanning thousands of years (not per eruption).Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at Editorial responsibility: J. The effect of pressure and composition on the viscosity of both anhydrous and hydrous andesitic melts was studied in the viscosity range of 108 to 1011.5 Pa · s using parallel plate viscometry. The pressure dependence of the viscosity of three synthetic, iron-free liquids (andesite analogs) containing 0.0, 1.06, and 1.96 wt.% H2O, respectively, was measured from 100 to 300 MPa using a high-P-T viscometer. These results, combined with those from Richet et al. (1996), indicate that viscosities of anhydrous andesitic melts are independent of pressure, whereas viscosities of hydrous melts slightly increase with increasing pressure. This trend is consistent with an increased degree of depolymerization in the hydrous melts. Compositional effects on the viscosity were studied by comparing iron-free and iron-bearing compositions with similar degrees of depolymerization. During experiments at atmospheric and at elevated pressures (100 to 300 MPa), the viscosity of iron-bearing anhydrous melts preequilibrated in air continuously increased, and the samples became paramagnetic. Analysis of these samples by transmission electron microscopy showed a homogeneous distribution of crystals (probably magnetite) with sizes in the range of 10 to 50 nm. No significant difference in the volume fractions of crystals was found in samples after annealing for 170 to 830 min at temperatures ranging from 970 to 1122 K. An iron-bearing andesite containing 1.88 wt.% H2O, which was synthesized at intrinsic fO2 conditions in an internally heated pressure vessel, showed a similar viscosity behavior as the anhydrous melts. The continuous increase in viscosity at a constant temperature is attributed to changes of the melt structure due to exsolution of iron-rich phases. By extrapolating the time evolution of viscosity down to the time at which the run temperature was reached, for both the anhydrous (at 1055 K) and the hydrous (at 860 K) iron-bearing andesite, the viscosity is 0.7 log units lower than predicted by the model of Richet et al. (1996). This may be explained by differences in structural properties of Fe2+ and Fe3+ and their substitutes Mg2+, Ca2+, and Al3+, which were used in the analogue composition.The effect of iron redox state on the viscosity of anhydrous, synthetic andesite melts was studied at ambient pressure using a dilatometer. Reduced iron-bearing samples were produced by annealing melts in graphite crucibles in an Ar/CO atmosphere for different run times. In contrast to the oxidized sample, no variation of viscosity with time and no exsolution of iron oxide phases was observed for the most reduced glasses. This indicates that trivalent iron promotes the exsolution of iron oxide in supercooled melts. With decreasing Fe3+/ΣFe ratio from 0.58 to 0.34, the viscosity decreases by ∼1.6 log units in the investigated temperature range between 964 and 1098 K. A more reduced glass with Fe3+/ΣFe = 0.21 showed no additional decrease in viscosity. Our conclusion from these results is that the viscosity of natural melts may be largely overestimated when using data obtained from samples synthesized in air.  相似文献

This paper explores social, and economic aspects of coastal communities crucial to the management of estuaries in the Pacific Northwest. These aspects include the changing demographics and economies of coastal communities, and the public perceptions, attitudes, and values pertaining to estuarine ecosystems. Information from Willapa Bay and Grays Harbor in Washington and Tillamook, Yaquina, and Coos Bays in Oregon shows that the coastal communities are growing more slowly than the states overall., that the populations are relatively old, and that, although the local economies continue to rely on them, the extractive natural resource industries (fishing, aquaculture, agriculture, forest products) are declining in importance relative to tourism, recreation, and retirement industries. These trends suggest that human uses of the estuaries are changing in character, and altering the management problems. Coastal residents choose to live in these communities to enjoy the views and scenery, to experience rural living, to be near the ocean, and to recreate outdoors. People express coherent perceptions of risks to the estuaries, especially the threats of declining fish habitats, oil spills, shoreline development, invasive species, and logging in upland areas> Residential land values are enhanced by the presence of wetlands and forests and are diminished by the presence of hazardous waste sites. We conclude that, if recent trends in population age structure, income sources, and employment status continue, public attitudes and values will move towards stronger environmental protection. Because ecosystem management involves local public participation and collaboration, estuarine managers will be faced with both increased demands and opportunities.  相似文献

Climate variability acutely affects rural livelihoods and agricultural productivity, yet it is just one of many stresses that vulnerable rural households have to cope with. A livelihood approach is used to assess the potential role that seasonal climate forecasts might play in increasing adaptive capacity in response to climate variability, using Lesotho as a case study. An examination of the assets and strategies that rural households employ enables a holistic assessment of the impact seasonal forecasts could have on rural livelihoods. This research thereby bridges macro-level variability with local-level impacts and adaptation to provide insight into the dynamics of forecast use and impact among vulnerable groups.  相似文献

We present V and I photometry of two open clusters in the LMC down to V ∼26. The clusters were imaged with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on board the Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ), as part of the Medium Deep Survey Key Project. Both are low-luminosity ( MV ∼−3.5), low-mass ( M ∼103 M⊙) systems. The chance discovery of these two clusters in two parallel WFPC2 fields suggests a significant incompleteness in the LMC cluster census near the bar. One of the clusters is roughly elliptical and compact, with a steep light profile, a central surface brightness μ V (0)∼20.2 mag arcsec−2, a half-light radius r hl∼0.9 pc (total visual major diameter D ∼3 pc) and an estimated mass M ∼1500 M⊙. From the colour–magnitude diagram and isochrone fits we estimate its age as τ∼(2–5)×108 yr. Its mass function has a fitted slope of Γ=Δlogφ( M )/Δlog M =−1.8±0.7 in the range probed (0.9≲ M /M⊙≲4.5). The other cluster is more irregular and sparse, having shallower density and surface brightness profiles. We obtain Γ=−1.2±0.4, and estimate its mass as M ∼400 M⊙. A derived upper limit for its age is τ≲5×108 yr. Both clusters have mass functions with slopes similar to that of R136, a massive LMC cluster, for which HST results indicate Γ∼−1.2. They also seem to be relaxed in their cores and well contained in their tidal radii.  相似文献

A testing program was initiated to determine the stress-strain and strength behavior of two very different marine sands (a calcareous sediment from South Australia and a siliceous sediment from the United Kingdom) at elevated confining pressures. The testing matrix consisted of a series of isotropically consolidated, undrained (CIU) and drained (CID), triaxial compression tests on samples of naturally deposited calcareous and siliceous sediment and remolded calcareous sediment. It was found that the calcareous samples displayed little cemented behavior during shear. For tests conducted at pressures up to 1.5 MPa, a significant amount of particle crushing occurred in the calcareous samples but not in the siliceous samples. Particle degradation and reorientation facilitates transitions from dilative to contractive behavior with increases in confining stress. The calcareous sediment exhibited contractive behavior at confining pressures above approximately 500 kPa and the siliceous sediment remained dilative at stresses up to 1 MPa during undrained loading. Comparison with data collected by the University of Sydney (CID tests with confining pressures up to 60 MPa) showed that most of the variations in strength behavior occurred within the low stress range (up to 2 MPa) tests conducted at URI. This was evident in the friction angle data and in the reloading Young's modulus data.  相似文献

Depth profiles of solute chemistry and sulfate isotopic compositions are presented for groundwater and pore water in a sequence of Quaternary glacial outwash sediments. Sand units show evidence for hydraulic connection to the surface and thus modern sources of solutes. Finer‐grained sediments show a general pattern of increasing solute concentrations with depth, with sulfate derived from ancient rainwater and pyrite oxidation in the soil/drift. In these sediments sulfate has undergone bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR) to produce biogenic sulfide. In clay sediments, with d10 ≤ 1·6 µm, high concentrations of sulfate and acetate now co‐exist, implying that BSR is inhibited. The correlation with smaller sediment grain size indicates that this is due to pore size exclusion of the sulfate reducing bacteria. Mechanical restriction of microbial function thus provides a fundamental limitation on microbial respiration in buried clay‐rich sediments, which acts as a control on the chemical evolution of their pore waters.
