Some 65 years ago, C. E. Tilley, in his 1950 Presidential Address to the Geological Society of London, brought into sharp focus the then perhaps-not-fully-recognised problem of the origin of what he termed the ‘orogenic andesites’—and, in particular, their commonly constituent calc-alkaline lineage of lavas and pyroclastic materials. In spite of much investigation and progress since, the problem remains not fully resolved. The two most conspicuous features of such orogenic—i.e. island arc—volcanism are its copious, explosive, degassing and, as Tilley noted, its copious development of andesites and their more felsic associates. If these rock types were derived from basalt, the principal relevant changes in major element composition are reductions in Fe, Ca and Mg, and increases in Si, Al and (Na + K). Four principal mechanisms for inducing these changes have been proposed: (1) magmatic differentiation induced by fractional crystallisation, (2) magma mixing, (3) partial melting of an ultramafic-derived basaltic parent, and (4) crustal contamination. A fifth postulate—long recognised but only occasionally seriously considered—is that loss in the volatile phase during eruption and later degassing may make a significant contribution to the overall process. On the basis that Tilley's (and others’) orogenic basalt–andesite–dacite–rhyolite series constitutes a linear arrangement on the conventional FeOt–MgO–(Na2O + K2O) diagram it is shown on numerical grounds that fractional crystallisation alone cannot account for the observed compositional trend—that, while accumulates are neither uncommon nor insubstantial in amount in modern arcs, they are olivine-rich, not magnetite-rich, and that numerical, petrological and field evidence indicates that the high oxidation/magnetite subtraction hypothesis of orogenic andesite genesis can no longer be seriously entertained. The partial melting hypothesis encounters contrary numerical evidence, closely analogous with that adduced for fractional crystallisation. Magma mixing eventually encounters the difficulty of the nature of the felsic material required for rhyolite formation, and assimilation of the preservation of primitive isotope ratios as lava evolution progresses. A fifth mechanism—volatile loss—may make a significant contribution to the relevant compositional change, perhaps in combination with one or more of the other proposed processes. Geochemical, petrological and field evidence pertaining to this is reviewed and examined, and it is postulated that indeed a combination of fractional crystallisation as the principal mechanism, volatile loss as a contributing factor, provides a plausible process. A case is made for an exploratory experimental investigation of the possibility of significant loss in a gas/vapour phase.  相似文献

We use statistical correlation of palaeomagnetic secular variation (PSV) curves from a varved Holocene lake sediment sequence in west central Sweden (Lake Kälksjön) against those of a Fennoscandian master stack (FENNOSTACK) to correct for an apparent error in the varve chronology. Additional correlation between a lead pollution-derived chronology for the last 2000 years corroborates the PSV results. Use of the FENNOSTACK palaeomagnetic master curve reveals no significant difference in duration between large-scale features from ~2500 to ~8000 cal. yrs BP. Statistical correlation, however, implies that 270 years are missing from the younger part (<1000 cal. yrs BP) of the varve chronology, and that there is an overestimation by approximately 230 years in the number of varves counted in the early Holocene (>8000 cal. yrs BP). A similar comparison between the PSV-determined ages and calibrated bulk radiocarbon ages suggests that the sediments of mid-Holocene age contain substantial amounts of old carbon, probably of soil origin, which causes bulk sediment-calibrated mean 14C ages to be up to 850 years older than the corrected varve chronology, which extends to 9193 ± 186 cal. yrs BP. This study highlights both the use of statistical correlation as a technique for detecting errors between chronologies, and the importance of validating incremental chronologies with more than one independent method.  相似文献

Sulphur isotope measurements on five Australian stratiform lead-zinc sulphide ores are presented. Each deposit is characterised by a conspicuously narrow spread of values, mean 34S heavier than meteoritic, average crustal, and, where sampled stratigraphically, 34S related to stratigraphy rather than propinquity. When considered with other deposits of the same class from elsewhere, several seemingly general features appear: Mean 34S heavier than meteoritics; ranges for individual deposits narrow and rarely more than 8 with standard deviation approximately 1 to 2; individual values for the whole group spread between, but almost entirely restricted by, the values for meteoritic S and seawater SO4 ; no age effect; no apparent relationship between 34S and lead type; and, where investigated, a stratigraphical affiliation. While no positive interpretation of these features is made, it is suggested that the sulphur concerned has been derived neither from migrant hydro-thermal solutions nor from the H2S of normal biological sulphate reduction in seawater.
Zusammenfassung Es werden Meßergebnisse von fünf australischen geschichteten Blei-Zink-Sulfid-Lagerstätten mitgeteilt: Jedes Vorkommen ist durch einen bemerkenswert engen Schwankungsbereich der Werte, Mittelwert 34S schwerer als meteoritischer Schwefel/Durchschnittswert aus der Erdkruste, gekennzeichnet. Wo die Proben in stratigraphischer Abfolge entnommen wurden, zeigt der Wert 34S eine stärkere Affinität zur Stratigraphie als zu absoluter Entfernung der Muster. Vergleicht man diese Werte mit solchen von anderen Vorkommen der nämlichen Lagerstättengruppe, so liegen einige allgemeine Eigenheiten auf der Hand: Für einige Vorkommen ist der Mittelwert 34S schwerer als meteoritischer Schwefel; für einzelne Lagerstätten ist der Bereich eng und überschreitet kaum mehr als 8 mit der Standardabweichung von ungefähr 1 bis 2; Einzelwerte für die gesamte Lagerstättengruppe fallen fast ausschließlich zwischen die Werte für meteoritischen Schwefel und SO4 2–-Ionen im Meerwasser; es herrscht kein dem geologischen Alter zuzuschreibender Effekt; auch gibt es keine augenscheinliche Beziehung zwischen dem 34S-Wert und dem Blei-Typ; in jenen Fällen aber, wo Untersuchungsergebnisse vorliegen, ist eine Beziehung der Werte zur Stratigraphie zu erkennen. Obwohl keine positive Interpretation dieser Phänomena angestellt wurde, wird die Vermutung geäußert, daß der betreffende sulfidische Schwefel weder von wandernden hydrothermalen Lösungen noch vom H2S einer normalen biologischen Sulfatreduktion im Meerwasser abgeleitet werden kann.

We describe a fast response methane sensor based on the absorption of radiation generated with a near-infrared InGaAsP diode laser. The sensor uses an open path absorption region 0.5 m long; multiple pass optics provide an optical path of 50 m. High frequency wavelength modulation methods give stable signals with detection sensitivity (S/N=1, 1 Hz bandwidth) for methane of 65 ppb at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. Improvements in the optical stability are expected to lower the current detection limit. We used the new sensor to measure, by eddy correlation, the CH4 flux from a clay-capped sanitary landfill. Simultaneously we measured the flux of CO2 and H2O. From seven half-hourly periods of data collected after a rainstorm on November 23, 1991, the average flux of CH4 was 17 mmol m–2 hr–1 (6400 mg CH4 m–2 d–1) with a coefficient of variation of 25%. This measurement may underrepresent the flux by 15% due to roll-off of the sensor response at high frequency. The landfill was also a source of CO2 with an average flux of 8.1 mmol m–2 hr–1 (8550 mg CO2 m–2 d–1) and a coefficient of variation of 26%. A spectral analysis of the data collected from the CH4, CO2, and H2O sensors showed a strong similarity in the turbulent transfer mechanisms.  相似文献

On 14 January and 6 October 2008 the MESSENGER spacecraft passed within 200 km of the surface of Mercury. These flybys by MESSENGER provided the first observations of Mercury from a spacecraft since the Mariner 10 flybys in 1974 and 1975. Data from the Mercury Laser Altimeter (MLA) provided new information on the equatorial shape of Mercury, and Doppler tracking of the spacecraft through the flybys provided new data on the planet’s gravity field. The MLA passes were on opposite hemispheres of the planet and span collectively ∼40% of the equatorial circumference. The mean elevation of topography observed during flyby 1, in the longitude range 0-90°E, is greater than that seen during flyby 2 in the longitude range 180-270°E, indicating an offset between centers of mass and figure having a magnitude and phase in general agreement with topography determined by Earth-based radar. Both MLA profiles are characterized by slopes of ∼0.015° downward to the east, which is consistent with a long-wavelength equatorial shape defined by a best-fitting ellipse. The Doppler tracking data show sensitivity to the gravitational structure of Mercury. The equatorial ellipticity of the gravitational field, C2,2, is well determined and correlates with the equatorial shape. The S2,2 coefficient is ∼0, as would be expected if Mercury’s coordinate system, defined by its rotational state, is aligned along its principal axes of inertia. The recovered value of the polar flattening of the gravitational potential, J2, is considerably lower in magnitude than the value obtained from Mariner 10 tracking, a result that is problematic for internal structure models. This parameter is not as well constrained as the equatorial ellipticity because the flyby trajectories were nearly in the planet’s equatorial plane. The residuals from the Doppler tracking data suggest the possibility of mascons on Mercury, but flyby observations are of insufficient resolution for confident recovery. For a range of assumptions on degree of compensation and crustal and mantle densities, the allowable crustal thickness is consistent with the upper limit of about 100 km estimated from the inferred depth of faulting beneath a prominent lobate scarp, an assumed ductile flow law for crustal material, and the condition that temperature at the base of the crust does not exceed the solidus temperature. The MESSENGER value of C2,2 has allowed an improved estimate of the ratio of the polar moment of inertia of the mantle and crust to the full polar moment (Cm/C), a refinement that strengthens the conclusion that Mercury has at present a fluid outer core.  相似文献

It has long been known that the statistical properties of acoustic echoes from individual fish can have non-Rayleigh characteristics. The statistical properties of echoes from zooplankton are generally less understood. In this study, echoes from individual fish and zooplankton from a series of laboratory measurements from the past decade are investigated. In the experiments, acoustic echoes from various individual organisms were measured over a wide range of frequencies and orientations, typically in 1/spl deg/-3/spl deg/ increments. In the analysis in this paper, the echoes from most of those measurements are grouped according to ranges of orientation, which correspond to typical orientation distributions of these organisms in the natural ocean environment. This grouping provides a distribution of echo values for each range of orientation. This approach, in essence, emulates a field experiment whereby distributions of echoes would be recorded for different distributions of orientations of the organisms. For both the fish and zooplankton data, there are conditions under which the echoes are strongly non-Rayleigh distributed. In some cases, the distribution is quantitatively connected to the physics of the scattering process while, in other cases, the connection is described qualitatively. Exploitation of the animal-specific statistics for classification purposes is suggested.  相似文献
