Metamorphic mineral assemblages determined in thin-sections have been used to compile metamorphic maps showing the distribution of metamorphic facies and minerals in Zambia. These maps lead to the recognition of two non-parallel metamorphic belts. The Lufilian Belt curves along the southern margin of the Lufilian (structural) Arc, and the Luangwa—Kariba Belt covers the entire eastern and south-eastern borders of the country. Stratigraphic and mineralogical relationships, and radiometric data, indicate that the two belts are contemporaneous and their present major features are the result of a single tectonothermal episode which ended c. 500 m.y. ago. We present high-time-resolution optical photometry of the eclipsing binary UZ For using a superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) device, a photon-counting array detector with intrinsic energy resolution. Three eclipses of the ∼18-mag 126.5-min orbital binary were observed using a 6×6 array of tantalum STJs at the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma. The detector presently provides individual photon arrival-time accuracy to about 5 μs, and a wavelength resolution of about 60 nm at 500 nm, with each array element capable of counting up to ∼5000 photon s−1 . The data allow us to place accurate constraints on the accretion geometry from our time- and spectrally resolved monitoring, especially of the eclipse ingress and egress. We find that there are two small accretion regions, located close to the poles of the white dwarf. The positions of these are accurately constrained, and show little movement from eclipse to eclipse, even over a number of years. The colour of the emission from the two regions appears similar, although their X-ray properties are known to be significantly different: we argue that the usual accretion shock may be absent at the non-X-ray-emitting region, and instead the flow here interacts directly with the white dwarf surface; alternatively, a special grazing occultation of this region is required. There is no evidence for any quasi-periodic oscillations on time-scales of the order of seconds, consistent with relatively stable cyclotron cooling in each accretion region. 相似文献

Observations of Uranus during the 1975, 1976, and 1978 apparitions reveal a weak absorption at the wavelength of the R5(1) line of HD with equivalent width . The ratio in Uranus' atmosphere implied by this line and other published spectra is (4.8 ± 1.5) × 10?5, and may not be significantly different from that in the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn. In addition, the spectra exhibit two weak absorption at which we were unable to identify. No trace of absorption is visible near these wavelengths or near the HD wavelength in a laboratory spectrum of 4.92 km-am CH4 which we obtained in an attempt to identify these absorption features and to verify that the HD feature does not arise from CH4. 相似文献

The results of B -band CCD imaging linear polarimetry obtained for stars from the Hipparcos catalogue are used to re-examine the distribution of the local interstellar medium towards the IRAS 100-μm emission void in the Lupus dark clouds. The analysis of the obtained parallax–polarization diagram assigns to the dark cloud Lupus 1 a distance between 130 and 150 pc and assures the existence of a low column density region coincident with the observed infrared void. Moreover, there are clear indications of the existence of absorbing material at distances closer than 60–100 pc, which may be associated with the interface boundary between the Local Bubble and its neighbourhood Loop I superbubble. 相似文献

We present optical observations of the recently discovered ROSAT source RX J1238 − 38, which is a new member of the intermediate polar class of asynchronous magnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs). Optical photometry reveals two coherent periodicities at 1860 and 2147 s respectively, with similar amplitudes of ∼ 8 per cent. Infrared ( J -band) intensity variations are detected only at the 1860-s period, at an amplitude of ∼ 15 per cent. The initial hypothesis, that these two periods were the spin and synodic (i.e., beat) period respectively, appears not to be supported by the spectroscopic data. The emission lines vary on the longer photometric period, and radial velocity variations are detected at this period and at a longer period of ∼ 5300 s, which we identify as the spin and orbital periods respectively. The most likely explanation for the 1860-s period is that it is the first harmonic of the ω − Ω sideband, leading to an improved determination of the orbital period as 5077 s (= 84 min). If this interpretation is correct, RX J1238 − 38 joins EX Hya as the only other intermediate polar below the 2–3 h period gap, and with an orbital period close to the minimum for CVs with non-degenerate secondaries. The spin-modulated emission-line radial velocities and widths appear to be anticorrelated, with maximum width occurring at maximum blueshift. Such an anticorrelation is expected for aspect changes of accretion curtains. Polarimetric observations of RX J1238 − 38 were inconclusive, although we can put a limit of 0.4 per cent on any variability on the circular polarization, and certainly there is no indication of variations at the photometric or spectroscopic periods. 相似文献
