The presence of a first-order unconformity in the central part of the Scandinavian Caledonides, linking together early Ordovician/late Cambrian outboard oceanic ternes and the continental margin of Baltic, is of considerable importance for interpreting the geodynamic framework of the orogen. We present results from XMM–Newton observations of the obscured quasi-stellar object 1SAX J1218.9+2958. We find that the previously reported optical and soft X-ray counterpart positions are incorrect. However, we confirm the spectroscopic redshift of 0.176. The optical counterpart has a K magnitude of 13.5 and an R – K colour of 5.0 and is therefore a bright extremely red object. The X-ray spectrum is well described by a power law (Γ= 2.0 ± 0.2) absorbed by an intrinsic neutral column density of 8.2+1.1 −0.7 × 1022 cm−2 . We find that any scattered emission contributes at most 0.5 per cent to the total X-ray flux. From the optical/near-infrared colour we estimate that the active nucleus must contribute at least 50 per cent of the total flux in the K band and that the ratio of extinction to X-ray absorption is 0.1–0.7 times that expected from a Galactic dust–gas ratio and extinction curve. If 1SAX J1218.9+2958 were 100 times less luminous it would be indistinguishable from the population responsible for most of the 2–10 keV X-ray background. We present an analysis of the X-ray spectra of two strongly magnetic cataclysmic variables, DP Leo and WW Hor, made using XMM-Newton . Both systems were in intermediate levels of accretion. Hard optically thin X-ray emission from the shocked accreting gas was detected from both systems, while a soft blackbody X-ray component from the heated surface was detected only in DP Leo. We suggest that the lack of a soft X-ray component in WW Hor is owing to the fact that the accretion area is larger than in previous observations with a resulting lower temperature for the re-processed hard X-rays. Using a multi-temperature model of the post-shock flow, we estimate that the white dwarf in both systems has a mass greater than 1 M⊙ . The implications of this result are discussed. We demonstrate that the 'soft X-ray excess' observed in many magnetic cataclysmic variables can be partially attributed to using an inappropriate model for the hard X-ray emission. 相似文献

We present optical observations of the recently discovered ROSAT source RX J1238 − 38, which is a new member of the intermediate polar class of asynchronous magnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs). Optical photometry reveals two coherent periodicities at 1860 and 2147 s respectively, with similar amplitudes of ∼ 8 per cent. Infrared ( J -band) intensity variations are detected only at the 1860-s period, at an amplitude of ∼ 15 per cent. The initial hypothesis, that these two periods were the spin and synodic (i.e., beat) period respectively, appears not to be supported by the spectroscopic data. The emission lines vary on the longer photometric period, and radial velocity variations are detected at this period and at a longer period of ∼ 5300 s, which we identify as the spin and orbital periods respectively. The most likely explanation for the 1860-s period is that it is the first harmonic of the ω − Ω sideband, leading to an improved determination of the orbital period as 5077 s (= 84 min). If this interpretation is correct, RX J1238 − 38 joins EX Hya as the only other intermediate polar below the 2–3 h period gap, and with an orbital period close to the minimum for CVs with non-degenerate secondaries. The spin-modulated emission-line radial velocities and widths appear to be anticorrelated, with maximum width occurring at maximum blueshift. Such an anticorrelation is expected for aspect changes of accretion curtains. Polarimetric observations of RX J1238 − 38 were inconclusive, although we can put a limit of 0.4 per cent on any variability on the circular polarization, and certainly there is no indication of variations at the photometric or spectroscopic periods. 相似文献
