Viking photographs have revealed extraordinary systems of crudely polygonal troughs in three different areas of the northern plains of Mars. Trough widths average 200–800 m and average trough spacing is 5–10 km. The widest troughs have flat floors and steep sides which suggest that they are either grabens or tension cracks which have been partially filled. The following three arguments support the garben interpretation: (1) Two clear examples of vertical offsets along trough walls indicate that the troughs formed by downdropping of the floors. (2) Troughs similar in scale and morphology to those of the Martian northern plains form concentric and radial patterns in the Caloris Basin on Mercury. Most likely, they are extensional fractures or grabens resulting from uplift of the basin floor (Strom et al., 1975). The Caloris analogy suggests that the troughs on Mars are similar tectonic features related either to uplift or expansion of the planet. Fourteen rose diagrams of trough azimuths in southeastern Acidalia Planita show that locally they exhibit preferred orientations roughly parallel to the topographic contours, but overall there is no strong regional pattern. (3) The scale of tension crack systems is limited by the depth of fracturing because the extent of stress relief perpendicular to a crack is proportional to the crack depth. Observations of terrestrial tension cracks suggest a lower limit on crack depths of about one-tenth of the average spacing. Thus, if the Martian troughs are tension cracks, they would be expected to have depths of at least 500–1000 m. Mechanical considerations indicate that it is difficult to generate such deep cracks by surficial tension due to thermal cooling and contraction in permafrost, desiccation, or cooling of lava flows. The density distributions of the two main components in interstellar hydrogen are calculated using 21 cm line data from the Berkeley Survey and the Pulkovo Survey. The narrow, dense component (state I of neutral hydrogen) has a Gaussianz-distribution with a scale-height of 50 pc in the local zones (the galactic disk). For the wide, tenuous component (hydrogen in state II) we postulate a distribution valid in the zones where such a material predominates (70 pc?z? 350 pc the galactic stratum) i.e., $$n_H \left( z \right) = n_H \left( 0 \right)exp \left( { - \left( {z/300{\text{ }}pc} \right)^{3/2} } \right).$$ Similar components are found in the dust distribution and in the available stellar data reaching sufficiently highz-altitudes. The scale-heights depend on the stellar type: the stratum in M III stars is considerably wider than in A stars (500–700 pc against 300 pc). The gas to dust ratio is approximately the same in both components: 0.66 atom cm?3 mag?1 kpc in the galactic plane. A third state of the gas is postulated associating it the observed free electron stratum at a scale-height of 660 pc (hydrogen fully ionized at high temperatures). The ratio between the observed dispersions in neutral hydrogen (thermal width plus turbulence) and the total dispersions corresponding to the real inner energies in the medium is obtained by a comparison with the dispersion distribution σ(z) of the different stellar types associated with the disk and the stratum $$\sigma ^2 \left( {total} \right) = \sigma ^2 \left( {21{\text{ cm line}}} \right) \cdot {\text{ }}Q^2 ,$$ from which we graphically obtainedQ 2=2.9 ± 0.3, although that number could be lower in the densest parts of the spiral arms. Its dependence on magnetic field and cosmic rays is analysed, indicating equipartition of the different energy components in the interstellar medium and consistency with the observed values of the magnetic field: i.e., fluctuations with an average of ~ 3 μG (associated with the disk) in a homogeneous background of ~ 1 μG (associated with the stratum). A minimum and maximumK z-force are obtained assuming extreme conditions for the total density distribution (gas plus stars). TheK z-force obtained from the interstellar gas in its different states using approximations of the Boltzmann equation is a reasonable intermediate case between maximum and minimumK z. The mass density obtained in the galactic plane is 0.20±0.05M ⊙ pc?3, and the results indicate that the galactic disk is somewhat narrower and denser than has usually been believed. The effects of wave-like distributions of matter in thez-coordinate are analysed in relation with theK z-force, and comparisons with theoretical results are performed. A qualitative model for the galactic field of force is postulated together with a classification of the different zones of the Galaxy according to their observed ranges in velocity dispersions and the behaviour of the potential well at differentz-altitudes. The disk containing at least two-thirds of the total mass atz<100 pc, the stratum containing one-third or less of the total mass atz≤600–800 pc, and the halo at higherz-altitudes with a small fraction of such a mass which is difficult to evaluate. 相似文献

The convective stability of a simple model chromosphere, consisting of protons, electrons and hydrogen atoms in the ground state, has been studied in the presence of a vertically upward uniform magnetic field to include the effects of FLR, Hall-currents, finite conductivity and ionization. We report on taking, successfully, the rare opportunity to monitor photoelectrically the eclipse of Saturn's largest satellite (Titan) and present a light curve. Polarimetric, photometric, and reflectance spectroscopic properties of asteroid 44 Vesta are simulated in the laboratory by a preparation of eucrite Bereba consisting oof a broad mixture of particle sizes (mainly greater than 50-μm) mixed and partially coated with particles of size 10 μm and less. Coarse grains are necessary for producing the same albedo and a very fine dust coating is necessary for producing the same polarization inversion angle as observed for Vesta. There are less small grains and fine dust in this sample than in lunar soils. Photometrically, if coating a sphere, this sample shows a constant brightness on the sunward half of the observed hemisphere, the brightness being given on the other half by the Minnaert reciprocity principle. With such a photometric behavior, the global geometric albedo and the sub-Earth point geometric albedo differ by no more than 5%. The microscopic phase coefficient β is 0.021 magnitude per degree for the sample; the larger value, β = 0.025, observed telescopically for Vesta indicates that large-scale roughness is present on this asteroid. 相似文献

The sizes, composition, and number of particles comprising the rings of Saturn may be meaningfully constrained by a combination of radar- and radio-astronomical observations. In a previous paper, we have discussed constraints obtained from radar observations. In this paper, we discuss the constraints imposed by complementary “passive” radio observations at similar wavelengths. First, we present theoretical models of the brightness of Saturn's rings at microwave wavelengths (0.34–21.0 cm), including both intrinsic ring emission and diffuse scattering by the rings of the planetary emission. The models are accurate simulations of the behavior of realistic ring particles and are parameterized only by particle composition and size distribution, and ring optical depth. Second, we have reanalyzed several previously existing sets of interferometric observations of the Saturn system at 0.83-, 3.71-, 6.0-, 11.1-, and 21.0-cm wavelengths. These observations all have spatial resolution sufficient to resolve the rings and planetary disk, and most have resolution sufficient to resolve the ring-occulted region of the disk as well. Using our ring models and a realistic model of the planetary brightness distribution, we are able to establish improved constraints on the properties of the rings. In particular, we find that: (a) the maximum optical depth in the rings is ~ 1.5 ± 0.3 referred to visible wavelengths; (b) a significant decrease in ring optical depth from λ3.7 to λ21.0 cm allows us to rule out the possibility that more than ~30% of the cross section of the rings is composed of particles larger than a meter or so; this assertion is essentially independent of uncertainties in particle adsorption coefficient; and (c) the ring particles cannot be primarily of silicate composition, independently of particle size, and the particles cannot be primarily smaller than ~0.1 cm, independently of composition. 相似文献

The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) program will produce an extremely sensitive all-sky survey over the wavelength region 8 to 120 μm when the mission is flown in 1982. These data will provide a novel opportunity to detect planetary-sized objects having masses <0.08M⊙ or near our solar system. According to radiometric dating of lunar rocks, meteoroidal bombardment and accompanying cratering on the Moon were intensive in the first 0.7×109 y, the so-calledterra stage. Recently the hypothesis of a terminal cataclysm has been gaining acceptance, meaning that a sharp increase in the bombardment followed by a steep decay occurred at the end of theterra stage.The purpose of this paper is to investigate possible variations in the intensity of the bombardment during theterra stage by analyzing the population of large (3–1000 km)terra craters and comparing it with results obtained by theoretical models. The proportion of fresh craters is specifically used.Observational data were obtained by studying the craters on an oldterra surface photographed by Zond 8 and/or covered by LTO and LM maps and by conducting a statistical study of theterra listed in the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Catalog. Mathematical models were developed in such a way as to make them dimensionless, and as such applicable even without the knowledge of the physical constants and variables involved. Particularly powerful is the method of measuring time as multiples of the average lifetime of a crater of that size.The following conclusions and/or interpretations are reached. (1) A crater remains fresh for less than 20% of the average life of a crater of that size. (2) A condition of equilibrium (i.e., on the average, a new impact does not cause a net increase in the total number of craters) is reached or almost reached on lunarterrae. (3) The age of theterra surface is more than three average lifetimes of the 2 km to at least 20 km size craters (4) The observedterra crater population isnot the result of two cataclysms, one at the beginning of the stage and one at the end. (5) This population, however, could be the result of a constant or slowly decaying flux continuing until the end of the stage, when the terminal cataclysms occurred. This sequence of events cannot be proven or disproven. (6) If no terminal cataclysm occurred, then the meteoroidal flux during theterra stage was slowly decaying or constant. (7) The formation of all the large multi-ringed basins essentially contemporaneously is doubtful. 相似文献

Series of white light heliograms and oft- and on-band H filtergrams have been obtained, with an average spatial resolution of 1, to study the flare active McMath region 15403 on 11 July, 1978. A great number of accurate heliographic positions were determined for the umbrae, the white light flare patches and several bright H flare knots, as well as along the principal zero filament and an arch prominence. Using the measured heliographic coordinates of these objects their motions could be analyzed in some detail. The velocities of several different objects could be deduced from the coordinates. Since the heliocentric angle of the region was about 45°, the variation in apparent heliographic coordinates also enabled some variations in heights to be determined.It is pointed out that the flare when fully developed, consisted almost entirely of loops. The zero filament which was activated prior to the flare ran between two umbrae of common penumbra and opposite polarity, one belonging to an old, the other to a new spot group. The white light flare developed on both sides of the filament where it passed between these two umbrae; it was also the place where the flare started. Observational evidence appears to indicate that the erupted filament re-formed from below.An indication has been found that there was a link between the motion of some umbrae and the major flare occurrence. 相似文献

He i 10830 Å synoptic maps, obtained at the Kitt Peak National Observatory during 1974–1979, show that the Sun's polar coronal holes have contracted significantly during 1977–1978. Prior to the accelerated increase of sunspot activity in mid-1977, the area of each polar cap was on the order of 8% of the Sun's total surface area (4R
2), whereas toward the end of 1978 these areas fell below 2% of 4R
2. Synoptic polar plots show that the vestigual holes had irregular shapes and were often well removed from the poles themselves. These results are consistent with the changes that one would expect when the polar magnetic fields are weakening just prior to sunspot maximum. 相似文献
