Coral bleaching, i.e. the loss of dinoflagellate symbionts from cnidarian hosts, is occurring globally at increasing rates, scales, and severity. The significance of these bleaching events to the health of coral reef ecosystems is extreme, as bleached corals exhibit high mortality, reduced fecundity and productivity and increased susceptibility to disease. This decreased coral fitness leads to reef degradation and ultimately to the breakdown of the coral reef ecosystem. To date there has been little work describing the application of biomarkers to assess coral health. The most commonly applied biomarker is, in fact, the bleaching event itself. We are interested in developing early warning biomarkers that can detect coral stress before bleaching occurs. Recently, several genes that are likely to function in regulating interactions between cnidarians and their symbionts have been characterized, using the temperate sea anemone Anthopleura elegantissima as a model species. One "symbiosis gene" identified from the host genome, sym32, is expressed as a function of anemone symbiotic-state, where sym32 expression is higher in symbiotic cf. aposymbiotic (symbiont-free) anemones. Real-time quantitative RT-PCR suggested that the level of sym32 expression was correlated with the abundance of algae in the host. Furthermore, laboratory exposures of anemones to low levels of cadmium (0, 20, 100 microg(-1) CdCl2; 14 days), which caused no change in algal cell numbers, resulted in a down-regulation of sym32 compared to controls, indicating that sym32 expression may serve as a new sensitive early warning biomarker of cnidarian-algal symbiosis breakdown.  相似文献

There is a body of literature indicating that pre-exposure to low levels of metals may increase tolerance during subsequent exposure.1 We have previously demonstrated that exposure to cadmium at 100 to 500 μg/liter will retard the rate of fin regeneration in the killifish Fundulus heteroclitus.2 These experiments were designed to investigate the effects of pre-exposure to cadmium, using fin regeneration as the parameter of effect. The results indicate that pretreatment allows this species to regenerate faster during cadmium treatment as compared to non-pretreated fish, and that the relationship between the pretreatment and treatment concentrations is relevant to pretreatment effects.  相似文献

Regardless of destination, immigrants arrive with health profiles typical of people in their previous surroundings. Thus, immigrants change the epidemiological profile of destination communities, and immigrant neighborhoods may represent islands of infectious disease. Genotyping has emerged as a useful surveillance tool to track the spread of disease at the molecular level. Yet the spatial distribution of infectious disease at the molecular level associated with migration and immigrant neighborhoods has received little attention. Using molecular genotyping to characterize M. tuberculosis isolated from tuberculosis cases, this article analyzes spatial variations of unique molecular M. tuberculosis strains by zip code in Tarrant County, Texas. The results suggest that immigrant neighborhoods have higher rates of unique isolates of tuberculosis (suggestive of remote transmission) compared to neighborhoods occupied by the native‐born. Neighborhoods dominated by the native‐born have higher rates of clustered isolates (suggestive of recent transmission). Therefore, in addition to being culturally distinct, immigrant neighborhoods may also be pathogenically distinct from surrounding neighborhoods.  相似文献

We examined biomass accumulation, tissue concentrations of lead (Pb), and net uptake of Pb in Phragmites australis (common reed) and Spartina alterniflora (salt cord grass) grown under greenhouse conditions in sediment of different Pb concentrations. Sediment and newly emerged ramets of each plant species were collected in April 1999 from Tuckerton, NJ, a relatively clean salt marsh. One-gallon pots were filled with either control sediment (29 microg g(-1) Pb) or Pb-added sediment (68 microg g(-1) Pb), and the sediment moisture was kept saturated along with controlled additions of additional nutrients. At harvest in October, whole plant biomass was 60-85% greater for pots with P. australis than pots with S. alterniflora and a 40-70% reduction in biomass in response to the addition of Pb was observed for both species. In the high Pb treatments, both concentrations and pools of Pb were greater in the leaves of S. alterniflora than in leaves of P. australis at the end of the growing season. In both species, Pb concentrations were higher in lower leaves than upper leaves. The addition of Pb into experimental pots led to over an 800% increase in Pb standing stock for both species. In S. alterniflora, however, significantly more of this pool was allocated to aboveground biomass (leaves and stems) than to belowground biomass (roots and rhizomes). This difference in allocation was more profound at the higher sediment Pb concentration (Pb-added pots). This fundamental difference between the species in response to Pb contamination indicates that metal export into food webs or the water column should be greater in stands of S. alterniflora than in P. australis. These results suggest that in Pb-contaminated, and possibly all metal-contaminated sediments, the replacement of S. alterniflora with P. australis may reduce metal bioavailability by sequestering a greater proportion of its metal burden in belowground tissues which are likely to be permanently buried.  相似文献

The mechanical structure of the GREGOR telescope was installed at the Observatorio del Teide, Tenerife, in 2004. New concepts for mounting and cooling of the 1.5‐meter primary mirror were introduced. GREGOR is an open telescope, therefore the dome is completely open during observations to allow for air flushing through the open, but stiff telescope structure. Backside cooling system of the primary mirror keeps the mirror surface close to ambient temperature to prevent mirror seeing. The large collecting area of the primary mirror results in high energy density at the field stop at the prime focus of the primary which needs to be removed. The optical elements are supported by precision alignment systems and should provide a stable solar image at the optical lab. The coudé train can be evacuated and serves as a natural barrier between the outer environmental conditions and the air‐conditioned optical laboratory with its sensitive scientific instrumentation. Lithium isotope signatures of whole rock pegmatite samples and mineral separates from the rare element-bearing Little Nahanni Pegmatite Group, NWT, and whole rock samples from nearby granitic intrusions were measured. Correlation of the Li isotopic values from the pegmatite dikes with whole rock trace element geochemistry, mineralogy and primary textural evidence reflect mechanisms of Li isotopic fractionation during pegmatite formation. The heavier δ7Li signatures within the broad range measured from whole rock LNPG samples (? 0.94‰ to + 11.36‰) are related to the consolidation of the final ~ 15% melt fraction of a volatile-rich peraluminous magma in the late stages of magmatic fractionation. Rock-forming minerals (quartz, albite, spodumene and mica) display δ7Li signatures that indicate consolidation of the dikes under variable, non-equilibrium conditions. Lithium isotope signatures of relatively cool, highly evolved peraluminous magmas reflect the build-up of fluxes (e.g., H2O and F) and provide a qualitative assessment of the state of mineral/melt chemical equilibrium.  相似文献

We present new reference values for nineteen USGS, GSJ and GIT‐IWG rock reference materials that belong to the most accessed samples of the GeoReM database. The determination of the reference values and their uncertainties at the 95% confidence level follows as closely as possible ISO guidelines and the Certification Protocol of the International Association of Geoanalysts. We used analytical data obtained by the state‐of‐the‐art techniques published mainly in the last 20 years and available in GeoReM. The data are grouped into four categories of different levels of metrological confidence, starting with isotope dilution mass spectrometry as a primary method. Data quality was checked by careful investigation of analytical procedures and by the application of the Horwitz function. As a result, we assign a new and more reliable set of reference values and respective uncertainties for major, minor and a large group of trace elements of the nineteen investigated rock reference materials.  相似文献
