An object that is partially insonified by a collimated sound beam may have a scattering cross section sometimes much larger than when the object is totally covered by the incident beam. We quantitatively study this partial insonification problem here, under the classical method of physical optics. The importance of this study stems from the fact that partial coverage of the target by the beam is the situation most likely to occur in many cases of practical importance. We consider several basic target shapes partially insonified by finite beams. These shapes include the spherical, the infinite and finite cylinder, the flat plate, and the capped sphere. High-frequency approximations of the resulting integrals, obtained by means of the saddle-point method, show the relative importance of the scattering centers located at the beam's specular reflection points, or at the edges of the spots that the beam shines on the scatterers. The physical-optics method is extended to obtain formulas for the bistatic cross sections of partially insonified objects. The results are numerically evaluated and graphically displayed in many pertinent instances and compared to the predictions of approaches, such as the Fresnel-zones method and the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD). The predictions of the physical-optics method have all the advantages and deficiencies of this method and, with very minor modifications, hold equally well for the partial illumination of objects by beams of electromagnetic radiation.  相似文献

An elastoplastic model for sands is presented in this paper, which can describe stress–strain behaviour dependent on mean effective stress level and void ratio. The main features of the proposed model are: (a) a new state parameter, which is dependent on the initial void ratio and initial mean stress, is proposed and applied to the yield function in order to predict the plastic deformation for very loose sands; and (b) another new state parameter, which is used to determine the peak strength and describe the critical state behaviour of sands during shearing, is proposed in order to predict simply negative/positive dilatancy and the hardening/softening behaviour of medium or dense sands. In addition, the proposed model can also predict the stress–strain behaviour of sands under three-dimensional stress conditions by using a transformed stress tensor instead of ordinary stress tensor. The emission lines in the spectra of some planetary nebula experience variations with the time. These variations (due to evolution effects and by their nature) differ from the spectral changes which we usually observe in stars. It appears that the long-scale and systematic observations on the intensity behaviour of different emission lines of nebula may be used as an independent indicator to receive a principally new and quite unpredicted category of information related to the physics of nebulae and their nuclei. Particularly, the analysis of long standing observations carried out in relation to the forbidden lines 4363 [Oiii] andN 1+N 2 [Oiii] of double-ionized oxygen lead to a conception about the possible existence ofrelativistic electrons of moderate energy in planetary nebulae and the generation oftransition radiation as a result of electrodynamic interaction of these electrons with the dust particles in nebula (Gurzadyan, 1991). Just on the basis of the same observational material, the long-scale periodicity in the activity or variations of a star-like planetary nebula IC 4997 is discovered about which is the present note.  相似文献

The problem of the interaction between magnetic fields and differential rotation in the radiative zone of the Sun is investigated. It is demonstrated that effects of magnetic buoyancy can be neglected in the analysis of this interaction. It is shown that hydromagnetic torsional waves propagating from the solar core cannot be responsible for the 22-year solar cycle. A possible geometry of the magnetic field that conforms with stationary differential rotation is considered. A verifying method for hypotheses on the structure of the magnetic field and torsional oscillations in the radiative zone of the Sun is proposed based on helioseismic data.  相似文献

The Siberian Solar Radio Telescope (SSRT) is one of the world's largest solar radio heliographs. It commenced operation in 1983, and since then has undergone several upgrades. The operating frequency of the SSRT is 5.7 GHz. Since 1992 the instrument has had the capability to make one-dimensional scans with a high time resolution of 56 ms and an angular resolution of 15 arc sec. Making one of these scans now takes 14 ms. In 1996 the capability was added to make full, two-dimensional images of the solar disk. The SSRT is now capable of obtaining images with an angular resolution of 21 arc sec every 2 min. In this paper we describe the main features and operation of the instrument, particularly emphasizing issues pertaining to the imaging process and factors limiting data quality. Some of the data processing and analysis techniques are discussed. We present examples of full-disk solar images of the quiet Sun, recorded near solar activity minimum, and images of specific structures: plages, coronal bright points, filaments and prominences, and coronal holes. We also present some observations of dynamic phenomena, such as eruptive prominences and solar flares, which illustrate the high-time-resolution observations that can be done with this instrument. We compare SSRT observations at 5.7 GHz, including computed `light curves', both morphologically and quantatively, with observations made in other spectral domains, such as 17 GHz radio images, Hα filtergrams and magnetograms, extreme-ultraviolet and X-ray observations, and dynamic radio spectra.  相似文献

We present warm dark matter (WDM) as a possible solution to the missing satellites and angular momentum problem in galaxy formation and introduce improved initial conditions for numerical simulations of WDM models, which avoid the formation of unphysical haloes found in earlier simulations. There is a hint, that because of that the mass function of satellite haloes has been overestimated so far, pointing to higher values for the WDM particle mass.
