Arsenic (As) and fluoride (F?) in groundwater are increasing global water quality and public health concerns. The present study provides a deeper understanding of the impact of seasonal change on the co-occurrence of As and F?, as both contaminants vary with climatic patterns. Groundwater samples were collected in pre- and post-monsoon seasons (n = 40 in each season) from the Brahmaputra flood plains (BFP) in northeast India to study the effect of season on As and F? levels. Weathering is a key hydrogeochemical process in the BFP and both silicate and carbonate weathering are enhanced in the post-monsoon season. The increase in carbonate weathering is linked to an elevation in pH during the post-monsoon season. A Piper diagram revealed that bicarbonate-type water, with Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ cations, is common in both seasons. Correlation between Cl? and NO3 ? (r = 0.74, p = 0.01) in the post-monsoon indicates mobilization of anthropogenic deposits during the rainy season. As was within the 10 µg L?1 WHO limit for drinking water and F? was under the 1.5 mg L?1 limit. A negative correlation between oxidation reduction potential and groundwater As in both seasons (r = ?0.26 and ?0.49, respectively, for pre-monsoon and post-monsoon, p = 0.05) indicates enhanced As levels due to prevailing reducing conditions. Reductive hydrolysis of Fe (hydr)oxides appears to be the predominant process of As release, consistent with a positive correlation between As and Fe in both seasons (r = 0.75 and 0.73 for pre- and post-monsoon seasons, respectively, at p = 0.01). Principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis revealed grouping of Fe and As in both seasons. F? and sulfate were also clustered during the pre-monsoon season, which could be due to their similar interactions with Fe (hydr)oxides. Higher As levels in the post-monsoon appears driven by the influx of water into the aquifer, which drives out oxygen and creates a more reducing condition suitable for reductive dissolution of Fe (hydr)oxides. An increase in pH promotes desorption of As oxyanions AsO4 3? (arsenate) and AsO3 3? (arsenite) from Fe (hydr)oxide surfaces. Fluoride appears mainly released from F?-bearing minerals, but Fe (hydr)oxides can be a secondary source of F?, as suggested by the positive correlation between As and F? in the pre-monsoon season. 相似文献

We discuss the necessary requirements to create dense electron-positron plasmas in the laboratory and the possibility of using
them to investigate certain aspects of various astrophysical phenomena, such as gamma ray burst engines. Earth-based electron-positron
plasmas are created during the interaction of ultra-intense laser pulses impinging on a solid density target. The fact that
positrons can be generated during this interaction has already been demonstrated by Cowan et al. (2000). However, several
questions concerning the number, energy, and dynamics of these positrons have yet to be answered. Through insight gathered
from PIC simulations, we postulate that the e+e− plasma leaves the creation region in dense jets, with relativistic energies. In order to estimate the number density of the
positrons created, we begin by first experimentally measuring the hot electron temperatures and densities of such interactions
using a compact electron spectrometer. Once the electron distribution is known, the positron creation rate, Γ, can be estimated.
This same experimental diagnostic can also, with minor modification, measure the energy distribution of positrons. Initial
estimates are that, with proper target and laser configurations, we could potentially create one of the densest arraignments
of positrons ever assembled on earth. This experimental configuration would only last for a few femtoseconds, but would eventually
evolve into astrophysically relevant pure electron-positron jets, possibly relevant to e+e− outflow from black holes. 相似文献

Complex factors such as climate, glacial geometry, topographical features and debris covers have significant influence on the dynamics of the Himalayan glaciers. Presence of debris covers on the surface of glaciers can significantly alter the surface energy balance and influence the climatic response of glaciers. In this study, the influence of debris covers and its impact on the ablation processes were analyzed from the in situ data collected over the surface of the Batal glacier in Chandra Basin, Western Himalaya. Almost 90 % of the ablation zone of the Batal glacier is covered by debris, 35 % of which is thick debris (>10 cm). Fourteen stakes (depth ~10 m) with increasing altitude and with varying debris thicknesses were installed to cover the whole ablation zone. Among them, four stakes represent thin debris (<2 cm), two stakes represent 2–5 cm debris thickness, two stakes represent 5–25 cm debris thickness, three stakes represent 25–50 cm debris thickness and three stakes represent >50 cm debris thickness. Our study has revealed high surface melting (?2.0 cm. w.e.d?1) in the debris free glacier while low surface melting observed in thick debris covered ice (?0.6 cm. w.e.d?1). Although limited to one season, this observation revealed a significant difference in the rate of surface melting as per the increasing debris thickness. Contrasting to normal ablation pattern over glaciers, Batal has experienced inverse retreat rate of ablation along with increasing altitude. A high degree of negative correlation (r = ?0.82, p < 0.05) between ablation rate and debris thickness in Batal suggest a significant control of debris thickness over ablation rate. 相似文献

Incidence of high fluoride (F?) in groundwater (>1.5 mg/L) in two tribal belts of eastern India, one around Chukru in the Palamau district of Jharkhand and the other around Karlakot in the Nuapada district of Odisha, has been studied. The maximum concentration of F? in groundwater from dug wells and tube wells is 10.30 mg/L in Chukru and 4.62 mg/L in Karlakot. The groundwaters are mildly alkaline with pH ranges of 7.52–8.22 and 7.33–8.20 in Chukru and Karlakot, respectively. The F? concentration is positively correlated with pH, electrical conductivity and SO4 2? in both areas. The high F? in groundwater resulted mainly from dissolution of biotite and fluorapatite in quartzofeldspathic gneiss. The ionic dominance pattern (in meq/L) is mostly in the order Ca2+ > Na+ > Mg2+ > K+ among cations and HCO3 ? > SO4 2? > < Cl? > F? among anions in the Karlakot groundwater. Preliminary adsorption experiments were conducted on natural haematite iron ore and synthetic magnetite to evaluate their potential for F? removal from water. Effects of different parameters such as contact time, pH, adsorbent dose and initial F? concentration on the adsorption capacity of these materials were investigated. Strong dependence of F? removal on pH was observed for both the adsorbents. With natural haematite iron ore, the maximum F? removal of 66 % occurred at an initial pH of 3.2 for a solution with F? concentration of 3 mg/L, adsorbent dose of 7 g/L and overnight contact time. The haematite iron ore was observed to increase the pH of the F? solution. Adsorption equilibrium was not achieved with this adsorbent even after a contact time of 45.2 h. In the case of synthetic magnetite, 84 % F? removal was achieved after 2 min of contact time for a solution with F? concentration of 6 mg/L, adsorbent dose of 10 g/L and initial pH of 7. The results indicate high potential of both natural haematite iron ore and synthetic magnetite as adsorbents of F? in water. 相似文献

Sediments of Manaveli Formation (Palaeocene) are studied from the Thondaimanattam quarry section and Manaveli section of the
Pondicherry area, which comprises of bioturbated arenaceous limestone-shale and shaly-sandstone sequences respectively. These
sediments consist of high density and low diversity trace fossil genera which includes Lanicodichnus, Ophiomorpha, Planolites, Palaeophycus, Skolithos, Thalassinoides, and Polychaetes tubes. The abundance of horizontal structures of the Thondaimanattam quarry section indicate low to moderate
wave and current energy in fully marine subtidal environments while the presences of vertical structures of the Manaveli section
indicate moderate to high wave and current energy in the marginal marine environment of deposition for the Palaeocene sediments

Cratonic areas experience complex process-response changes due to their operative endogenic and exogenic forces varying in intensity and spatiality over long timescales. Unlike zones of active deformation, the surface expression of the transient signals in relatively tectonically stable areas are usually scant. The Subarnarekha River Basin, in eastern India, is a prime example of a Precambrian cratonic landscape, overlain in places by Tertiary and Quaternary deposits. A coupled quantitative-qualitative approach is employed towards deciphering tectonic and geological influences across linear and areal aspects, at the basin and sub-basin scale. Within this landscape, the transient erosional signatures are explored, as recorded in the disequilibrium conditions of the longitudinal profiles of the major streams, which are marked by a number of waterfalls at structural and lithological boundaries. Mathematical expressions derived from the normalized longitudinal profiles of these streams are used to ascertain their stage of development. Cluster analysis and chi plots provide significant interpretations of the role of vertical displacements or litho-structural variations within the basin. These analyses suggest that a heterogeneous, piece-meal response to the ongoing deformation exists in the area, albeit, determining the actual rate of this deformation or its temporal variation is difficult without correlated chronological datasets. 相似文献

Microwave sensors having all-weather capabilities provide an opportunity to monitor rice grown in monsoon season. An attempt has been made to identify rice crop using multitemporal ERS-1 SAR data in C-band (5.3 GHz). Data acquired on August 15 (D1), September 19 (D2), October 24 (D3) and November 28 (D4) 1993 were taken. Combinations of data acquired on different dates were used for identification of rice crop. Single-date IRS-1B LISS II data in visible and NIR bands acquired on October 23, 1993 was also used for comparison of estimated rice area. Analysis of the results has shown that a combination of SAR data acquired at the tillering (August), booting (September) and heading (October) stages of rice crop enabled identification and area estimation of rice crop grown under lowland conditions. Single-date SAR data acquired in the month of October was found to be better for identification of rice compared to other dates. 相似文献

Many different methods are used to disaggregate census data and predict population densities to construct finer scale, gridded population data sets. These methods often involve a range of high resolution geospatial covariate datasets on aspects such as urban areas, infrastructure, land cover and topography; such covariates, however, are not directly indicative of the presence of people. Here we tested the potential of geo‐located tweets from the social media application, Twitter, as a covariate in the production of population maps. The density of geo‐located tweets in 1x1 km grid cells over a 2‐month period across Indonesia, a country with one of the highest Twitter usage rates in the world, was input as a covariate into a previously published random forests‐based census disaggregation method. Comparison of internal measures of accuracy and external assessments between models built with and without the geotweets showed that increases in population mapping accuracy could be obtained using the geotweet densities as a covariate layer. The work highlights the potential for such social media‐derived data in improving our understanding of population distributions and offers promise for more dynamic mapping with such data being continually produced and freely available. 相似文献

A study was conducted in the Bathinda district of Punjab state for mapping the cropping pattern and crop rotation, monitoring
long term changes in cropping pattern by using the satellite based remote sensing data along other spatial and non-spatial
collateral data. Multi-date IRS LISS I and IRS WiFS sensor data have been used for this study. Cropping pattern maps and crop
rotation maps were generated for the years 1988-89 and 1998-99. The present study has shown the increase of cropping intensity
significantly, mainly due to increase in rice area. However, crop diversity has decreased mainly due to decline in the area
under the minor crops like pearl millet, gram, rapeseed/ mustard. There is increase in area coverage of cotton-wheat and rice-wheat
