We describe an investigation into the reactivity of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), produced from marine algae, to conventional persulphate and ultraviolet (UV) oxidation methods. Marine algae were grown in batch culture in the presence of 14C bicarbonate and filtered samples of the phytoplankton dissolved organic carbon (PDOC) were oxidized with persulphate and UV techniques. The amount of fixed label found in solution after the oxidation procedures was compared with the initial amount of labelled DOC. Marine algae examined in this way included: the diatoms, Chaetoceros gracilis, Skeletonema costatum, Phaeodactylum tricornutum; the flagellate, Isochrysis galbana; and the cyanobacterium, Synechococcus strain DC2. It was found that 5–18% of the DOC produced by these phytoplankton resisted persulphate oxidation. Samples were also measured for their resistance to UV oxidation by an autoanalyzer method. It was found that 15–27% of these samples resisted UV oxidation. However, 95% of PDOC was oxidized after exposure for 6 h to high intensity UV irradiation using a variable exposure time system. P. tricornutum and Synechococcus PDOC samples were ultrafiltered into low molecular weight (< 10 000 Da) and colloidal (> 10 000 Da) size fractions. Both species produced mainly (> 68%) low molecular weight material. Slightly greater resistance to persulphate oxidation was generally found for the colloidal Synechococcus PDOC (15–22%) than for the low molecular weight material (14–17%). However, the opposite was found for the P. tricornutum PDOC which generally showed less resistance for the colloidal fraction (5–12%) than for the low molecular weight fraction (10–15%).Experiments were also conducted to determine the effects of short-term (days) and long-term (months) ageing of PDOC solutions in the presence of microbial populations from coastal seawater. Long-term ageing decreased the amount of PDOC that resisted oxidation in all cases. However, the fraction of PDOC resisting persulphate oxidation increased by small amounts over a short-term experiment. Increased resistance was attributed to preferential degradation of biologically and chemically labile components of PDOC by bacteria.The percentages of phytoplankton-produced (and microbially aged) DOC found in this study to resist UV or persulphate oxidation were low (5–27%), compared with those values (50–65%) reported for DOC in surface seawater on the basis of recent high temperature catalytic oxidation analyses.  相似文献

Increased oceanic heat transport has often been cited as a means of maintaining warm high-latitude surface temperatures in many intervals of the geologic past, including the early Eocene. Although the excess amount of oceanic heat transport required by warm high latitude sea surface temperatures can be calculated empirically, determining how additional oceanic heat transport would take place has yet to be accomplished. That the mechanisms of enhanced poleward oceanic heat transport remain undefined in paleoclimate reconstructions is an important point that is often overlooked. Using early Eocene climate as an example, we consider various ways to produce enhanced poleward heat transport and latitudinal energy redistribution of the sign and magnitude required by interpreted early Eocene conditions. Our interpolation of early Eocene paleotemperature data indicate that an approximately 30% increase in poleward heat transport would be required to maintain Eocene high-latitude temperatures. This increased heat transport appears difficult to accomplish by any means of ocean circulation if we use present ocean circulation characteristics to evaluate early Eocene rates. Either oceanic processes were very different from those of the present to produce the early Eocene climate conditions or oceanic heat transport was not the primary cause of that climate. We believe that atmospheric processes, with contributions from other factors, such as clouds, were the most likely primary cause of early Eocene climate.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the adaptability of marine mussels Mytilus edulis of increasing age to induced stress and subsequent recovery. Lysosomes, present in large numbers in the molluscan digestive gland, play a major role in intracellular digestion, and the stability of their membranes provides a sensitive biomarker for generalised cell injury which is correlated with the stress response of the whole animal. Lysosomal stability was measured in mussels of three age groups (2–4, 6–8 and ≥ 10 years) during exposure to hypoxia/hyperthermia and, in a separate experiment, to copper (50 ppb: where billion = 109). The lysosomal reactions of all three age groups to both experimental stressors were similar. However, recovery from the induced pathological reactions was most pronounced in the youngest animals and least apparent in the oldest group. These findings indicate that the stress reaction is independent of age but that the potential for recovery of lysosomal integrity is age-related.  相似文献

On eruption, the tholeiitic basalt lava of the prehistoric Makaopuhi lake contained nearly seven percent euhedral olivine phenocrysts of approximately Fa14 composition. In the center of the 225 foot vertical section of the lake, the lava became more than 90 percent solid at 1000° C after about 30 years. At the surface the lava was quenched to air temperature, whereas, at the bottom, quenching to 800° C was followed by a 40 year period before the temperature reached 700° C. The olivine phenocrysts settled at an average rate of about 4 × 10–6 cm Sec–1 to form a zone that contains 21 percent olivine 75 feet above the base. Sinking of olivines continued until some time after the beginning of the crystallization of augite and plagioclase. Thin rims of iron-rich olivine (up to Fa55) surrounding the phenocrysts, and a second generation of fine-grained olivines (Fa20 Fa48) restricted to the uppermost 20 feet indicate local extensions of the period of crystallization of olivine. During crystallization of the groundmass and later subsolidus cooling in the range 1000° C to at least as low as 800° C, the olivine phenocrysts were converted to Fa30–40 by interdiffusion of Fe, Mg, Ni, and Mn. Homogenization of Mg-rich cores and Fe-rich margins and equilibration of olivine composition with the groundmass phases was progressively less well achieved toward the top of the lake. Reaction rims around the olivines are composed primarily of Ca-rich pyroxene. Pigeonite crystallized alongside augite except in the uppermost 5 feet where there is abundant ground mass olivine. Poikilitic hypersthene grew at the expense of pre-existing ferromagnesian minerals in the cumulate zone.Publication authorized by the Director, U.S. Geological Survey.  相似文献

This paper presents a detailed zooarchaeological study of fish remains from the site of Kala Uyuni, Bolivia. The fish remains of 31 flotation samples from different archaeological contexts and dated to the Formative Period (1000 BC–AD 400) are described in terms of frequency, weight, taxa distribution, sizes, skeletal representations, and exposure to heat. The results confirm the importance of fish in the diet of the inhabitants of the site and provide insights about the particularities of their exploitation, consumption, and differential discard across the site throughout time. A strong decline in the procurement and consumption of fish is observed for the Late Formative which seems to be a consequence of both environmental and social processes.  相似文献

We examine observational evidence concerning energy release in solar flares. We propose that different processes may be operative on four different time scales: (a) on the sub-second time scale of sub-bursts which are a prominent feature of mm-wave microwave records; (b) on the few-seconds time scale of elementary bursts which are a prominent feature of hard X-ray records; (c) on the few-minutes time scale of the impulsive phase; and (d) on the tens-of-minutes or longer time scale of the gradual phase.We propose that the concentration of magnetic field into magnetic knots at the photosphere has important consequences for the coronal magnetic-field structure such that the magnetic field in this region may be viewed as an array of elementary flux tubes. The release of the free energy of one such tube may produce an elementary burst. The development of magnetic islands during this process may be responsible for the sub-bursts. The impulsive phase may be simply the composite effect of many elementary bursts.We propose that the gradual phase of energy release, with which flares typically begin and with which many flares end, involves a steady process of reconnection, whereas the impulsive phase involves a more rapid stochastic process of reconnection which is a consequence of mode interaction.In the case of two-ribbon flares, the late part of the gradual phase may be attributed to reconnection of a large current sheet which is being produced as a result of filament eruption. Biodiversity estimations, particularly in vulnerable tropical regions, are essential to understanding ecosystem structure, function and conservation. While threats to marine and terrestrial ecosystems have fueled increased interest in biodiversity research, information on meiofauna, a key trophic and ecologic community of microscopic organisms that lives within sediments, is still lacking. Here we report the results of a faunistic investigation conducted in Bali, Indonesia. The results reveal that the biodiversity of marine meiofauna in Bali is very high. Meiofauna from coral reefs, sand flats and seagrass beds differed significantly in abundance and diversity. Nonetheless, overall community compositions show that meiofauna communities are affected by environmental variables. The high meiofaunal diversity observed in Bali, a low diversity region of the Coral Triangle, indicates the importance of further meiofaunal research across this region and across a broader diversity of habitats. The data presented provide an important baseline for future studies on biodiversity conservation in the face of environmental changes due to anthropogenic impacts and/or natural events.  相似文献

Brush removal is widely practiced as a tool for increasing groundwater recharge, but its efficacy depends greatly on the way in which the removed species interact with the hydrological system relative to the vegetation replacing it. We examined the effects of Ashe juniper removal in the recharge zone of the Edwards Aquifer, Texas, USA, a karst aquifer. The study was conducted in an Ashe juniper (Juniperus ashei)–live oak (Quercus fusiformis) woodland on a hill slope composed of rocky, shallow soils over fractured limestone bedrock. Ashe juniper is a native species that has been encroaching grasslands and savannas over the past century. In September 2008, a plot was cleared of 90% of its juniper trees. Tree transpiration, predawn water potentials and vegetation cover across the cleared plot and an adjacent reference site were measured from May 2009 to December 2011. Stand‐level tree transpiration from May 2009 to March 2010 was diminished by a severe summer drought in 2009, from which trees were slow to recover. Subsequently, tree transpiration was 5–10× higher in the woodland compared to the clearing. For all of 2011, also a drought year, tree transpiration in the woodland exceeded precipitation inputs, indicating a high capacity for water storage at the study site. However, site differences for oak trees were generally larger than for juniper trees. While juniper removal accounted for a 431 mm year?1 difference in tree transpiration between sites, vegetation cover in the clearing increased from 42% to 90% over two years, suggesting that understory growth was increasingly compensating for the loss of juniper transpiration. We conclude that the removal of a relatively shallow‐rooted tree, when replaced with herbaceous vegetation and low shrubs, has little effect on deep recharge. By contrast, successive years of precipitation extremes may be more effective increasing recharge by lowering the water transport capacity of trees in the aftermath of severe drought. Over the past 35 years, the Upper Penticton Creek (UPC) Watershed Experiment has supported forest hydrology research in south-central British Columbia (BC), Canada. This paper provides a synthesis of research results, highlights the challenges facing UPC and identifies new research directions. Clearcutting approximately 50% of two small, snow-dominated (Dfb Koppen classification) watersheds advanced the timing of snowmelt-generated high flows and decreased late-summer low flows, relative to predictions based on pre-treatment regressions. Changes in high flows did not have a significant effect on stream channels due to low stream power, coarse substrate, and limited riparian disturbance. Changes in summer low flows reduced modelled useable fish habitat by 20%–50%. Evaporation averaged 52% of the annual precipitation in the mature forest, was reduced to 30% in a clearcut, and recovered to 40% and 47% in a 10 and 25 year-old stand, respectively. Groundwater recharge to the bedrock was estimated at 19% of annual precipitation, indicating that, even with the large uncertainty associated with this estimate, deep groundwater should not be ignored in the water balance. Suspended sediment, turbidity, and colour increased post-logging; however, chemical surface water quality did not change. Aquatic community structure changed post-logging; and although this affected the processing of organic matter, the effects on habitat quality were considered minimal. The information gained at UPC has supported provincial policies, management guidelines, forest stewardship plans and watershed risk assessments. The undisturbed control watershed, re-growing treatment watersheds and ongoing long-term hydrometric monitoring continue to provide opportunities for future research addressing issues such as the effects of young forests on streamflow and hydrologic recovery, and the influence of climate change on the hydrologic regime.  相似文献
