In September 1979, the radar scattering coefficient (sigmadeg) was measured at platform Noordwijk in the North Sea 10 km off the Dutch coast. This was done in conjunction with similar measurements by Dutch and French investigators as part of Project MARSEN (Marine Remote Sensing). Our measurements were made with vertical and horizontal polarizations, in the frequency baud 9-17 GHz, at incidence angles0deg - 70deg, with wind speeds from 2-22 m/s, and look directions upwind, downwind, and crosswind. This paper presents the scattering-coefficient variation with these radar and ocean parameters. In particular, the exponents for the windspeed response are compared with those from other investigators. Some of the exponents reported here are higher than reported previously, possibly because orthogonal regression was used rather than regression ofsigmadegversus windspeed.  相似文献

226Ra and 228Ra have non-conservative excess concentrations in the mixing zones of the Pee Dee River-Winyah Bay estuary, the Yangtze River estuary, and the Delaware Bay estuary. Laboratory experiments, using Pee Dee River sediment, indicate desorption of 226Ra to increase with increasing salinities up to 20‰. In Winyah Bay desorption from river-borne sediments could contribute almost all of the increases for both isotopes. Desorption adds only a portion of the excess 228Ra measured in the Yangtse River and adjacent Shelf waters and Delaware Bay. In the Yangtze River the mixing zone extends over a considerable portion of the Continental Shelf where 228Ra is added to the water column by diffusion from bottom sediments, while 226Ra concentrations decrease from dilution. Diffusion of 228Ra from bottom sediments in Delaware Bay primarily occurs in the upper part of the bay (< 22‰ water) where fine grained sediments predominate. A diffusive flux for 228Ra of 0·33 dpm cm?2 year was determined for Delaware Bay.  相似文献

From a review of the observed properties of umbral flashes and running penumbral waves it is proposed that the source of these periodic phenomena is the oscillatory convection which Danielson and Savage (1968) and Savage (1969) ave shown is likely to occur in the superadiabatic subphotospheric layers of sunspot umbras. Periods and growth rates are computed for oscillatory modes arising in a simple two-layer model umbra. The results suggest that umbral flashes result from disturbances produced by oscillatory convection occurring in the upper subphotospheric layer of the umbra where the superadiabatic temperature gradient is much enhanced over that in lower layers, while running penumbral waves are due to oscillations in a layer just below this upper layer.  相似文献

This paper examines changes in carbon (C) pools associated with land-use, synthesizing data from two experiments dealing with different aspects of tree plantation establishment in Central Panamá. First, we analysed soil profiles in a grazed pasture and an adjacent 5-year-old teak (Tectona grandis) plantation. There were small differences in soil C mass in the top 10 cm of the pasture and the plantation, though analysis of paired profiles suggested larger differences at greater depth. Analysis of the 13C signatures in the pasture soils and litter showed that 90% to 95% of the organic matter in the surface 5 cm was derived from C4 pasture plants, over the 45 years since the pasture was converted from forest. Comparison of the 13C signatures in the pasture and teak plantation profiles indicated substantial replacement of C4—derived organic matter with the dominantly C3—derived plantation tissues. Organic matter turnover times in the upper 10 cm of the soils ranged from 8 to 34 years and from 11 to 58 years in the upper 30 cm, depending on topographic location. We also present preliminary results, and technical challenges, for an eddy covariance experiment set up to provide a direct comparison between a grazed pasture and a native tree plantation. The two ecosystems studied are estimated to be small CO2 sinks, 92 g,C,m–2 yr–1 for the pasture, and 57 g,C,m–2 yr–1 for native species plantation in the first year after establishment. The pastures response to seasonal change was more pronounced, both in term of CO2 fluxes and in term of herbaceous productivity, than the plantations response. The storage below ground systems contained up 40% of the total sapling biomass.  相似文献

Total carbon and nitrogen contents are reported for four howardites, three enstatite achondrites and one hypersthene achondrite. The mean value for eucrites is 650 ppm C and howardites 1440 ppm C. The Haraiya eucrite has an anomalously high carbon content The nitrogen contents range between 24 and 66 ppm N. The mean N value for eucrites is 36 ppm N and for the howardites 51 ppm N.  相似文献

The activity of 227Ac in seawater was determined using a delayed coincidence counting technique based on the measurement of the short-lived daughter 223Ra (half-life of 11 days). Two 180-l aliquots of Ac free seawater from surface waters of the California borderlands were spiked with Harwell Uraninite standard and the added Ac and Ra were extracted on Mn-fibers. The measured activities on the fibers agreed to within 5% of the equilibrium Ac activity of the spike addition, well within the 2σ counting error of 7% for the measurements. Thus, any recovery error was indistinguishable from counting error. Large volume samples were collected from the water column of the Eastern North Pacific in December of 1998 and processed through Mn-fiber columns. The 223Ra activities on the fibers were measured four or more times over a period of 2 months by the technique of [J. Geophys. Res. 101 (1996) 1321] to determine if the activity of 223Ra was wholly supported by 227Ac. In most cases, no significant differences in 223Ra activity were observed during repeated counting of the same sample, again implying that 223Ra was supported wholly by 227Ac. In samples where unsupported 223Ra were present, samples were counted beyond five half live of the 223Ra (>60 days). Two depth profiles of 227Ac in the Eastern North Pacific showed similar shape and activity to profiles in the Western and Central Pacific measured with alpha-spectrometry by [Nature 310 (1984) 486). Surface waters of the Southern Ocean were relatively enriched in 227Ac compared to Eastern North Pacific waters, possibly indicating export of the parent 231Pa from Atlantic surface waters or upwelling.  相似文献

Winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus) from Boston Harbor, Massachusett, undergo a progressive series of hepatic changes involving hydropic vacuolation of epithelial cells, biliary hyperplasia, and hepatocellular and cholangiocellular neoplasia. Severely affected fish often exhibit grossly visible lesions. To examine cell proliferation associated with these conditions, evidence for DNA synthesis was sought. Boston winter flounder livers were screened endoscopically to select fish with and without grossly visible hepatic lesions, and then injected intraperitoneally with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) 3 h before euthanasia. Incorporation of this nucleotide analog was visualized immunohistochemically in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. Basal epithelia in the gill and intestine stained strongly, as did renal hemopoietic epithelia. In contrast, renal tubular epithelia and cardiomyocytes did not stain. Normal appearing hepatocytes stained occasionally, whilst more frequent staining was observed in vacuolated and neoplastic hepatic epithelia. We conclude (1) that the BrdU assay as described here has potentially widespread application to the study of cell proliferation in fish tissues; (2) that vacuolated cells may actively proliferate in winter flounder liver from Boston Harbor; and (3) vacuolated cells may be involved in the neoplastic transformation of hepatic epithelia.  相似文献
