Moore (1983) presented a theory of resonance with two degrees of freedom based on the Bohlin-von Zeipel procedure. This procedure is now applied to librational motion with all constants re-evaluated in terms of values of the momenta given either by the initial conditions, or, in the case of the momentumy 1 conjugate to the critical argument x1, by its value at the libration centre. Numerical results are presented for a resonant satellite in a near 12 hr orbit and for a geosynchronous satellite. The theory is further developed to include near-circular orbits by recasting the problem in terms of the Poincaré eccentric variables.  相似文献

Headless submarine canyons with steep headwalls and shallowly sloping floors occur on both the second and third landward vergent anticlines on the toe of the Cascadia accretionary complex off central Oregon (45 °N, 125° 30′W). In September 1993, we carried out a series of nine deep tow camera sled runs and nine ALVIN dives to examine the relationship between fluid venting, structure and canyon formation. We studied four canyons on the second and third landward vergent anticlines, as well as the apparently unfailed intercanyon regions along strike. All evidence of fluid expulsion is associated with the canyons; we found no evidence of fluid flow between canyons. Even though all fluid seeps are related to canyons, we did not find seeps in all canyons, and the location of the seeps within the canyons differed. On the landward facing limb of the second landward vergent anticline a robust cold seep community occurs at the canyon’s inflection point. This seep is characterized by chemosynthetic vent clams, tube worms and extensive authigenic carbonate. Fluids for this seep may utilize high-permeability flow paths either parallel to bedding within the second thrust ridge or along the underlying thrust fault before leaking into the overriding section. Two seaward facing canyons on the third anticlinal ridge have vent clam communities near the canyon mouths at approximately the intersection between the anticlinal ridge and the adjacent forearc basin. No seeps were found along strike at the intersection of the slope basin and anticlinal ridge. We infer that the lack of seepage along strike and the presence of seeps in canyons may be related to fluid flow below the forearc basin/slope unconformity (overpressured by the impinging thrust fault to the west?) directed toward canyons at the surface.  相似文献

Abstract Multi- and single-channel seismic profiles are used to investigate the structural evolution of back-arc rifting in the intra-oceanic Izu-Bonin Arc. Hachijo and Aoga Shima Rifts, located west of the Izu-Bonin frontal arc, are bounded along-strike by structural and volcanic highs west of Kurose Hole, North Aoga Shima Caldera and Myojin Sho arc volcanoes. Zig-zag and curvilinear faults subdivide the rifts longitudinally into an arc margin (AM), inner rift, outer rift and proto-remnant arc margin (PRA). Hachijo Rift is 65 km long and 20–40 km wide. Aoga Shima Rift is 70 km long and up to 45 km wide. Large-offset border fault zones, with convex and concave dip slopes and uplifted rift flanks, occur along the east (AM) side of the Hachijo Rift and along the west (PRA) side of the Aoga Shima Rift. No cross-rift structures are observed at the transfer zone between these two regions; differential strain may be accommodated by interdigitating rift-parallel faults rather than by strike- or oblique-slip faults. In the Aoga Shima Rift, a 12 km long flank uplift, facing the flank uplift of the PRA, extends northeast from beneath the Myojin Knoll Caldera. Fore-arc sedimentary sequences onlap this uplift creating an unconformity that constrains rift onset to ~1-2Ma. Estimates of extension (~3km) and inferred age suggest that these rifts are in the early syn-rift stage of back-arc formation. A two-stage evolution of early back-arc structural evolution is proposed: initially, half-graben form with synthetically faulted, structural rollovers (ramping side of the half-graben) dipping towards zig-zagging large-offset border fault zones. The half-graben asymmetry alternates sides along-strike. The present ‘full-graben’ stage is dominated by rift-parallel hanging wall collapse and by antithetic faulting that concentrates subsidence in an inner rift. Structurally controlled back-arc magmatism occurs within the rift and PRA during both stages. Significant complications to this simple model occur in the Aoga Shima Rift where the east-dipping half-graben dips away from the flank uplift along the PRA. A linear zone of weakness caused by the greater temperatures and crustal thickness along the arc volcanic line controls the initial locus of rifting. Rifts are better developed between the arc edifices; intrusions may be accommodating extensional strain adjacent to the arc volcanoes. Pre-existing structures have little influence on rift evolution; the rifts cut across large structural and volcanic highs west of the North Aoga Shima Caldera and Aoga Shima. Large, rift-elongate volcanic ridges, usually extruded within the most extended inner rift between arc volcanoes, may be the precursors of sea floor spreading. As extension continues, the fissure ridges may become spreading cells and propagate toward the ends of the rifts (adjacent to the arc volcanoes), eventually coalescing with those in adjacent rift basins to form a continuous spreading centre. Analysis of the rift fault patterns suggests an extension direction of N80°E ± 10° that is orthogonal to the trend of the active volcanic arc (N10°W). The zig-zag pattern of border faults may indicate orthorhombic fault formation in response to this extension. Elongation of arc volcanic constructs may also be developed along one set of the possible orthorhombic orientations. Border fault formation may modify the regional stress field locally within the rift basin resulting in the formation of rift-parallel faults and emplacement of rift-parallel volcanic ridges. The border faults dip 45–55° near the surface and the majority of the basin subsidence is accommodated by only a few of these faults. Distinct border fault reflections decreases dips to only 30° at 2.5 km below the sea floor (possibly flattening to near horizontal at 2.8 km although the overlying rollover geometry shows a deeper detachment) suggesting that these rifting structures may be detached at extremely shallow crustal levels.  相似文献

A marine sampling program, utilizing the PISCES-5 submersible operated by the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (NOAA), has confirmed the presence of a major submerged coral reef offshore from Ka Lae (South Point), Hawaii. The top of the reef is now 150–160 m below sea level. Radiocarbon and Useries dating indicates that it drowned about 13.9 ka by the combined effects of island subsidence (2.5 mm/year) and the rapid rise of sea level at the end of the last glaciation so that the relative submergence rate of more than 10 mm/year exceeded the upward growth rate of the reef. The submerged reef caps the offshore part of the southwest rift-zone ridge of Mauna Loa, which has apparently undergone little volcanic activity offshore since 170 ka, and possibly since 270 ka. This fact suggests that rift zone activity is becoming increasingly restricted toward the upper part of the volcano, a condition possibly heralding the end of the shield-building stage.  相似文献

Recent investigations of magnetospheric plasma structure are summarized under the broad categories of empirical models, transport across boundaries, formation, and dynamics of the plasma sheet. This report reviews work in these areas during the period 1991 to 1993. Fully three-dimensional empirical models and simulations have become important contributors to our understanding of the magnetospheric system. Some new structural concepts have appeared in the literature: the entry boundary and geopause, the plasma sheet region 1 vortices, the low-energy layer, the adiabaticity boundary or wall region, and a region in the tail to which we refer as the injection port. Traditional structural concepts have also been the subject of recent study, notably the plasmapause, the magnetopause, and the plasma sheet. Significant progress has been made in understanding the nature of plasma sheet formation and dynamics, but the acceleration of electrons to high energy remains somewhat mysterious.  相似文献

We present H and coronal X-ray images of the large two-ribbon flare of 25–26 June, 1992 during its long-lasting gradual decay phase. From these observations we deduce that the 3-D magnetic field configuration late in this flare was similar to that at and before the onset of such large eruptive bipolar flares: the sheared core field running under and out of the flare arcade was S-shaped, and at least one elbow of the S looped into the low corona. From previous observations of filament-eruption flares, we infer that such core-field coronal elbows, though rarely observed, are probably a common feature of the 3-D magnetic field configuration late in large two-ribbon flares. The rare circumstance that apparently resulted in a coronal elbow of the core field being visible in H in our flare was the occurrence of a series of subflares low in the core field under the late-phase arcade of the large flare; these subflares probably produced flaring arches in the northern coronal elbow, thereby rendering this elbow visible in H. The observed late-phase 3-D field configuration presented here, together with the recent sheared-core bipolar magnetic field model of Antiochos, Dahlburg, and Klimchuk (1994) and recent Yohkoh SXT observations of the coronal magnetic field configuration at and before the onset of large eruptive bipolar flares, supports the seminal 3-D model for eruptive two-ribbon flares proposed by Hirayama (1974), with three modifications: (1) the preflare magnetic field is closed over the filament-holding core field; (2) the preflare core field has the shape of an S (or backward S) with coronal elbows; (3) a lower part of the core field does not erupt and open, but remains closed throughout flare, and can have prominent coronal elbows. In this picture, the rest of the core field, the upper part, does erupt and open along with the preflare arcade envelope field in which it rides; the flare arcade is formed by reconnection that begins in the middle of the core field at the start of the eruption and progresses from reconnecting closed core field early in the flare to reconnecting opened envelope field late in the flare.  相似文献

Ethno‐territoriality is an increasingly invoked term by those doing research on nationalism and ethnic conflict. Despite this, it has not been subject to detailed definitional and conceptual examination. This article develops a conceptual framework for thinking about ethno‐territoriality and ethnic conflict. It begins by briefly describing the relationship between territoriality, state sovereignty, and nationalist politics. I then provide a definition of ethno‐territoriality and outline a four‐part typology of the key elements of ethno‐territorial practice. Following this I discuss the role that ethno‐territoriality plays in the making of ethnic conflict.  相似文献
