A study of the elastic-plastic collapse behaviour of long, cylindrical tubes subjected to combined bending and pressure load is presented.Besides the plastic properties of the tube material, the non-linearities accounted for in the analysis cover the Brazier effect and the influence of geometrical imperfections. The imperfections considered are given either by initial ovalization of the tube cross-section or in terms of initial, short-wave axial buckles. Related to ocean pipe laying, i.e. for thick-walled tubes under combined bending and external pressure load, initial ovalization proves to be by far the more severe type of imperfection. 相似文献
Abstract We examine the response of stably stratified airflow to a slab‐symmetric diabatic forcing associated with condensation in long‐lasting precipitation bands. The steady‐state linearized Boussinesq equations are used to model the diagnostic relationship between the vertical motion field, the heating source and the ambient flow. The basic‐state flow is assumed to be horizontally uniform and non‐rotating, but the static stability and wind vary in the vertical. Linear theory shows that the speed of the along‐band wind component is unimportant for slab‐symmetric heating since it cannot contribute towards the advection of buoyancy or vertical motion. For typical atmospheric stratification and a moving heating source associated with a cloud band, the Taylor‐Goldstein equation is solved numerically. The numerical results show that the cross‐band wind shear tilts the updraft core and broadens it. While the magnitude of the shear is increased, the circulation becomes stronger. The details of the wind profile are also important in determining the intensity and structure of the circulation. When the wind profile indicates a convex bulge (i.e. the low‐level shear is weaker than the upper‐level shear), the circulation becomes slightly weaker in comparison with the linear wind profile. Conversely, the circulation becomes stronger when the wind profile has a concave shape. Increasing the concave bulge tends to enhance the circulation but not in a monotonic fashion. This non‐monotonic relation between the vertical motion and the parabolic wind profile is interpreted in terms of kinetic energy changes of parcels that interchange their altitudes. 相似文献
The state-of-the-art monitoring of drinking water hygiene is based on the cultivation and enumeration of indicator bacteria. Despite its proven reliability, this approach has the disadvantages of being (a) relatively slow and (b) limited to a small number of indicator bacteria. Ideally, alternative methods would be less time-consuming while providing information about a larger set of hygienically relevant microorganisms including viruses. In this paper, we present insights into the design of a modular concentration and detection system for bacteria, bacteriophages and viruses. Following further validation, this or similar techniques have the potential to extend and speed up the monitoring of raw and drinking water hygiene in the future. The system consists of different modules for the concentration of microorganisms, an amplification and detection unit that includes a module for the differentiation between live and dead microorganisms, and an automated system for decision support and self-diagnosis. The ongoing testing under controlled laboratory conditions and real-life conditions in the water supply industry yields further system improvements. Moreover, the increased sensitivity and broader range of microbiological parameters emphasize the need for a reconsideration of the currently used criteria for the assessment of (drinking) water hygiene. 相似文献
We retrieved a lake sediment record from an oligosaline, meromictic lake in southwest Greenland. The record spans the last
8,200 cal. years and was radiocarbon dated and analysed for macroscopic remains of plants and animals. The record extends
the known history of several invertebrate species back in time, and provides minimum ages for their immigration to Greenland
after the last deglaciation. Shells of the ostracod Ilyocypris bradyi were found in sediments dated to the time interval c. 7,000–6,500 cal. years BP. Shells of this species were found previously in a nearby oligosaline lake, where its occurrence
was dated to about the same short time interval. The species is a thermophilous, non-arctic taxon that is absent from the
present day Greenland fauna, and we suggest that its former occurrence in west Greenland marks the peak of the Holocene thermal
maximum. This is in agreement with other records from Greenland. 相似文献
In geodynamic models describing basin formation by stretching, the base of the lithosphere is commonly defined by a fixed temperature. An alternative definition is proposed where the base of the lithosphere is determined by the solidus of mantle rocks. Some consequences of this definition are illustrated in a one-dimensional model. The model applies the finite-difference method and approximates the temperature regime in the upper 400 km of the Earth. The model uses temperature-dependent thermal conductivity and includes effects from heat storage by partial melting in the mantle low-velocity layer (MLV). Radiative heat transfer contributes significantly at elevated temperatures giving rise to a steepening of the thermal gradient below the lithosphere. This change in gradient allows the perturbed geotherm to exceed the mantle solidus in a limited depth interval, which accounts for the MLV, and thus defines the base of the lithosphere.
In the model, variations in thickness of, and degree of partial melting in the MLV, results from thinning of the overlying lithospheric plate. Thus, the thickness of the MLV is roughly inversely proportional to the thickness of the lithosphere, whereas the base of the MLV is almost flat.
Temperature-dependent variations in the carrying capacity of the MLV, where the main isostatic compensation occurs, is proposed as an epeirogenetic agent. This effect may be significant, and is expressed as an enhancement of the initial subsidence if no preexisting MLV is available. A secondary effect occurs as solidification of the MLV ceases a long time (˜ 300 Ma) after stretching, and causes slow uplift. 相似文献
Despite the noisy character of the data in the new North American levelling net (Zilkoski et al. 1989) it is quite easy to see the refraction corrections mirrored in the polygon closing errors if one takes only those polygons with sufficiently high refraction corrections. The following table illustrates this point. In the table the first column denotes the limit of the accumulated refraction corrections (found from temperature measurements) along a polygon, that is only polygons where the refraction correction exceeds this limit participate in the analysis. The second column is the estimate of the correlation coefficient between refraction corrections and the closing errors of the polygons while the third column is the significance level in the conventional student-test of whetherr is different from zero. 相似文献
In October 1990 an automatic meteorological station was established at the Arctic Station (69°15'N, 53°31'W), Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn), Central West Greenland, The station register parameters each 20 min, and the parameters have been described in an earlier paper in this journal by Nielsen et al. (1995). The present paper summarises main points of the climate during 1995. Concentrational agriculture, defined as types of agriculture based on local concentration of plant nutrients, encompasses two main types: shifting cultivation and infield-outfield systems. They may ecologically be characterised by their mode of concentration: either by a vertical or a horisontal transfer (‘pumping’) of nutrients, respectively. The use of the general term ‘concentrational agriculture’ for the two forms is advocated by demonstrating that functional substitution of one by the other is possible, and by showing that the one type theoretically can be derived from the other. The seed-like larval cases of hydroptilid caddis flies may be mistaken for plant remains in subfossil studies. However, being correctly identified, they may be important for the interpretation of former freshwater environments.
