This review responds to Richard Peet's ‘policy regimes’ account of New Zealand's neoliberal experiment published in this volume of the New Zealand Geographer. It welcomes Peet's intervention, especially its comparative approach and its political economy focus, but suggests further insight may have been gained from closer engagement with the work of New Zealand geographers. The review argues that Peet misses opportunities to learn from the New Zealand case. The review subjects a ‘northern’ account of southern experience to a critique by ‘splitting’, a characteristically southern approach to analysing social change from the Antipodes that pays close attention to the situatedness of knowledge production. 相似文献

Spectral line profiles of Si ii and Si iii are presented which were observed both at solar center and near the quiet solar limb with the Naval Research Laboratory EUV spectrograph of ATM/SKYLAB. Absolute intensities and line profiles are derived from the photographic data. A brief discussion is given of their center-to-limb variations and of the optical thickness of the chromosphere in these lines. Predictors of seismic structural demands (such as inter‐storey drift angles) that are less time‐consuming than nonlinear dynamic analysis have proven useful for structural performance assessment and for design. Luco and Cornell previously proposed a simple predictor that extends the idea of modal superposition (of the first two modes) with the square‐root‐of‐sum‐of‐squares (SRSS) rule by taking a first‐mode inelastic spectral displacement into account. This predictor achieved a significant improvement over simply using the response of an elastic oscillator; however, it cannot capture well large displacements caused by local yielding. A possible improvement of Luco's predictor is discussed in this paper, where it is proposed to consider three enhancements: (i) a post‐elastic first‐mode shape approximated by the deflected shape from a nonlinear static pushover analysis (NSPA) at the step corresponding to the maximum drift of an equivalent inelastic single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDOF) system, (ii) a trilinear backbone curve for the SDOF system, and (iii) the elastic third‐mode response for long‐period buildings. The Dabieshan and its geological counterpart in the Sulu area represent the eastern part of the Qinling-Dabie orogenic belt in Eastern China. The origin of magmatic layering is still hotly debated. To try to shed some light on this problem, two ultramafic–mafic layered xenoliths from Puy Beaunit (French Massif Central) were investigated in detail. The nodules belong to a stratiform intrusion emplaced in the deep crust during the Permian (257 ± 6 Ma; Féménias, O., Coussaert, N., Bingen, B., Whitehouse, M., Mercier, J.-C., Demaiffe, D., 2003. A Permian underplating event in late- to post-orogenic tectonic setting. Evidence from the mafic–ultramafic layered xenoliths from Beaunit (French Massif Central). Chem. Geol. 199 293–315.). The 3 to 5 cm thick nodules have, in common, a central orthopyroxenite layer; the succession of layers is, respectively, norite–orthopyroxenite–norite (PBN 00-01) and norite–orthopyroxenite–harzburgite (PBN 00-03). The variations of both major (by electron microprobe) and trace, essentially the RE, elements (by LA-ICP-MS) were measured in major mineral phases (orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, spinel) along cross-section perpendicular to the layering. Strong grain size, chemical and textural variations occur along these sections: they can be continuous or discontinuous, symmetrical or asymmetrical. Such complex variations cannot be solely related to a single magmatic history (fractional crystallisation, mineral sorting). Other processes such as element enrichment by residual liquid channelling along layer boundaries and/or sub-solidus recrystallisation and element redistribution must be invoked. It appears, in particular, that element distribution in the central orthopyroxenite layer could result from the injection of micro-sills of orthopyroxene-rich liquid between previously consolidated layers. 相似文献

Abstract: In this paper, we use commodity chain ideas to compare the All Blacks rugby tour of Great Britain and Ireland in 2005 with the formative 1905 tour, and to relate their cultural economy to their political economy. We argue that 'globalization' has become imagined and institutionalized in new ways that more thoroughly exploit rugby's production values. We highlight the value-adding potential of a 100-year-old tension between a colonial/imperial and a national identity. Our point is that fresh insights can be drawn from bringing cultural economy sensitivities to political economy approaches and concerns with identity and consumption to those of value and production. 相似文献

The maximum entropy technique is an accepted method of image reconstruction when the image is made up of pixels of unknown positive intensity (e.g. a grey-scale image). The problem of reconstructing the magnetic field at the core–mantle boundary from surface data is a problem where the target image, the value of the radial field Br , can be of either sign. We adopt a known extension of the usual maximum entropy method that can be applied to images consisting of pixels of unconstrained sign. We find that we are able to construct images which have high dynamic ranges, but which still have very simple structure. In the spherical harmonic domain they have smoothly decreasing power spectra. It is also noteworthy that these models have far less complex null flux curve topology (lines on which the radial field vanishes) than do models which are quadratically regularized. Problems such as the one addressed are ubiquitous in geophysics, and it is suggested that the applications of the method could be much more widespread than is currently the case. 相似文献

Stratiform and stratabound barite ± magnetite beds are intimately associated with the polymetallic Broken Hill-type (BHT)
massive sulfide deposits of the Aggeneys-Gamsberg Pb–Zn–Cu ± Ag–Ba district in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. Barite
samples were collected and studied from four localities in the district. Although metamorphic water–rock interaction processes
have partially altered the chemical and to a lesser degree the isotopic composition of barite, samples identified as being
the least altered display distinctly different isotopic compositions that are thought to reflect different modes of origin.
All barite samples are marked by low concentrations of SrO (0.5 ± 0.2 wt%), highly radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr ratios, elevated δ
34S and δ
18O values compared to contemporaneous Mesoproterozoic seawater. Radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr signatures (0.7164 ± 0.0028) point to an evolved continental crustal source for Sr and Ba, while elevated δ
34S values (27.3 ± 4.9‰) indicate that contemporaneous seawater sulfate, modified by bacterial sulfate reduction, was the single
most important sulfur reservoir for barite deposition. Most importantly, δ
18O values suggest a lower temperature of formation for the Gamsberg deposit compared with the occurrences in the Aggeneys area,
i.e. Swartberg-Tank Hill and Big Syncline. The obvious differences in temperature of formation are in good agreement with
the Cu-rich, Ba-poor nature of the sulfide mineralization of the Aggeneys deposits vs the Cu-poor, Ba-rich character of the
Gamsberg deposit. In conjunction with this, isotopic and petrographic arguments favor a sub-seafloor replacement model for
the stratabound barite occurrences of the Aggeneys deposits, while at Gamsberg, deposition at the sediment–water interface
as a true sedimentary exhalite appears more likely. 相似文献

Turbulence data collected over a total of 25 days during two summers are used to describe processes responsible for the nonstationarity
of turbulent sensible heat fluxes at Summit, Greenland. A stationarity test shows that about 40% of the data are classified
as nonstationary. Three main factors are explored to account for the large fraction of nonstationary runs: (1) intermittency
of turbulence in stable conditions, (2) changes in net all-wave radiation in response to cloud forcing, and (3) diurnal trends
in stability. A classification procedure that accounts for the intermittent nature of turbulence shows that during stable,
nonstationary conditions 50% of the total sensible heat flux is realized in 22% of the sampling time. Intermittency often
occurs at Summit during periods characterized by weak and irregular horizontal winds in combination with strong stability.
Rapid changes in net all-wave radiation in response to cloud forcing results in nonstationarity during unstable conditions.
Between 0930–1130 and 1900–1930 UTC turbulent heat fluxes are not only small in magnitude but also typically change sign,
with nonstationarity during these periods often as high as 65%. These results should help resolve some of the present uncertainties
in obtaining reliable fluxes at this site, in particular under stable atmospheric conditions. 相似文献
