Archaeological techniques and methodology are used to identify seismic traces and disorders in ancient buildings. Clear evidence could be identified as direct seismic consequences or as communities’ technical answers for repair or reinforcement of buildings in order to reduce their vulnerability. This methodology is called “archaeological reading of buildings.” It is based on the identification of different construction phases, modifications and past events (human actions or natural phenomena) suffered by buildings during their life. The data read from the buildings are successively observed, identified, described, and recorded, following the principal of archaeological stratigraphy, in order to explain the buildings history. The seismic pathologies are identified according to detailed engineering knowledge of the behaviour of buildings during seismic motion. In this case study, our approach is applied to the historical city of Manosque, located in a seismic area along the “Moyenne–Durance” active fault. As a result of historical researches (Quenet G, Baumont D, Scotti O, Levret A, Ann Geophys, 47(2/3):583–595, 2004), many historical documents gave evidence about this earthquake’s effects. Among these documents, was an exceptional one: the record of a survey made in Manosque by bricklayers a few days after the 14th August 1708 shock. This gave us specific information concerning the seismic damage caused in the town of Manosque and was the starting point to validate the method. In the present paper, the archaeological reading of buildings method is illustrated by two specific cases: the Charité building in Manosque and the Sainte-Agathe chapel in Saint-Maime village. The buildings suffered various modifications during many centuries. This complicates the application of the method, however the observations made from the buildings correlate well with the indications deduced from written sources, validating our approach. The study highlights the necessity to cross correlate different field data in the frame of a multidisciplinary approach in order to obtain valuable results concerning details of seismic damage, its approximate dating by architectural chronology and the communities’ reaction in terms of repairs and reinforcement techniques.  相似文献

The marine Callovo-Oxfordian clay formation is found at a depth around 410m in the eastern part of the Paris Basin (France). It is a very low permeability formation investigated by the French agency for nuclear waste management (ANDRA) to study the feasibility of a radioactive waste disposal. Examining hydrogeological and geochemical characteristics of the clay sequence may test confinement properties of this formation. This study uses chlorine isotopes to investigate long-term transport processes which may carry chemical elements out of the clay layer to the surrounding rocks. Detailed chlorine concentration and δ37Cl depth profiles are examined using pore waters and aquifer waters sampled in the clay formation and its surrounding aquifers (the Dogger at the bottom and the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian/Tithonian unit at the top). They are discussed in terms of chlorine budget and hydrogeological processes.Clay pore waters and aquifer waters show strong chlorine concentration depletion (<3000 mg/L) relative to the original marine interstitial water (∼19000 mg/L). This probably results from an early dilution by meteoric water in limestones (as also indicated by oxygen and hydrogen isotopes).A steep Cl-concentration gradient from the Dogger at ∼500m in depth (∼2500 mg/L) to the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian/Tithonian aquifer near the surface (≈ 10 mg/L) is associated to a ‘v-shaped’ profile of the δ37Cl values. Modelling Cl transport shows that a hydrodynamic dispersion process explains Cl concentration and δ37Cl profiles in Oxfordian Limestone. This process implies a mean upward flux of chloride in the 2.6 10−8-8.2 10−8 mole/m2/yr range from the clay formation towards upper limestones where a westward advective flow disperses the chloride. The modelling and knowledge of underground water transfer suggest a maximum effective Cl-hydrodynamic vertical dispersion coefficient (= vertical Cl-transport coefficient) of ∼7.6 10−10 m2/s.Chlorine transfer through the Callovo-Oxfordian clay, since deposition 160My ago, can be mainly described by the interplay of an early dilution and a later hydrodynamic dispersion event which has apparently erased most of the isotopic effects of diagenetic events (such as early diffusion, ion filtration etc.).  相似文献

The aim of the paper is to emphasize the importance of accounting for the Fresnel volume and for the Interface Fresnel zone (IFZ) for calculating the amplitude of the P wave emanating from a point source and recorded at a receiver after its specular reflection on a smooth homogeneous interface between elastic media. For this purpose, by considering the problem of interest as a problem of diffraction by the IFZ, that is, the physically relevant part of the interface which actually affects the reflected wavefield, we have developed a method which combines the Angular Spectrum Approach (ASA) with the IFZ concept to get the 3-D analytical solution. The variation in the reflected P -wave amplitude evaluated with the ASA, as a function of the incidence angle, is compared with the plane wave (PW) reflection coefficient and with the exact solution provided by the 3-D code OASES, for one solid/solid configuration and two dominant frequencies of the source. For subcritical incidence angles the geometrical spreading compensation is mostly quite sufficient to reduce the point-source amplitudes to the PW amplitudes. On the contrary, for specific regions of incidence angles for which the geometrical spreading compensation is not sufficient anymore, that is, near the critical region and in the post-critical domain, the ASA combined with the IFZ concept yields better results than the PW theory whatever the dominant frequency of the source, which suggests that the additional application of the IFZ concept is necessary to obtain the reflected P -wave amplitude. Nevertheless, as the ASA combined with the IFZ has been used only for evaluating the contribution of the reflected wavefield at the receiver, its predictions fail when the interference between the reflected wave and the head wave becomes predominant.  相似文献

The extinction of ichthyosaurs is not well understood both in terns of time and of causation although it is supposed to have happened at some point of the Late Cretaceous. Four species of ichthyosaurs attributed to the single cosmopolitan genus Platypteygius Huene, 1922 are currently recognized from the Albian and Cenomanian, but after that time only fragmentary remains have been described. A review of these available post-Cenomanian ichthyosaur remains reveals that all are doubtful either from a stratigraphic or a systematic point of view. Ichthyosaur extinction may be tentatively correlated with the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary events. During this interval, biological factors such as a break in the food chain attested by severe extinction in marine invertebrates, especially belemnites, may have led to the extinction of ichthyosaurs.  相似文献

We report here a newly developed method for measurement of Li isotopes by use of multi-collector ICP-MS (Neptune) allowing rapid and high precision determination of Li isotope ratios at low levels of lithium (15–20 ng). The lithium reference sample solution IRMM-016 was analysed over a period of ten months with an external reproducibility of 0.24% (2s, n = 52). Chemical separation of Li from matrix was performed on the seawater sample IRMM BCR-403, for which a mean δ7Li value of + 31.0 ± 0.1 % (2s/√n, n = 31) was obtained. This mean value is in good agreement with those previously published for other seawater samples. BCR-403 seawater being readily available, we propose that this seawater sample be used as a reference sample for Li isotope measurements.  相似文献

Subrounded microaggregates 100 to 500 μm in diameter were collected in a Ferralsol located in the state of Goiàs. Observation of these microaggregates in dry conditions in scanning electron microscopy showed morphological characteristics that are representative of microaggregates described earlier in many Ferralsols. The shrinkage for drying of initially water saturated microaggregates was studied using an environmental scanning electron microscope. Results showed very small shrinkage for the microaggregates usually studied. However, the shrinkage varies since the volume of dried microaggregates was found to be 93 to 99% of their volume when they are saturated. To cite this article: N. Volland-Tuduri et al., C. R. This paper presents the result of measurements of floodplain sedimentation using sediment traps. The study was carried out on two embanked floodplains along the Rivers Rhine and Meuse in The Netherlands during a 3 day flood in January 1993. Raster maps of sediment accumulation were made by interpolating the measurements from the traps using block kriging. The sediment maps show clear patterns in sediment accumulation, together with the estimated interpolation errors. Average sediment accumulation ranges between 0·57 and 1·0 kg m?2. High sediment accumulation is found on the levees (4 kg m?2 or more) and on low lying areas (1·6 kg m?2); sediment accumulation decreases with distance from the main channel. The sedimentation patterns are related to floodplain topography and sediment transporting mechanisms. Sediment transport by turbulent diffusion as well as by convection can be recognized. Also, flood duration and the process of sediment settling out in ponding water in closed depressions are important. The applied method allows comparison of the results with raster-based sedimentation models.  相似文献
