Phase transitions and associated domains of meteoritic troilite (FeS) have been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Three polymorphs have been found, two of which can be described by superstructures of the NiAs-type structure (A, C subcell). The P \(\overline 6\) 2c (√3A, 2C) polymorph, stable at room temperature, displays antiphase domains with the displacement vector 1/3< \(\overline {\text{1}}\) 10>. In situ heating experiments showed that the P \(\overline 6\) 2c polymorph changes at temperatures of 115°–150° C into an orthorhombic pseudohexagonal transitional phase with the probable space group Pmcn (A,√3A, C). It contains antiphase domains with the displacement vector 1/2 [110] and twins with a threefold twin-axis parallel c. When heated above 210° C the transitional phase transforms into the high-temperature modification with NiAs structure (P6 3/mmc). All observed phase transitions are reversible. The occurrence of antiphase and twin domains, respectively, agrees with the symmetry reductions involved in the subsolidus phase transitions. This is demonstrated by group-subgroup relationships among the space groups P6 3/mmc, Pmcn, and P \(\overline 6\) 2c.  相似文献

The tropical gardens and landscape designs of the Brazilian landscapist, Roberto Burle Marx, are examined in relation to the historical development of the European concept of "the tropical". The argument is made that Burle Marx's pared down, austere, and abstract designs, which incorporate tropical plants in innovative fashion, yet make no effort to recreate or imitate a jungle experience, can be interpreted as offering a possible solution to the dialectic of nature and culture in a country burdened historically by the designation "tropical".  相似文献

Biomass burning and resulting fire regimes are major drivers of vegetation changes and of ecosystem dynamics. Understanding past fire dynamics and their relationship to these factors is thus a key factor in preserving and managing present biodiversity and ecosystem functions. Unfortunately, our understanding of the disturbance dynamics of past fires is incomplete, and many open questions exist relevant to these concepts and the related methods. In this paper we describe the present status of the fire-regime concept, discuss the notion of the fire continuum and related proxies, and review the most important existing approaches for reconstructing fire history at centennial to millennial scales. We conclude with a short discussion of selected directions for future research that may lead to a better understanding of past fire-regime dynamics. In particular, we suggest that emphasis should be laid on (1) discriminating natural from anthropogenic fire-regime types, (2) improving combined analysis of fire and vegetation reconstructions to study long-term fire ecology, and (3) overcoming problems in defining temporal and spatial scales of reference, which would allow better use of past records to gain important insights for landscape, fire and forest management.  相似文献

Monsoon response of the Somali Current and associated upwelling   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The Somali Current typically develops in different phases in response to the onset of the summer monsoon. Each of these phases exists quasistationary for some time ranging from weeks to months. These periods of rather constant circulation patterns are separated by periods of rapid transition.In the early phase of the monsoon response, during May, with weak southerly winds off Somalia, a cross equatorial inertial current develops which turns offshore a few degrees north of the equator with a coastal upwelling wedge just north of the offshore flow. North of that region, an Ekman upwelling regime exists all the way up the coast. At the onset of strong winds in June, a northern anticyclonic gyre develops north of 5°N and a second cold wedge forms north of 8°–9°N, where that current turns offshore. The most drastic change of upwelling pattern occurs in the late phase of the summer monsoon, August/September, when the southern cold wedge propagates northward, indicating a break-down of the two-gyre pattern and development of a continuous boundary current from south of the equator to about 10°N. The wedge propagation during 1976–1978 is discussed, based on satellite observations (EVANS and BROWN, 1981), moored station data during 1978, 1979 and shipboard hydrographic data during 1979. A simple relation between the decrease of local monsoon winds offshore and wedge propagation cannot be determined.The southward coastal undercurrent, which is part of the Ekman upwelling regime north of 5° during the early summer monsoon, seems to turn offshore between 3° and 5°, probably due to a zonal excursion of depth contours in that area. With the spin-up of the deep-reaching northern gyre the undercurrent is extinguished during July to August but seems to get reestablished after the coalescence of the two gyres.  相似文献

Abstract– Despite the fact that Si is considered a potentially important metalloid in planetary systems, little is known about the effect of Si in metallic melts on trace element partitioning behavior. Previous studies have established the effects of S, C, and P, nonmetals, through solid metal/liquid metal experiments in the corresponding Fe binary systems, but the Fe‐Si system is not appropriate for similar experiments because of the high solubility of Si in solid metal. In this work, we present the results from 0.1 MPa experiments with two coexisting immiscible metallic liquids in the Fe‐S‐Si system. By leveraging the extensive available knowledge about the effect of S on trace element partitioning behavior, we explore the effect of Si. Results for 22 trace elements are presented. Strong Si avoidance behavior is demonstrated by As, Au, Ga, Ge, Sb, Sn, and Zn. Iridium, Os, Pt, Re, Ru, and W exhibit weak Si avoidance tendencies. Silicon appears to have no significant effect on the partitioning behaviors of Ag, Co, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pd, and V, all of which had similar partition coefficients over a wide range of Si liquid concentrations from Si‐free to 13 wt%. The only elements in our experiments to show evidence of a potentially weak attraction to Si were Mo and Rh. Applications of the newly determined effects of Si to problems in planetary science indicate that (1) The elements Ni, Co, Mo, and W, which are commonly used in planetary differentiation models, are minimally affected by the presence of Si in the metal, especially in comparison to other effects such as from oxygen fugacity. 2) Reduced enstatite‐rich meteorites may record a chemical signature due to Si in the metallic melts during partial melting, and if so, elements identified by this study as having strong Si avoidance may offer unique insight into unraveling the history of these meteorites.  相似文献

Absolute spectrophotometry of the coma of Comet Kohoutek 1973f is discussed for the nights of January 24 and 26, 1974. Specific intensities are measured for spectral features and a continuum band in the wavelength region λλ3460–6062Å. The (0, 0) band of the Δν = 0 sequence of the violet system of the cyanogen molecule is analyzed and column densities of 1.7 × 1015m?2 and 3.4 × 1014m?2 are found for January 24 and 26, 1974, respectively. The analysis of the bands of C2 will be reported in a second paper of this series.  相似文献

Abstract— ‐Iron meteorites exhibit a large range in Ni concentrations, from only 4% to nearly 60%. Most previous experiments aimed at understanding the crystallization of iron meteorites have been conducted in systems with about 10% Ni or less. We performed solid metal/liquid metal experiments to determine the effect of Ni on partition coefficients for 20 trace elements pertinent to iron meteorites. Experiments were conducted in both the end‐member Ni‐S system as well as in the Fe‐Ni‐S system with intermediate Ni compositions applicable to high‐Ni iron meteorites. The Ni content of the system affects solid metal/liquid metal partitioning behavior. For a given S concentration, partition coefficients in the Ni‐S system can be over an order of magnitude larger than in the Fe‐S system. However, for compositions relevant to even the most Ni‐rich iron meteorites, the effect of Ni on partitioning behavior is minor, amounting to less than a factor of two for the majority of trace elements studied. Any effect of Ni also appears minor when it is compared to the large influence S has on element partitioning behavior. Thus, we conclude that in the presence of an evolving S‐bearing metallic melt, crystallization models can safely neglect effects from Ni when considering the full range of iron meteorite compositions.  相似文献

Presented here are analyses of the photometric measurements acquired by the imaging system on the MESSENGER spacecraft during its three flybys of Mercury, in particular the dedicated sequence of photometric measurements obtained during the third flyby. A concise, analytical approach is adopted for characterizing the effects of scattered light on the images. This approach works well for wavelengths shorter than 700 nm but breaks down at the longer wavelengths where the scattering behavior of the imaging system is more complex. Broadband spectral properties are commensurate with ground-based observations for spectra acquired at phase angles less than 110°; photometric corrections to a common illumination and viewing geometry provide consistent results for those phase angles. No phase reddening is apparent in the image-derived spectra. A bolometric albedo of 0.081 is derived over the wavelength range of the imaging system.  相似文献

Abstract— Repeated impacts into fragmental targets simulating unconsolidated debris on planetary surfaces have provided empirical insight into the evolution of planetary regoliths. Quantitative understanding and interpretation of these results, however, are often made difficult by the complex, multivariate nature of the impact process, even under controlled laboratory conditions. The techniques of dimensional analysis have been employed to quantify and examine the relationships between the more important variables in the evolution of these experimental regoliths. Application of this method to the results of ten experimental series shows that the quantity of comminuted target mass is directly proportional to (a) the number of impacts sustained by the target, (b) the diameter of the projectile, (c) the mean size of the crystals composing the target rock, (d) the mean grain-size of the evolving “regolith,” (e) the total target mass, (f) the impactor density, and (g) the ratio of the impact velocity to the velocity of sound in the target rock. The comminuted mass is inversely proportional to the density of the target rock and the sorting of the “regolith.” Similar results hold for the creation of new surfaces by fracturing, except that the initial surface area possessed by the target takes the place of the total target mass. In addition, the ease with which new surfaces are created is independent of the mean crystal-size. Although it appears that the ratio between impactor and target densities is an important parameter in both cases, more experiments will be necessary to establish the quantitative contribution of that parameter, as well as those of the total target mass and the effective strengths of the individual minerals composing the target rock.  相似文献
