Existing unreinforced masonry buildings frequently suffer out-of-plane local collapse mechanisms when undergoing earthquake
ground motion. The energy damping that occurs during the motion, due to impacts of a wall against the foundation or against
other walls, is a relevant parameter on the response. An experimental investigation has been carried out to estimate the dissipation
of kinetic energy that takes place during free oscillations. Restraint conditions allow for two-sided rocking (wall resting
on a foundation) and one-sided rocking (wall resting on a foundation adjacent to transverse walls). Five specimens have been
tested, modelling walls acted out-of-plane (fa?ades). When one-sided rocking is under consideration, different depths of the
contact surface between fa?ade and transverse walls are considered. In the case of two-sided rocking, the experimental coefficient
of restitution is slightly lower than the analytic coefficient. In the case of one-sided rocking, an analytic formulation
is proposed and this is compared against experimental data. Although the coefficient of restitution of one-sided rocking is
less than half that of two-sided rocking, it is not equal to zero. Thus, it cannot induce a sudden stop of the motion. Hence,
nonlinear time history analyses performed under this assumption may prove unsafe. Moreover, a comparison has been carried
out between overturning maps, induced by twenty natural accelerograms, computed for the analytic coefficient of restitution
and those computed for the experimental coefficient of restitution. The increased energy dissipation reduces the frequency

Recent years have witnessed the spread of an array of market-inspired environmental governance approaches, often associated with neoliberal ideas, programs and policies. Drawing on the governmentality framework and focusing on the examples of biotechnology patenting and the financialisation of climate and weather, the article argues that the conceptual underpinnings of these approaches lie in a novel understanding of the ontological quality of the biophysical world. The latter is conceived as fully plastic, controllable, open to an ever-expanding human agency. Neoliberal governance operates through, rather than despite, disorder - that is, through contingency, uncertainty, instability. In the public realm this idea constitutes a sort of shared horizon of meaning; but environmental social theory has a difficult time accounting for it. By reviewing three major perspectives, namely ecological modernization, neo-Marxism and poststructuralism, it is shown that behind contradictions and reticence in their assessments of neoliberal governance lie difficulties in making sense of the latter's theoretical core. Northwest Africa (NWA) 6583 is a silicate‐bearing iron meteorite with Ni = 18 wt%. The oxygen isotope composition of the silicates (?′17O = ?0.439 ‰) indicates a genetic link with the IAB‐complex. Other chemical, mineralogical, and textural features of NWA 6583 are consistent with classification as a new member of the IAB‐complex. However, some unique features, e.g., the low Au content (1.13 μg g?1) and the extremely reducing conditions of formation (approximately ?3.5 ?IW), distinguish NWA 6583 from the known IAB‐complex irons and extend the properties of this group of meteorites. The chemical and textural features of NWA 6583 can be ascribed to a genesis by impact melting on a parent body of chondritic composition. This model is also consistent with one of the most recent models for the genesis of the IAB‐complex. Northwest Africa 6583 provides a further example of the wide lithological and mineralogical variety that impact melting could produce on the surface of a single asteroid, especially if characterized by an important compositional heterogeneity in space and time like a regolith. 相似文献

We present results from a deep mid-infrared survey of the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S) region performed at 6.7 and 15 μm with the ISOCAM instrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory ( ISO ). The final map in each band was constructed by the co-addition of four independent rasters, registered using bright sources securely detected in all rasters, with the absolute astrometry being defined by a radio source detected at both 6.7 and 15 μm. We sought detections of bright sources in a circular region of radius 2.5 arcmin at the centre of each map, in a manner that simulations indicated would produce highly reliable and complete source catalogues using simple selection criteria. Merging source lists in the two bands yielded a catalogue of 35 distinct sources, which we calibrated photometrically using photospheric models of late-type stars detected in our data. We present extragalactic source count results in both bands, and discuss the constraints that they impose on models of galaxy evolution, given the volume of space sampled by this galaxy population. 相似文献

We present new BeppoSAX observations of seven BL Lacertae objects selected from the 1-Jy sample plus one additional source. The collected data cover the energy range (observer's frame), reaching ∼50 keV for one source (BL Lac). All sources characterized by a peak in their multifrequency spectra at infrared/optical energies (i.e., of the low-energy peaked BL Lac type, LBL) display a relatively flat X-ray spectrum, which we interpret as inverse Compton emission. Four objects (two-thirds of the LBLs) show some evidence for a low-energy steepening, which is probably due to the synchrotron tail merging into the inverse Compton component around ∼ . If this were generally the case with LBLs, it would explain why the ROSAT spectra of our sources are systematically steeper than the BeppoSAX ones . The broad-band spectral energy distributions fully confirm this picture, and a synchrotron inverse Compton model allows us to derive the physical parameters (intrinsic power, magnetic field, etc.) of our sources. Combining our results with those obtained by BeppoSAX on BL Lacs covering a wide range of synchrotron peak frequency, ν peak , we confirm and clarify the dependence of the X-ray spectral index on ν peak originally found in ROSAT data. 相似文献

I critically discuss in a pedagogical and phenomenological way a few crucial tests challenging the recent claims by Pietronero and collaborators that there is no evidence from available galaxy catalogues that the Universe is actually homogeneous above a certain scale. In a series of papers, these authors assert that observations are consistent with a fractal distribution of objects extending to the limit of the present data. I show that while galaxies are indeed clustered in a scale-free (fractal) way on small and intermediate scales, this behaviour does not continue indefinitely. Although the specific wavelength at which the galaxy distribution apparently turns to homogeneity is dangerously close to the size of the largest samples presently available, there are serious hints suggesting that this turnover is real and that its effects are detected in the behaviour of statistical estimators. The most recent claims of a continuing fractal hierarchy up to scales of several hundreds Megaparsecs seem to be ascribable to the use of incomplete samples or to an improper treatment of otherwise high-quality data sets. The fractal perspective, nevertheless, represents a fruitful way to look at the clustering properties of galaxies, when properly coupled to the traditional gravitational instability scenario. In the last part of this paper I will try to clarify, at a very simple level, some of the confusion existing on the actual scaling properties of the galaxy distribution, and discuss how these can provide hints on the evolution of the large-scale structure of the Universe. 相似文献

We build a sample of 298 spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies at redshift z - 2, selected in the z850-band from the GOODS-MUSIC catalog. By utilizing the rest frame 8 p.m luminosity as a proxy of the star formation rate (SFR), we check the accuracy of the standard SED-fitting technique, finding it is not accurate enough to provide reliable estimates of the physical parameters of galaxies. We then develop a new SED-fitting method that includes the IR luminosity as a prior and a generalized Calzetti law with a variable Rv. Then we exploit the new method to re-analyze our galaxy sample, and to robustly determine SFRs, stellar masses and ages. We find that there is a general trend of increasing attenuation with the SFR. Moreover, we find that the SFRs range between a few to 103 M~ yr-1, the masses from 109 to 4 ~ 1011 Mo, and the ages from a few tens of Myr to more than 1 Gyr. We discuss how individual age measurements of highly attenuated objects indicate that dust must have formed within a few tens of Myr and already been copious at 〈 100 Myr. In addition, we find that low luminosity galaxies harbor, on average, significantly older stellar populations and are also less massive than brighter ones; we discuss how these findings and the well known 'downsizing' scenario are consistent in a framework where less massive galaxies form first, but their star formation lasts longer. Finally, we find that the near-IR attenuation is not scarce for luminous objects, contrary to what is customarily assumed; we discuss how this affects the interpretation of the observed M,/L ratios. 相似文献

The Fe oxidation state and coordination number of 29 impact glass spherules recently recovered from the Transantarctic Mountains (Antarctica) have been determined by X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Based on geochemical, isotopic, and fission track data, these spherules are considered as microtektites from the Australasian tektite/microtektite strewn field. Their find location is the farthest so far discovered from the possible source crater region, and their alkali content is the lowest compared with other published data on Australasian microtektite glasses. The Fe3+/(Fe2++Fe3+) ratio, determined from the analysis of the pre‐edge peak energy position and integrated intensity, is below 0.1 (±0.04) for all the samples, and is comparable to that of most tektites and microtektites from the Australasian strewn field. Also, the pre‐edge peak integrated intensity, which is sensitive to the average Fe coordination geometry, is comparable to that of other Australasian microtektites reported in the literature. The agreement of the Fe oxidation state and coordination number, between the Transantarctic Mountain microtektites (TAM) and the Australasian tektites and microtektites, further confirms the impact origin of these glass spherules and provides an independent suggestion that they represent a major extension southeastward of the Australasian strewn field. The fact that similar redox conditions are observed in tektites and microtektites within the Australasian strewn field regardless of the distance from the source crater area (up to approximately 11000 km) could be an important constraint for better understanding the different processes affecting microtektite formation and transport. The fact that the Fe oxidation state of microtektites does not increase with distance, as in the case of North American microtektites, means that thermal and redox histories of Australasian and TAM microtektites could differ significantly from those of North American microtektites. 相似文献
