Edelvang, Karen; Larsen, Michael; Pejrup, Morten: Tidal Variation in Field Settling Velocities of Suspended Sediment in a Tidal Channel. Geografisk Tidsskrift 92:116–121. Copenhagen 1992.

Particles of silt and clay may form large, low density floes when suspended in salt water. The sediment floes have settling velocities much higher than the single small particles constituting them and therefore, the flocculation process may strongly influence the transport of cohesive sediment in estuarine environments. will be described in this paper, the field settling velocities of suspended sediment were investigated in a large tidal channel with tidal current velocities up to 1.3 m/s and depths of about 10 m. The analyses of suspended sediment were made on both bottom and surface samples. For the bottom samples, equivalent median fall diameters in the range 26–98 μm were measured. For surface samples, the range was 15–40 μm. During most of the tidal period, the occurrence of much larger settling diameters near the bottom was due to the suspension of individual sand and silt particles. For the investigated periods, high-tide was the only possible time to observe flocculation influencing the vertical distribution of finegrained sediment in the water column.  相似文献

Robust, independent age constraints on the absolute timing of climate events based on the U-series dating of fossil coral are sparse before the last glacial cycle. Using multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry with multiple-Faraday protocols, we are able to date ~ 600 ka samples with an uncertainty of better than ± 15 ka (2σ), representing a three-fold improvement in precision compared with previous techniques. Using these methods, we report U-series measurements for a suite of > 500 thousand year old (ka) corals from Henderson Island, an emergent atoll in the south-central Pacific Ocean. The fossil corals show extraordinarily little diagenetic alteration for their age and the best-preserved sample yields a U-series age of 600 ± 15 ka (2σ), which overlaps with the timing of the warm Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 15 interglacial. The open-system model of Villemant and Feuillet [Villemant B. and Feuillet N. (2003) Dating open systems by the 238U–234U–230Th method: application to Quaternary reef terraces. Earth and Planetary Science Letters 210(1–2), 105–118.] and the linear regression (or open-system isochron) is clearly limited for such old samples. However, the open-system model developed by Thompson et al. [Thompson W.G., Spiegelman M.W., Goldstein S.L., and Speed R.C. (2003) An open-system model for U-series age determinations of fossil corals. Earth and Planetary Science Letters 210(1–2), 365–381.] appears to reliably correct for open-system effects in roughly half of the corals, giving a MIS 15 origin for these. Thus the data provide evidence that the systematic addition of 230Th and 234U through α-recoil is a dominant open-system process occurring in the Henderson Island fossil reef system. Several coral samples yield significantly older Thompson et al. open-system ages between 650 and 750 ka. The uncertainty on these ages (typically ± 30 kyrs) is too great for precise assignment but most data overlap with the MIS 17 interglacial. The reliability of these ages is currently unclear. It is shown that separate aliquots of the same coral can yield different Thompson model ages. Therefore, there appear to be additional diagenetic mechanisms that create further anomalous excursions in the U-series systematics, limiting the reliability of the Thompson et al. open-system model.  相似文献

Ten samples of blueschist facies eclogites occurring as dykes in the ultramafic rocks of the Voltri Group were analysed for eigth rare earth elements (REE). Their patterns are clearly different from those of cognate eclogites enclosed in ultramafic rocks and similar to those of the volcanic rocks dredged from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). This similarity confirms both the tholeiitic nature of the magma injected into the Pennidic oceanic basement and metamorphosed to eclogite, and the immobile character of REE during metamorphism up to 10 Kbar and 450°C. Depletion of LREE vs HREE and a positive Eu anomaly in the coarse-grained central portions of the former dykes suggest their derivation from a mush consisting of pyroxene and plagioclase plus trapped superferrian liquid. The high total REE content and the flat pattern of the fine-grained eclogites occurring at the borders of the dykes are consistent with their derivation from a rapidly crystallized superferrian liquid.  相似文献

The subject of this paper is the treatment of rocks - and, especially, fluid-saturated and partially saturated reservoir rocks, as composite visco-elastic media. By this we mean to study and partially answer the question of how the effective material (frequency-dependent and complex-valued stiffness/density) parameters can be estimated from a knowledge of the constituents of the rocks, their volume fractions, the statistical distribution of sizes, shapes, orientations and positions of the individual particles (minerals of quartz, clay, etc.) and cavities (pores, cracks, etc.); in addition to parameters related to the fluid and its ability to flow, at the scale of the microstructure as well as that of the wavelength (assumed to be long compared to the scale-size of the microstructure). Our approach is to develop and combine a theory of stochastic waves with established results for the micromechanics of defects in solids, as well as state-of-the-art models of wave-induced fluid flow. Specifically, we first derive an exact formal expression for the effective material parameters in terms of a dynamic T-matrix for the material, which satisfies a single integral equation of the Lippmann-Schwinger type (known from quantum scattering theory), but formulated in an abstract vector space, associated with the combination of the strain and velocity fields into a more general state vector . Inclusions-based models are developed on the basis of standard many-body techniques, known from the static T-matrix approach as well as nuclear collision theory. The t-matrix of a low-aspect-ratio spheroidal crack is expressed in terms of the familiar displacement discontinuity parameters of Hudson, via the so-called K-tensor, which is of interest in itself, for example, when connecting cracks to pores (in the presence of multiple solid constituents) on the basis of an expression for the t-matrix of a communicating cavity. The present theory can in principle be used beyond the Rayleigh limit, but explicit estimates of the effective material parameters have so far been derived only under the assumption that (scattering attenuation can be ignored) the wavelength is large compared to the scale-size of a representative volume element. Starting with the dynamic equations of motion, we show that the behaviour of the mean wave in the Rayleigh limit is indeed determined by the effective stiffness tensor associated with a static theory of composites, in conjunction with the spatially averaged density for the heterogeneous material as a whole. Thus, we have provided justification to the procedure we used in a series of related papers, where we started out with the static equilibrium condition and employed the elastic/visco-elastic correspondence principle. Numerical examples (dealing with the effects of randomly oriented cracks on the isotropic velocity and attenuation spectra of a dual porosity model of clay-sand mixtures, and the effects of spatial distribution on the anisotropic attenuation spectra of fully aligned cracks that are partially saturated with two different fluids) will be provided in order to complement those in our earlier papers.  相似文献

Komatiites of the Karasjok Greenstone Belt, northern Norway, show two unusual features: they have certain compositional differences compared with other komatiites, and they are largely volcaniclastic in origin. Their geological setting suggests that the komatiites were crupted into shallow water, thus permitting phreatomagmatic eruption, in a small ocean basin that opened in the Baltic Shield. The major oxides (except for TiO2), the trace elements Y, Sc, V, heavy rare earth elements (HREE), Cr, Co, Ni and the platinum group elements (PGE) cover similar ranges to those observed in other komatiites, but TiO2, Sm, Zr and Hf (Ti-associated elements, TAE) are enriched compared with abundances commonly reported for komatiites. Thus, the Karasjok komatiites have interelement ratios 2 to 3 times greater than chondritic between the TAE and the HREE, PGE, Sc, V, Y, Al (HRE-associated elements, HAE). The light rare earth elements (LREE), Ta and Th are enriched in some samples relative to Ti, Sm, Zr, and Hf, but are depleted in others. One group of rocks that is similar to the Karasjok komatiites both in terms of geological setting and geochemistry is the Baffin Bay picrites. The reason for the high concentrations of TAE in the Karasjok komatiites could be that they formed at lower degrees of partial melting than most komatiites. The greater-than-chondritic TAE/HAE ratios indicate that garnet was a residual phase during their formation, requiring that the melt formed at a pressure greater than 40 kb. A model involving decompression melting of a mantle plume rising in a rifting environment, can explain the main features of the Karasjok komatiites.  相似文献

This paper presents the first unambiguous terrestrial palaeoecological record for the late glacial “Bølling warming” in Denmark. Pollen and macrofossil stratigraphies from pre-Bølling to 10,800 cal yr BP are presented from a small kettle hole in Southwest Denmark, during which the lake basin developed from an immature stage after the deglaciation to complete infilling in the early Holocene. Results show that the recently deglaciated landscape bore a discontinuous vegetation of pioneer plants. After the Bølling warming, an open Dryas octopetala-Betula nana community developed with Helianthemum oelandicum. Subarctic species were dominant and local successions were probably delayed by relatively unstable and infertile soils. There is no indication of a climate cooling during the period corresponding to the Older Dryas, but the occurrence of several drought tolerant and steppe species indicates that the period was relatively dry. In the Allerød period the Dryas-B. nana vegetation was initially replaced by an open Salix and grass dominated vegetation and some 400 years later, the first tree birches were documented presumably occupying moist and sheltered soils while drier land remained open. In the Younger Dryas period trees disappeared and the vegetation became open again and dominated by subarctic species. Following climate warming at the Younger Dryas–Holocene transition a shrub community of Empetrum and Juniperus developed. After approximately 200 years it was replaced by birch forest. Overall, the late-glacial vegetation cover had a more open and patchy character than inferred from previous pollen studies as assessment of the vegetation succession based on macrofossil evidence is essential. The inferred general vegetation development corresponds well with results of other studies in the region. Canonical ordinations (RDA) indicate that vegetation changes at the landscape scale during the Lateglacial period were driven by changes in climate, soils and competition for light.  相似文献

Eight catchments, an area of 15 to 35 km2, have been studied within an ecogeochemical mapping programme in the western Kola Peninsula and contiguous parts of Finland and Norway. Three catchments, one northeast of Zapolyarniy (1) and two, 5 and 25 km south of Monchegorsk (2 and 4) show high levels of deposition of heavy metals, especially nickel (Ni) and copper (Cu), related to the metallurgical industry in these cities. Twenty-five topsoil samples, from sites evenly distributed over catchment 2, have mean contents of Ni and Cu 1 to 2 orders of magnitude higher than both C-horizon samples from the same sites and topsoil samples from catchment 4, providing strong evidence for the anthropogenic origin of the heavy metals. The same samples show geometric mean total contents for the noble metals analysed of: 1.4 μg/kg rhodium (Rh), 49.6 μg/kg platinum (Pt), 187.6 μg/kg palladium (Pd) and 9.5 μg/kg gold (Au). The pattern of concentration of the noble metals mirrors that found in published averages for ore from the Talnakh mineralizations in the Noril'sk province, though 1–2 orders of magnitude lower. This also clearly shows that the noble-metal contents of the topsoil are anthropogenic, and suggests that they emanate from the plants in Monchegorsk at an early stage in treatment of the ore, probably as a minor component of Ni-Cu rich particles. The noble-metal geochemistry of the topsoil in the other catchments also reflects the nature of the ore being processed at the plants nearby.  相似文献
