The Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous platform‐slope to basinal carbonate strata cropping out in Gargano Promontory (southern Italy) are partly dolomitized. Fieldwork and laboratory analyses (petrographic, petrophysical and geochemical) allowed the characterization of the dolomite bodies with respect to their distribution within the carbonate succession, their dimensions, geometries, textural variability, chemical stability, age, porosity, genetic mechanisms and relation with tectonics. The dolomite bodies range from metres to kilometres in size, are fault‐related and fracture‐related, and probably formed during the Early Cretaceous at <500 m burial depths and temperatures <50°C. The proposed dolomitization model relies on mobilization of Early Cretaceous seawater that flowed, downward and then upward, along faults and fractures and was modified in its isotopic composition moving through Triassic and Jurassic strata that underlie the studied dolomitized succession. Despite the numerous cases reported in literature, this study demonstrates that hydrothermal and/or high‐temperature fluids are not necessarily required for fault‐controlled dolomitization. Distribution and geometries of dolomite bodies can be used for palaeotectonic reconstructions, as they partly record the characteristics (size, attitude and kinematics) of the palaeo‐faults, even if not preserved, that controlled dolomitization. In Gargano Promontory, dolomites record Early Cretaceous palaeo‐faults from metres to kilometres long, striking north‐west/south‐east to east/west and characterized by normal to strike‐slip kinematics. Dolomitization increases the matrix porosity by up to 7% and, therefore, can improve the geofluid storage capacity of tight, platform‐slope to basinal limestones. The results have a great significance for characterization of geofluid (for example, hydrocarbons) reservoirs hosted in similar dolomitized carbonate successions. Distribution, size and shapes of reservoir rocks (i.e. dolomite bodies) could be broadly predictable if the characteristics of the palaeo‐fault system present at the time of dolomitization are known.  相似文献

Slow-maintained static load tests were performed on closed-ended and open-ended steel pipe piles driven side by side in a gravelly sand soil profile. The site investigation consisted of multiple cone penetration tests (CPTs) and standard penetration tests (SPTs), as well as laboratory tests on soil samples collected at various depths from the test site to determine basic soil properties. The test piles were densely instrumented with a combination of electrical-resistance and vibrating-wire strain gauges. The open-ended test pile was a specially fabricated double-wall, fully-instrumented pile, allowing for separation of the measurements of the inner and outer shaft resistances. Detailed comparison of the load test results, in terms of driving resistance, load response and profiles of unit shaft and base resistances for the two test piles, is presented and discussed. The applicability of three CPT-based pile design methods is assessed through a layer-by-layer comparison of the estimated resistances with those measured in the static load tests.

We use an atomistic model to simulate the structure, lattice dynamics and thermodynamics of silicate minerals. Our approach uses the Born model of a solid, in which the interaction between atoms is described by an interatomic pair potential. We have extended the study of thermodynamics to its very limit by looking at the subtle reaction of oxygen isotope exchange. We have modelled equilibria involving the important metamorphic minerals; albite, diopside, forsterite, pyrope, quartz and wollastonite. The predicted structural and thermodynamic data for these silicates are in very good agreement with the observed values. In addition, we predict not only the correct direction for the phase equilibria for oxygen isotope exchange, but also fractionation factors for the reaction to within a factor of two of the available experimental data. Hence, the potentials used in our approach have shown excellent transferability and have performed very well against the most stringent of tests.  相似文献

Evaluation of BTEX Remediation by Natural Attenuation at a Coastal Facility   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Natural attenuation has emerged as a potential alternative for remediating sites contaminated with fuel hydrocarbons. This paper examines the viability of using attenuation through natural processes to remediate ground water at an industrial facility. The research combined field assessments with data analysis and modeling to evaluate plume stability and predict remediation times. Field data on natural attenuation indicate that BTEX contamination at the site is being attenuated at rates that vary within the range of 0.0001 to 0.0073/day. Stability analyses confirm that the BTEX plume has reached steady state. An analysis on mass flux showed that between 1979 and 1996, 95,000 pounds of BTEX were lost via biodegradation, while 8000 pounds were lost through other mechanisms. A first-order biodegradation rate of 0.0002/day for BTEX was obtained from the change in the total mass of dissolved BTEX with time. Cleanup times in excess of 200 years for the site were estimated using analytical modeling of natural attenuation, which agreed well with the remediation times estimated using the attenuation rates calculated for the site.  相似文献

A wide range of natural raw materials is used in the manufacture of traditional ceramic products such as ceramic tiles, frits, glazes and pigments. The chemical composition of these raw materials needs to be strictly controlled to assure end-product quality and enable the identification of the origin of defects caused by impurities or contamination. Six types of ceramic raw materials (silica sand, clays and kaolin, feldspars and related minerals, calcium and magnesium carbonates, sodium and calcium borates, and zirconium silicates) have been analysed in this study. X-ray fluorescence (XRF), potentiometry, coulometry and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) were used in this chemical characterisation. A methodology has been established for characterising each studied raw material, by identifying the chemical elements to be determined, selecting the most appropriate technique and validating each measurement. The reference materials used for validation were BCS CRM 267, 313/1, 393 and 388 (BAS), GBW 03103, GBW 07404, NIST SRM 181, 201a and 1835, Euronorm CRM 782-1 and Syenite SY-2. The results showed that most of the elements present in the geological samples used as traditional ceramic raw materials could be determined by XRF. The determination of light elements, such as lithium, fluorine and boron, is more suitably conducted by ICP-AES/AAS, potentiometry or potentiometry/ICP-AES respectively. Organic and inorganic carbon could be determined by coulometry. Inorganic carbon (CO2) could also be determined by coulometry or by thermogravimetry, if samples did not contain clay minerals. Loss on ignition was always determined by gravimetry.  相似文献

 Using lattice dynamic modelling of pure MgSiO3 clinopyroxenes, we have be able to simulate the properties of both the low-clino (P21/c) and a high-density-clino (C2/c) phases and our results are comparable with the high pressure (HP) X-ray study of these phases (Angel et al. 1992). The transition between the two phases is predicted to occur at 6GPa. The volume variation with pressure for both phases is described by a third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state with the parameters V 0 low=31.122 cm3·mol−1, K T0 low= 107.42 GPa, K′ T0 low=5.96, V 0 high=30.142 cm3·mol–1, K T0 high102.54 GPa and K′ T0  high=8.21. The change in entropy between the two modelled phases at 6GPa is ΔS 6 Gpa=−1.335 J·mol−1·K−1 and the equivalent change in volume is ΔV 6 GPa=−0.92 cm3·mol−1, from which the gradient of the phase boundary δPT is 0.0014 GPa·K−1. The variation of the bulk modulus with pressure was also determined from the modelled elastic constants and compares very well with the EOS data. The reported Lehmann discontinuity, ∼220 km depth and pressure of 7.11Gpa, has an increase in the seismic compressional wave velocity, v p , of 7.14% using the data given for PREM (Anderson 1989). At a pressure of 7GPa any phase transition of MgSiO3 pyroxene would be between ortho (Pbca) and high-clino. We find the value of v p at 7GPa, for modelled orthoenstatite (Pbca), is 8.41 km·sec−1 and that for the modelled high-clino phase at 7GPa is 8.93 km·sec−1, giving a dv p /v p of 6.18%. Measurements of velocity and density profiles were used to describe the tidal and mean flow structure across and along a sill in Refugio Channel, a fjord-like inlet in Southern Chile (43.9°S). These are the first oceanographic measurements of any kind effected in Refugio Channel. Current profiles were obtained with a 307.2-kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler during two semidiurnal cycles along a repeated triangular circuit. Two along-channel transects formed the sides of the triangle that crossed the sill and were identified as the western and eastern transects. One cross-channel transect, the base of the triangle, was located on the seaward side of the sill. Density profiles were obtained at the corners of the triangle. The longitudinal mean flow in the western transect showed a two-layer exchange structure over the landward side of the sill. The structure of net seaward flow at the surface and landward flow at depth was disrupted by the sill in such a way that over the seaward side of the sill, only seaward flow was observed throughout the water column. This likely resulted from the blocking of landward net flow by the sill. In the eastern transect, two-layer exchange dominated over most of the transect and was consistent with the observed density profiles. Over the seaward side of the sill, a surface layer, ∼10m deep, flowed landward as a third layer. This feature should have been caused by river input further seaward (to the north) and produced a surface convergence region over the sill. In terms of tidal flows, the greatest tidal current amplitudes were 40cm s−1 over the sill as the flow accelerated through the reduced cross-sectional area of the channel. Near-surface flow convergences were identified over both along-channel transects.  相似文献
