Road instability along the Jerash–Amman highway was assessed using the weighted overlay method in Geographic Information System environment. The landslide susceptibility map was developed from nine contributing parameters. The map of landslide susceptibility was classified into five zones: very low (very stable), low (stable), moderate (moderately stable), high (unstable), and very high (highly unstable). The very high susceptibility and high susceptibility zones covered 15.14% and 31.81% of the study area, respectively. The main factors that made most parts of study area prone to landslides include excessive drainage channels, road cuts, and unfavorable rock strata such as marl and friable sandstone intercalated with clay and highly fractured limestone. Fracture zones are a major player in land instability. The moderate and high susceptibility zones are the most common in urban (e.g., Salhoub and Gaza camp) and agricultural areas. About 34% of the urban areas and 28.82% of the agricultural areas are characterized by the high susceptibility zone. Twenty percent of the Jerash–Amman highway length and 58% of the overall highway length are located in the very high susceptibility zone. The landslide susceptibility map was validated by the recorded landslides. More than 80 of the inventoried landslides are in unstable zones, which indicate that the selected causative factors are relevant and the model performs properly.  相似文献

Among experts in the field, there is general agreement that land degradation/conservation is a matter of life or death to hundreds of millions of people. There is general agreement too that in spite of the great efforts being made to combat desertification in the last 10 years, the problem is growing worse every day. On the other hand the technology and know-how to deal with all sorts of land degradation problems is available everywhere in abundance. Why then do we in the developing world, the most affected by the problem, seem handicapped or not able to deal effectively with it? What do we really lack? Do we lack the knowledge, the experience, the money or do we lack the will to live? This paper, while trying to give at least partial answers to all those questions, assumes that the right way of thinking in dealing with resources degradation is the most serious thing we are lacking. With some examples from Egypt and other developing countries, the paper will point to some aspects that may constitute part of the conceptual framework that is required to save our world and to keep the forthcoming disasters at an acceptable level.  相似文献

Cracks in filter can develop as a result of earthquake deformations or post-construction settlement and in some cases cracks extended through both the core and filter. Hence, a test apparatus has been developed to investigate filter performance in the case of filter and core material cracking in the embankment dams. The apparatus allows testing of incomplete cylindrical test specimens of 10 cm diameter and height of 20 cm. If the filters work well and successfully, crack filling occur, also the flow rate decrease, and the head water pressure increase to the range of early pressure. In the failed filters case, the flow rate do not decrease and remain high, also a very low head water pressure take place. In this research, variations of pressure, fines contents of filter soils, compaction time, PI of the base material and amount of eroded materials was evaluated. Results showed that prime flow rate increased as hydraulic gradient increased, but decreased in a little time and reach to a stable value. Filter with 15% of non-plastic fine content, had ability to slump to fill the crack, but its coefficient of permeability decreased significantly, hence, cannot be used as a filter in embankment dams.  相似文献

The stratigraphic succession of the subsurface Pliocene-Quaternary post-rift megasequence in the north-central part of the Nile Delta includes the rock units; Kafr El-Sheikh Formation (Early-Middle Pliocene), El- Wastani Formation (Late Pliocene), Mit-Ghamr and Bilqas formations (Quaternary). These rock units were analyzed according to the sequence stratigraphic principles to construct their stratigraphic architecture and discuss the depositional events influencing their evolution. Accordingly, seven 3rd order depositional sequences were encountered, of which six 3rd order seismic depositional sequences (sequences 1–6) are found in the Early–Middle Pliocene Kafr El-Sheikh Formation, whereas sequence-7 includes the Quaternary rock units. Sequences 1 and 7 were further subdivided, on the basis of high-resolution sequence stratigraphy into 8 and 11 4th order subsequences respectively. The results of the sequence stratigraphic analyses suggested that the depositional evolution of the examined Pliocene-Quaternary megasequence represents a complete prograding depositional phase during the Nile Delta history. The lower part of Kafr El-Sheikh Formation (sequences 1, 2, 3 and 4) was deposited as a thick outer marine shelf succession over which the younger rock units were deposited. However, the depositional sequences 5 & 6 of Kafr El-Sheikh Formation and the lower parts of El-Wastani Formations may indicate a deposition within active prograding prodelta sub-aqueous deltaic-subenvironments. The upper parts of El-Wastani Formation were deposited as a constructive delta-front pushing its way northward. The Pleistocene Mit-Ghamr Formation was evolved as a direct result of a huge fluvial input, organized as coalescing laterally extensive sand-rich bars. These were laid-down by active fluvial distributary streams that dominated the delta plain as the final phases of the present deltaic subaqueous environments.  相似文献

The estimation of Euler pole parameters has always been an important issue in global tectonics and geodynamics studies. In addition, the increasing number of permanent GPS stations and the ease of access to their data, along with advances in computers, promise new methods and tools for the estimation and the quantitative analysis of Euler pole parameters. Therefore, we developed the Euler pole calculator software using a set of mathematical algorithms based on the model of tectonic plate motion on a spherical surface. The software is able to calculate the expected velocities for any points located on the earth’s surface given the relevant Euler pole parameters and to estimate the Euler pole parameters given the observed velocities of a set of sites located on the same tectonic plate. Mathematical algorithms and functions of the software are explained in detail.  相似文献

The drilled shafts have been widely used to support lateral loads (active load case) or as a means to stabilize an unstable slope (passive load case) due to their large lateral load resistance and structural capacity for shear and bending moments. However, there is a need to develop an analytical procedure that can use the actual measured deflection data of a drilled shaft subject to either active or passive load case to interpret the soil‐drilled shaft interaction behavior. The mathematical formulation and the accompanied numerical procedure based on the principle of superposition were developed in this paper to allow for deducing the relevant soil‐drilled shaft interaction behavior under the applied lateral load (i.e. net soil reaction force on the drilled shaft, the shear and bending moment in the shaft) from the measured deflection data. Both compatibility and force equilibrium conditions were utilized in formulating the mathematical equations for common single drilled shaft boundary conditions (free head and fixed bottom). The current application is limited to small deformation to meet the requirement that the drilled shaft responds in a linear elastic range. A total of three theoretical cases, along with two actual field cases, were used to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method and its engineering applications. We constrain holographic dark energy (HDE) with time varying gravitational coupling constant in the framework of the modified Friedmann equations using cosmological data from type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, cosmic microwave background radiation and X-ray gas mass fraction. Applying a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation, we obtain the best fit values of the model and cosmological parameters within 1σ confidence level (CL) in a flat universe as: $\varOmega_{b}h^{2}=0.0222^{+0.0018}_{-0.0013}$ , $\varOmega_{c}h^{2}=0.1121^{+0.0110}_{-0.0079}$ , $\alpha_{G}\equiv \dot{G}/(HG) =0.1647^{+0.3547}_{-0.2971}$ and the HDE constant $c=0.9322^{+0.4569}_{-0.5447}$ . Using the best fit values, the equation of state of the dark component at the present time w d0 at 1σ CL can cross the phantom boundary w=?1.  相似文献

We derive analytical expression for the velocity dispersion of galaxy clusters, using the statistical mechanical approach. We compare the observed velocity dispersion profiles for 20 nearby (z≤0.1) galaxy clusters with the analytical ones. It is interesting to find that the analytical results closely match with the observed velocity dispersion profiles only if the presence of the diffuse matter in clusters is taken into consideration. This takes us to introduce a new approach to detect the ratio of diffuse mass, M diff , within a galaxy cluster. For the present sample, the ratio f=M diff /M, where M the cluster’s total mass is found to has an average value of 45±12 %. This leads us to the result that nearly 45 % of the cluster mass is impeded outside the galaxies, while around 55 % of the cluster mass is settled in the galaxies.  相似文献
