Pre-Caledonian basement is exposed in three areas within the Irish orthotectonic Caledonides: 1. In northwest County Mayo the Erris Complex comprises the Annagh Division, which is largely Grenvillian but includes older gneisses, and the Inishkea Division, which is probably equivalent to the older Moines of Scotland. 2. In the northeast Ox Mountains, Rosses Point and Lough Derg inliers there is a granulite fades, dominantly metasedimentary basement which is probably late Grenville in age. 3. Laxfordian and probably older gneisses are seen in the Inishtrahull Platform northeast of Malin Head, County Donegal. In addition, some gneisses within the belt of ‘Connemara migmatites’ in south Connemara may be fragments of allochthonous basement and some high grade metamorphic rocks in the Tyrone Central inlier have been referred to as pre-Caledonian basement, but there is at present no conclusive support for these suggestions. The Ox Mountains succession seen in the Clew Bay region and the southwest and central Ox Mountains is probably not pre-Caledonian basement. Basement in the paratectonic Caledonides is confined to the Cadomian and possibly pre-Cadomian Rosslare Complex (older than 625 Ma) and the nearby late Precambrian (to early Cambrian ?) Cuilenstown Formation in southeast County Wexford. In addition, an unseen block of basement defined by magnetics immediately to the north of the Dingle peninsula of County Kerry is probably of Rosslare Complex affinity. Granulite facies xenoiiths recovered from volcanic rocks of Carboniferous age about 70 km to the west of Dublin, indicate the character of basement there, though its age is not proven. All contacts between basement and Lower Palaeozoic Caledonian cover in the orthotectonic Caledonides are synmetamorphic slide zones and faults and in the paratectonic Caledonides the contacts are either faults, which are often rooted in older mylonites, or are unexposed and presumed to be major structural breaks. 相似文献

The dimensions and organization of deltaic islands and channels dictate delta morphology. This study presents experimental results modelling deposition at a river mouth and flow bifurcation around delta islands. Mouth bar formation and channel bifurcation is achieved in a laboratory setting by alternating input of suspended load transport and bedload transport. These two modes of transport produce two characteristic deposits with different advection lengths. Suspended load transport creates a steep deposit far from the inlet, while bedload creates a low angle, levéed deposit near the inlet. This study found that flow bifurcations occur where the proximal and distal deposits encroach on one another; and determined that there is a relationship between the frequency of suspended load transport and the length to channel bifurcation. Frequent flooding causes shorter length to bifurcations, whereas infrequent flooding causes greater length to bifurcations. This work overturns the hitherto understood mechanism of bifurcation location as a function of only high-transport conditions. Deposits within caves are often used to interpret past landscape evolution and climate conditions. However, cave passage shapes also preserve information about past conditions. Despite the usefulness of passage shape, no previous models simulate cave cross-section evolution in a realistic manner. Here we develop a model for evolving cave passage cross-sections using a shear stress estimation algorithm and a shear stress erosion rule. Our model qualitatively duplicates observed cave passage shapes so long as erosion rates vary with shear stress, as in the case of transport limited dissolution or mechanical erosion. This result provides further evidence that erosion rates within caves are not typically limited by surface reaction rates, even though current speleogenesis models predict surface-rate limitation under most turbulent flow conditions. By adding sediment transport and alluviation to the model we successfully simulate paragenetic channels. Simulations duplicate the hypothesized dynamics of paragenesis, whereby: 1) the cross-section of a phreatic passage grows until shear stress is sufficiently reduced that alluviation occurs, 2) the floor of the passage becomes armored and erosion continues on the ceiling and walls, 3) negative feedback produces an equilibrium cross-sectional area such that shear stress is sufficient to transport incoming sediment. We derive an approximate scaling relationship that indicates that equilibrium paragenetic channel width scales with the square root of discharge, and weakly with the inverse of sediment supply. Simulations confirm this relationship and show that erosion mechanism, sediment size, and roughness are secondary controls. The inverse scaling of width with sediment supply in paragenetic channels contrasts with surface bedrock channels, which respond to larger sediment supplies by widening. Our model provides a first step in simulating cave cross-section evolution and points to the need for a better understanding of the dominant erosion mechanisms in soluble bedrock channels. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

E‐mobility has been gaining importance in recent years in Germany, with the National Platform for E‐mobility infrastructure in Germany is expected to change fast, therefore many charging stations will appear. These need to be managed, and the aim of this work is to explore how web applications could best support productivity and user experience in this context. We compared a text‐form‐based approach to a map‐based approach for the addition and update of locations and chargepoints. We found that the map‐based approach yields better learning effects and offers a better compromise between pragmatic and hedonic properties. The results are useful for a better understanding of the impact of interactive maps on work and user experience in the e‐mobility domain and beyond. 相似文献

Alkaline soils occupy approximately 5 % of the Earth’s land surface (7 million km), and this may increase due to the global trend towards increasing desertification, yet the extent to which these soils modulate carbon dynamics on regional and global scales is inadequately studied and poorly understood. Railroad Valley (RRV) playa (Nevada, USA) is a semi-arid playa with highly alkaline soils (pH > 10) and no vegetation. The extreme, alkaline environment and absence of vascular vegetation make RRV an ideal site to investigate the role of physiochemical processes of soil-atmosphere CO2 exchange. Both field and laboratory investigations were conducted. This work shows how the atmospheric CO2 mixing ratio decreases at nighttime at RRV playa to a value well below the average global background CO2 concentration. Laboratory investigations using soil samples collected at RRV playa confirmed that CO2 uptake by RRV playa soils occurs when temperatures are decreased. Both field and laboratory studies suggest that the alkaline RRV soil acts as a CO2 reservoir during colder periods, such as at nighttime. These results highlight the importance of investigating carbon dynamics in previously understudied environments. Given how little information is available on the CO2 flux in desert and semi-arid alkaline ecosystems lacking vegetation, our findings draw attention to these environments as becoming increasingly important for carbon fluxes on regional and global scales. 相似文献

This paper investigates the increasing provision of ‘community benefits’ – i.e. financial or material benefits to communities affected by wind energy development – with a focus on on-shore wind projects in Wales. The paper argues that as community benefits are becoming more significant in scale, so pressures are mounting on what have hitherto been largely ad hoc arrangements for their disbursement. The paper finds that previously dominant definitions of communities as places directly affected by and within close proximity to wind farm development, are being challenged by the tendency to define ‘affected’ communities as broader entities characterised by more indirect and widely dispersed claims to benefit entitlement. This redefinition of the recipient community is causing conflict, much of it focused on debates about how community benefits should be governed. Evidence suggests that any re-scaling of relations around community benefits – from local compensation towards wider development goals – may be more consensually achieved in communities with previous experience in handling these funds, and where growing income streams allow multiple constituencies to be satisfied. 相似文献

China's coal industry has been plagued by fragmentation among thousands of producers, low productivity, environmental damage, and high accident rates. Coal-industry reforms have sought a “strategic westward movement” through which to achieve resource consolidation under larger firms and upgraded production in northern and western China. This article examines Ordos Municipality and Yulin Municipality to assess the role of differently scaled political and economic processes that have driven a regional coal boom.
