Surface samples of peridotites and hornblendite mylonites from St. Paul's Rocks, and dredge samples from the flanks of the massif, have been analyzed for Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic ratios and Rb, Sr, and REE concentrations. This data, coupled with previous K and REE data, are used to develop a self-consistent model for the genesis of these ultramafic rocks. This model involves metasomatism of an ocean island-type mantle about 155 m.y. ago by a strongly light-REE-enriched metasomatic fluid, probably derived from the same mantle. This metasomatism produced light-REE-enriched materials which were isotopically homogeneous on a small scale (100 m), and isotopically heterogeneous on a large (km) scale. The geochemical relationships between the peridotites and the hornblendites were established by metamorphic equilibration on a relatively small scale (<10 m). The average mantle produced by these events is characterized by87Sr/86Sr=0.7034,143Nd/144Nd=0.51291,206Pb/204Pb=19.33 and 207/204=15.63. An alkali basalt which postdates the mylon-itization of the ultramafic massif has an isotopic character which is identical to the average ultramafic massif; it also lies on the five-dimensional isotopic mantle plane of Zindler et al. (1982). With respect to major elements, trace elements, and Sr, Nd and Pb isotopes, the average ultramafic rock of the St. Paul's massif is an ideal candidate for a mantle source from which alkali basalts can be derived by partial melting; the St. Paul's massif is in fact the first such example of an ultramafic rock which meets all the requirements to be an alkali basalt source.  相似文献

The waters of Naples Bay, Florida, and associated waterways were monitored for potentially pathogenic bacteria, specificallyVibrio cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, Salmonella, andPseudomonas aeruginosa. Ten to twelve stations were sampled over a period of eleven months.Vibrio cholerae was recovered in 33.6% of the 116 total samples andSalmonella in 28.4% of the samples. Twenty years ago, Ashworth et al. (1988) offered a distinctive and innovative interpretation of a neglected aspect of the urban scene: the red light district. Focusing on the location of female prostitution in a series of Western European cities, their paper suggested that the geographies of sex work are revealing of some of the ‘less obvious’ social and political processes that shape urban space. Here, we revisit Ashworth et al’s paper in the light of subsequent developments in the organisation of commercial sex as well as the study of sexuality and space. Noting important continuities as well as major shifts in the location of sex work, with a significant shift to off-street forms of sex working having occurred, this paper argues that some of the ideas in Ashworth et al’s paper remain highly pertinent, but others appear in need of updating. In particular, we stress the importance of focusing on men as both clients and workers within the sex industry, and flag up a number of connections that might be made with the emerging literatures on the geographies of sex itself. We hence conclude by considering Ashworth et al’s paper as an important early intervention in debates surrounding the relations of sexuality and space, albeit one in which questions of gender, embodiment, and sexual desire remained largely unexplored.  相似文献

Elkhorn Slough is a shallow, tidally forced estuary that is directly connected to Monterey Bay. It is ebb-dominated and, due to continued erosion, the tidal prism has tripled over the past 40 years. Water level measurements at four locations are used to examine tidal and nontidal oscillations in Elkhorn Slough. The tidal response of Elkhorn Slough differs from that of Monterey Bay primarily due to the generation of a relatively large number of shallow-water tidal constituents that are due to tidal distortion caused by friction along the bottom and lateral boundaries, intertidal storage, and nonlinear advection. The shallow-water constituents range from 3 to almost 15 cycles per day (cpd) and include a rich variety of overtides and compound tides, whose amplitudes generally increase toward the head of the slough. The tidal harmonics are seasonally dependent, with lower amplitudes during the fall and winter and higher amplitudes in summer. The tidal constituents were examined using two types of spectral decomposition, the conventional power spectrum and the more recent Hilbert spectrum. Unlike the power spectrum, the Hilbert spectrum does not reveal any harmonic structure in the data. Energy associated with tidal distortion in this case appears to be broadly distributed across the spectral continuum. At least four nontidal oscillations occur in Elkhorn Slough with frequencies of 26.0, 39.7, 52.7, and 66.9 cpd. The Hilbert spectrum reveals maxima at 26, 39.7, and 66.9 cpd, but not at 52.7 cpd, suggesting that it is harmonically related to the oscillation at 26.0 cpd. The nontidal oscillations fall into the range of frequencies associated with the natural oscillations of Monterey Bay. However, evolutionary power spectra indicate that they appear to be permanent features of the system and thus are not necessarily consistent with seiche-like oscillations that are often transient and subject to damping. These oscillations could be caused by several factors including edge waves along the coast of Monterey Bay, long-period surface waves of atmospheric origin that enter the bay from offshore, or breaking internal waves in and around the Monterey Submarine Canyon. In conclusion, detailed hydrodynamic models are needed to provide a better understanding of how tidal harmonics are generated and preserved in Elkhorn Slough, and to determine the origin of the natural oscillations in Monterey Bay.  相似文献

We discuss scalar similarities and dissimilarities based on analysis of the dissipation terms in the variance budget equations, considering the turbulent kinetic energy and the variances of temperature, specific humidity and specific CO\(_2\) content. For this purpose, 124 high-frequency sampled segments are selected from the Boundary Layer Late Afternoon and Sunset Turbulence experiment. The consequences of dissipation similarity in the variance transport are also discussed and quantified. The results show that, for the convective atmospheric surface layer, the non-dimensional dissipation terms can be expressed in the framework of Monin–Obukhov similarity theory and are independent of whether the variable is temperature or moisture. The scalar similarity in the dissipation term implies that the characteristic scales of the atmospheric surface layer can be estimated from the respective rate of variance dissipation, the characteristic scale of temperature, and the dissipation rate of temperature variance.  相似文献

We present a general compositional formulation using multi-point flux mixed finite element (MFMFE) method on general hexahedral grids. The mixed finite element framework allows for local mass conservation, accurate flux approximation, and a more general treatment of boundary conditions. The multi-point flux inherent in MFMFE scheme allows the usage of a full permeability tensor. The proposed formulation is an extension of single and two-phase flow formulations presented by Wheeler and Yotov, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 44(5), 2082–2106 (35) with similar convergence properties. Furthermore, the formulation allows for black oil, single-phase and multi-phase incompressible, slightly and fully compressible flow models utilizing the same design for different fluid systems. An accurate treatment of diffusive/dispersive fluxes owing to additional velocity degrees of freedom is also presented. The applications areas of interest include gas flooding, CO 2 sequestration, contaminant removal, and groundwater remediation.  相似文献

We consider an iterative scheme for solving a coupled geomechanics and flow problem in a fractured poroelastic medium. The fractures are treated as possibly non-planar interfaces. Our iterative scheme is an adaptation due to the presence of fractures of a classical fixed stress-splitting scheme. We prove that the iterative scheme is a contraction in an appropriate norm. Moreover, the solution converges to the unique weak solution of the coupled problem.  相似文献

The availability of accurate rainfall data with high spatial resolution, especially in vast watersheds with low density of ground-measurements, is critical for planning and management of water resources and can increase the quality of the hydrological modeling predictions. In this study, we used two classical methods: the optimal interpolation and the successive correction method (SCM), for merging ground-measurements and satellite rainfall estimates. Cressman and Barnes schemes have been used in the SCM in order to define the error covariance matrices. The correction of bias in satellite rainfall data has been assessed by using four different algorithms: (1) the mean bias correction, (2) the regression equation, (3) the distribution transformation, and (4) the spatial transformation. The satellite rainfall data were provided by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, over the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest. Performances of the two merging data techniques are compared, qualitatively, by visual inspection and quantitatively, by a statistical analysis, collected from January 1999 to December 2010. The computation of the statistical indices shows that the SCM, with the Cressman scheme, provides slightly better results.  相似文献
