Over the past 60 years, road deicers (i.e. road salt) have been applied to roadways in high latitudes to improve road conditions in winter weather. However, the dissolution of road deicers in highway runoff creates waters with high concentrations of sodium, which can mobilize soil metals via soil cation‐exchange reactions. While several studies have detailed the interactions of road salt‐rich solutions and surface and ground waters, less attention has been given to how local hydrologic flowpaths can impact the delivery of these solutions to near‐road soils. Between 2013 and 2014, soil water samples were collected from a roadside transect of lysimeter nests in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (USA). Soil water samples were analysed for metal concentrations and resulting data used to examine cation dynamics. While patterns in soil water calcium and magnesium concentrations follow patterns in soil water sodium concentrations, additional processes influence patterns in soil water potassium concentrations. Specifically, we observe the highest calcium and magnesium concentrations in the deepest lysimeters, suggesting divalent cations are mobilized to, and potentially accumulate in, deeper soil horizons. In contrast, soil water potassium concentrations do not follow this pattern. Additionally, in all examined elements (Ca, Mg, K, Na, and Cl), the timing of concentration peaks appears be influenced by a combination of both distance from the roadside and sampling depth. These relationships not only suggest that multiple soil water flowpaths interact with our study transect but also confirm that road salt plumes persist and migrate following the road salting season. Characterizing the interactions of sodium‐rich solutions and roadside soil cation pools clarifies our understanding of metal dynamics in the roadside environment. A deeper understanding of these processes is necessary to effectively restore and manage watersheds as high total dissolved solid solutions (e.g. road deicing melt, unconventional natural gas brines, and marginal irrigation water) continue to influence hydrological systems. The distribution of stably trapped plasma is determined as a function of equatorial geocentric distance, R. Observed Pi2 micropulsation periods and the magnitudes of their associated magnetic bays, measured by the auroral electrojet index, AE, are used in determining this distribution. Plasma density is found to vary inversely as approximately the sixth power of R. When Pi2 period-AE relations are studied for varying time lags, the pulsation periods are found to define prolonged intervals of abnormal AE levels. Thus the periods may be potentially useful in forecasting geomagnetic disturbances or abnormally quiet intervals. A qualitative physical model is proposed to explain the observational relations.  相似文献

Periplatform surface sediments were studied for carbonate mineralogy in conjunction with analyses of the water column for carbonate chemistry on the eastern Northern Nicaragua Rise (NNR) in the Caribbean Sea. The results show a strong correspondence between variations and disappearance, with increasing water depth, of metastable carbonate minerals (fine aragonite and magnesian calcite) and their respective saturation levels in the overlying waters. Similar correspondence between variations in sediment proportions of fine aragonite and magnesian calcite and their respective saturation levels has previously been established in the Bahamas. There are, however, significant differences between the two areas. The sharp decrease in aragonite content and the measured aragonite saturation level occur at 4000 m in the Bahamas, compared to 1800 m on the eastern NNR. In both areas, magnesian calcite minima correspond to the in situ PCO2 maxima in the water column. The magnesian calcite minimum, however, is at 950 m in the Bahamas and 750 m on the eastern NNR. Magnesian calcite disappears in the Bahamas at 3800 m and at 2000 m on the eastern NNR. These results demonstrate the importance of the influence of overlying water chemistry on the preservation of metastable carbonate minerals in off-bank periplatform sediments, and they clearly demonstrate the difference in terms of carbonate preservation between the poorly ventilated waters of the Caribbean Sea and the well-oxygenated waters of the adjacent Atlantic Ocean. They also open the possibility of obtaining paleoceanographic information on the depth of the CO2 maximum (O2 minimum) and its separation from the aragonite saturation depth in at least some areas.  相似文献

Protoliths of highly metamorphosed gneisses from the Erzgebirge are deduced from the morphology, age and chemistry of zircons as well as from whole rock geochemistry and are compared with lower-grade rocks of Lusatia. Gneisses with similar structural appearance and/or geochemical pattern may have quite different protoliths. The oldest rocks in the Erzgebirge are paragneisses representing meta-greywackes and meta-conglomerates. The youngest group of zircon of meta-greywackes that did not undergo Pb loss represents the youngest igneous component for source rocks (about 575 Ma). Similar ages and zircon morphology reflect the subordinate formation of new zircon grains or only zircon rims in the augengneiss from Bärenstein and Wolkenstein, which probably represent metamorphic equivalents to Lower Cambrian two-mica granodiorites from Lusatia. Bulk rock chemistry, intense fracturing and high U and Th concentrations of zircons suggest deformation-induced and fluid-enhanced recrystallisation of zircon grains. Temperatures during tectonic overprinting—too low to reset zircon ages—indicate mid- or upper crustal levels for shearing recorded in these augengneisses. Lower Cambrian (~540 Ma) granodiorites are widespread in Lusatia but are exclusively represented by the Freiberg gneiss dome in the Eastern Erzgebirge. Ordovician protolith ages were recorded by zircons from the augengneisses of the Reitzenhain–Catherine dome and the Schwarzenberg dome (Western Erzgebirge) documenting significant regional differences between the eastern and the western Erzgebirge (~540 vs. ~490 Ma). In the Western Erzgebirge, most meta-volcanic rocks (muscovite gneisses) and meta-granites (mainly red augengneisses) yield Ordovician zircon ages, whereas in the Eastern part, similar rocks mainly recorded Lower Cambrian protolith ages. Zircon overprinting was highest within discrete tectonic zones where the combination of fluid infiltration and deformation induced variable degrees of recrystallisation and formation of a new augengneiss structure. Variable degrees of Pb loss caused age shifts that do not correspond to changes in zircon morphology but may be associated with U and Th enrichments. Major changes in bulk rock composition appear to be restricted to discrete zones and to (U)HP nappes, whereas gneisses with a MP–MT metamorphic overprint basically show no geochemical modifications.  相似文献

In this paper we report a study – based on simulated data – performed to assess the level of accuracy needed in the process of calibrating the output of the VIRGO gravitational wave detector. A simple algorithm searching for signals from coalescing binaries is applied on data containing simulated signals and noise. Two kinds of calibration errors are then assumed to affect the data. The sensitivity of the algorithm to these errors is evaluated, both in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio and the estimation of the signal arrival time.  相似文献

Research aiming to reduce the vulnerability of agricultural systems to climate variability and change requires practical appraisal of their climatic exposure. We propose a method to map local climatic conditions over a given period to a set of productivity and management-related indicators that are specific to grassland-based livestock systems. Our method based on a reference system balances herbage production and feed requirements over a long period (≥ 30 years) and provides boundaries for productivity-defined seasons and indicators for surplus or shortage of herbage at seasonal and annual scales. This exposure-assessment method was applied to five climatically contrasting locations in south-western France. The trends and variability of the exposure indicators were analysed for past (1980–2010) and future (2035–2065) periods, considering the A1B scenario of the IPCC. Despite high year-to-year variability and the heterogeneity of the climatic situations studied, we show that climate change can modify the boundaries of productivity-defined seasons and seasonal herbage surplus or shortage. Moreover, the exposure indicators succeed in detecting climate-induced changes and distinguishing situations where a classical exposure indicator, such as annual forage production, could not. The exposure indicators highlight the forage productivity and the timing of production associated with local climatic conditions. These features fit the temporal scale at which farmers consider farm management and are highly suitable for identifying adaptation strategies that reduce the vulnerability of grassland-based livestock systems.  相似文献

The energy balance and ablation of Glaciar Lengua were investigated during the austral summer of 1999/2000. Glaciar Lengua is located in Patagonia, in the southernmost Andes of Chile (53°S), within an extremely maritime climate. The aim of this study was to gain insight into current energy fluxes at this location and to evaluate how the energy fluxes depend on meteorological variables. From February to April 2000 an automated weather station was operated on Glaciar Lengua. Ablation was measured repeatedly at stakes during the same period. The point energy balance was calculated using the bulk approach formulation. The effective roughness length was adjusted in order to calibrate the model to the measured ablation. It was revealed that sensible heat transfer is the major contribution to the energy balance adding 54% of the energy available for melt. Net radiation contributes only 35% to the overall energy balance. Minor contributors are the latent heat flux (7%) and the heat flux by precipitation (4%). The net radiation shows little variance from day to day. Cross-correlations of the daily mean values of the energy fluxes derived from the energy balance model and meteorological variables reveal that air temperature and wind speed are the key factors controlling the summer energy balance in the ablation area. Melt derived from a multiple regression model based on these two variables correlates with computed melt with a correlation coefficient of 0.92. From the measured ablation, a summer-time degree-day factor of 7.6 mm·°C− 1 was derived for the ablation area.  相似文献
