Static elasticity measurements at high pressures were carried out on oriented fluorapatite single crystals, some of which contained oriented amorphous ion tracks (ITs) implanted with relativistic Au ions (2.2 GeV) from the UNILAC linear accelerator at GSI, Darmstadt. High-pressure experiments on irradiated and non-irradiated crystal sections were carried out in diamond-anvil high-pressure cells under hydrostatic conditions. In situ single-crystal diffraction was performed to determine the high-precision lattice parameters, simultaneously monitoring the widths of X-ray diffraction Bragg peaks. High-pressure Raman spectra were analyzed with respect to the frequency shift and widths of bands, which correspond to the Raman-active vibrational modes of the phosphate tetrahedra. Swift heavy ion irradiation was found to induce anisotropic lattice expansion and tensile strain within the host lattice dependent on the ion-track orientation. The relatively low Grüneisen parameter for the ν 1b(A g) mode, which has been assigned to originate from the volume fraction of the amorphous tracks, and the γ(ν 1a)/γ(ν 1b) ratio reveals compressive strain on the amorphous ITs. The comparative compressibilities for the host lattice reveal approximately equivalent bulk moduli, but significantly different pressure derivatives (K T = 88.4 ± 0.7 GPa, ∂K/∂P = 6.3 ± 0.3 for non-irradiated, K T = 90.0 ± 1.7 GPa, ∂K/∂P = 3.8 ± 0.5 for irradiated samples). The axial compressibility moduli β −1 reveal significant differences, which correlate with the ion-track orientation [ba - 1 beta_{a}^{ - 1} = 240 ± 5 GPa, bc - 1 beta_{c}^{ - 1} = 361 ± 14 GPa, ∂( ba - 1 ) left( {beta_{a}^{ - 1} } right) /∂P = 11.3 ± 1.2, ∂( bc - 1 ) left( {beta_{c}^{ - 1} } right) /∂P = 11.6 ± 3.4 for irradiation ⊥(100); 246 ± 9 GPa, 364 ± 57 GPa, 9.5 ± 2.9, 14.7 ± 14.1 for irradiation ⊥(001), 230.7 ± 3.6 GPa, 373.5 ± 5.1 GPa, 19.2 ± 1.4, 20.1 ± 1.8 for no irradiation]. Line widths of XRD Bragg peaks in irradiated apatites confirm the strain of the host lattice, which appears to decrease with increasing pressure. By contrast, the bandwidths of Raman modes increase with pressure, and this is attributed to increasing strain gradients on the length scale of the short-range order. The investigations reveal considerable deviatoric stress on the [100]-oriented tracks due to the anisotropic elasticity, while the compression is uniform for the directions perpendicular to the tracks, which are aligned parallel to the c-axis. This difference might be considered to control the diffusion properties related to the annealing kinetics and its observed anisotropy, and hence to cause potential pressure effects on track-fading rates. 相似文献

A 0.4 m diameter (1:30th scale) horizontal axis marine current turbine (MCT) was tested in a circulating water channel. The turbine performance and wake characteristics were determined over a range of flow speeds and rotor thrust coefficients. Measurements of the water surface elevation profiles indicated increasing variation and surface turbulence with increasing flow speeds. Blockage-type effects (where the measured point velocity was greater than the inflow velocity) occurred around the sides of the rotor for all flow speeds. Although the effects were exaggerated at model scale, it is expected that reasonable variations in water level and flow velocity could also occur over a full scale MCT array. 相似文献

We report on sorting of small grained material under simulated martian conditions in order to better understand the nature of particle movement in the acquisition-to-analysis chain for future martian missions. We find that triboelectric charging when material is sieved is a major phenomenon that has to be understood and mitigation strategies explored in order to be able to successfully move particles under these types of conditions while minimizing cross sample talk. In different experimental set-ups, we have observed such phenomena as caking of the sieve, adhesion of particles to hardware, clodding of dry fines, and electrostatic repulsion. These phenomena occur when different experimental testing is performed with varied configurations and environmental conditions. Identifying these electrostatic effects can help us understand potential bias in the analytical instruments and to define the best operational protocols to collect samples on the surface of Mars. These experiments demonstrate the need for end-to-end system testing under the most realistic environmental conditions and platforms before mission configurations can be demonstrated before launch. 相似文献

A theoretical model for gas adsorption-induced coal swelling 总被引:6,自引:2,他引:6
Swelling and shrinkage (volumetric change) of coal during adsorption and desorption of gas is a well-known phenomenon. For coalbed methane recovery and carbon sequestration in deep, unminable coal beds, adsorption-induced coal volumetric change may cause significant reservoir permeability change. In this work, a theoretical model is derived to describe adsorption-induced coal swelling at adsorption and strain equilibrium. This model applies an energy balance approach, which assumes that the surface energy change caused by adsorption is equal to the elastic energy change of the coal solid. The elastic modulus of the coal, gas adsorption isotherm, and other measurable parameters, including coal density and porosity, are required in this model. Results from the model agree well with experimental observations of swelling. It is shown that the model is able to describe the differences in swelling behaviour with respect to gas species and at very high gas pressures, where the coal swelling ratio reaches a maximum then decreases. Furthermore, this model can be used to describe mixed-gas adsorption induced-coal swelling, and can thus be applied to CO2-enhanced coalbed methane recovery. 相似文献

Presence of springs in karst terranes provides a unique opportunity to study the rather complex, multi-porosity, and multi-permeability
system. When springs are used to evaluate the integrity of storage facilities for hazardous materials or waste disposal facilities
constructed in karst areas, the spatial heterogeneity of karst aquifers makes intra-spring comparisons preferred statistical
tests. One of the commonly used statistical tests is water quality control procedure such as Shewhart-CUSUM control charts.
Appropriate application of the water quality control procedure to intra-spring monitoring depends on whether the assumptions
can be justified about the aquifer that drains to the spring and the dataset collected at the spring. Violation of the assumptions
would render the statistical tests invalid, which may result in a failure of the groundwater monitoring program. In intra-spring
monitoring, it is the temporal variations of water quality at a karst spring need to be addressed, whereas the water quality
at the spring is closely associated with the characteristics of the aquifer. The example datasets presented in the paper indicate

In this paper, we characterize the morphology of the disk-integrated phase functions of satellites and rings around the giant planets of our solar system. We find that the shape of the phase function is accurately represented by a logarithmic model [Bobrov, M.S., 1970. Physical properties of Saturn's rings. In: Dollfus, A. (Ed.), Surfaces and Interiors of Planets and Satellites. Academic, New York, pp. 376-461]. For practical purposes, we also parametrize the phase curves by a linear-exponential model [Kaasalainen, S., Muinonen, K., Piironen, J., 2001. Comparative study on opposition effect of icy solar system objects. Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer 70, 529-543] and a simple linear-by-parts model [Lumme, K., Irvine, W.M., 1976. Photometry of Saturn's rings. Astronomical Journal 81, 865-893], which provides three morphological parameters: the amplitude A and the half-width at half-maximum (HWHM) of the opposition surge, and the slope S of the linear part of the phase function at larger phase angles.Our analysis demonstrates that all of these morphological parameters are correlated with the single-scattering albedos of the surfaces.By taking more accurately into consideration the finite angular size of the Sun, we find that the Galilean, Saturnian, Uranian and Neptunian satellites have similar HWHMs (?0.5°), whereas they have a wide range of amplitudes A. The Moon has the largest HWHM (∼2°). We interpret that as a consequence of the “solar size bias”, via the finite angular size of the Sun which varies dramatically from the Earth to Neptune. By applying a new method that attempts to morphologically deconvolve the phase function to the solar angular size, we find that icy and young surfaces, with active resurfacing, have the smallest values of A and HWHM, whereas dark objects (and perhaps older surfaces) such as the Moon, Nereid and Saturn's C ring have the largest A and HWHM.Comparison between multiple objects also shows that solar system objects belonging to the same planet have comparable opposition surges. This can be interpreted as a “planetary environmental effect” that acts to locally modify the regolith and the surface properties of objects which are in the same environment. 相似文献

Stress relaxation experiments were performed on hot-pressed cylinders of synthetic, polycrystalline galena at temperatures of 500°, 600°, 700° and 800°C at atmospheric pressure after various levels of axial strain, in the range from 2% to 25%, had been imposed at a constant strain rate (?) of 3×10?4 s?1. For this study a new apparatus was built which can measure small changes in applied stress (σ), better than ±0.5 × 105 Pa, and which incorporates a facility whereby the composition of the test specimen can be fixed through equilibration with a gas atmosphere of controlled composition. Deformation mechanism maps constructed largely on theoretical grounds predict that, under the conditions studied here, high-temperature dislocation creep, for which ?∝σ5, gives way on lowering the applied stress to diffusion creep, for which ?∝σ. The experimental results agree in large measure with these theoretical predictions. However, it is not possible in this preliminary study to conclusively identify the dominant deformation mechanisms. 相似文献

We carried out a benthic survey and two experiments in runs at eight sites down the Kakanui River (South Island, New Zealand) during summer low flows, to investigate the interaction between nutrients, periphyton, and macro‐grazers. Benthic periphytic biomass was generally low (< 20 mg m‐2 chlorophyll a) at most sites, but high densities of macro‐grazers (mainly snails) were observed at six of the eight sites. Chlorophyll a and cellular P concentrations were generally higher on artificial substrates in the first‐ to third‐order tributaries, compared with downstream. Macro‐grazer densities (mainly snails) were also highest in the second‐ and third‐order tributaries. Enrichment of patches with N and P did not translate into significant increases in chlorophyll a concentrations. Instead there was a general increase in macro‐grazers, and an increase in the relative abundance of Cocconeis placentula. In a second experiment, the chlorophyll a level was five‐fold higher on the substrates where macro‐grazers were excluded and there was no significant response of chlorophyll a to nutrient addition on these substrates. On the grazed substrates, densities of snails and caddis‐larvae were two‐fold higher with N+P enrichment. These experiments provided evidence for a tight coupling between first and second trophic levels, and strong grazer control of periphyton, in this river. 相似文献

Primary sand and gravel deposits in Britain play an important role in preserving our cultural heritage and are also a valuable aggregate resource. While an understanding of the extrinsic properties of the soil archive (such as pH, redox, groundwater) can provide a firstorder assessment of the potential risk to any archaeologically sensitive deposits, we have very poor definition of spatial variations in the extrinsic properties of soil that influence archaeological preservation at a regional and national scale. Developments in digital geological mapping, remote sensing, and geochemical survey data undertaken by the British Geological Survey (BGS) have, however, significantly extended capabilities in this respect and can potentially be used to provide a primary assessment of the sensitivity of the present soil archive and the potential risk from changes to the soil process on cultural material in areas earmarked for aggregate extraction. Two of the major factors affecting archaeological preservation—soil acidification and groundwater—can be mapped or predicted at scales of better than 1:50,000 across increasingly large parts of the country using a combination of regional hydrogeological, geophysical, and geochemical data. Additional data from site investigations may further refine preservation potential as a function of changes in redox potential and acidity. These data, maps and models can be used to (1) better establish a baseline for archaeological preservation at a regional and national scale and (2) improve our understanding of how the physical and chemical properties of the near surface environment can be managed to sustainably preserve archaeological materials in areas impacted by sand and gravel extraction. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献
