A macroscopic transport model is developed, following the Taylor shear dispersion analysis procedure, for a 2D laminar shear flow between parallel plates possessing a constant specified concentration. This idealized geometry models flow with contaminant dissolution at pore-scale in a contaminant source zone and flow in a rock fracture with dissolving walls. We upscale a macroscopic transient transport model with effective transport coefficients of mean velocity, macroscopic dispersion, and first-order mass transfer rate. To validate the macroscopic model the mean concentration, covariance, and wall concentration gradient are compared to the results of numerical simulations of the advection–diffusion equation and the Graetz solution. Results indicate that in the presence of local-scale variations and constant concentration boundaries, the upscaled mean velocity and macrodispersion coefficient differ from those of the Taylor–Aris dispersion, and the mass transfer flux described by the first-order mass transfer model is larger than the diffusive mass flux from the constant wall. In addition, the upscaled first-order mass transfer coefficient in the macroscopic model depends only on the plate gap and diffusion coefficient. Therefore, the upscaled first-order mass transfer coefficient is independent of the mean velocity and travel distance, leading to a constant pore-scale Sherwood number of 12. By contrast, the effective Sherwood number determined by the diffusive mass flux is a function of the Peclet number for small Peclet number, and approaches a constant of 10.3 for large Peclet number. 相似文献

Throughout its geomorphological history the South Pennine valley of Longdendale has been especially prone to landsliding and some ten landslide areas have been identified. These prove on analysis to be bedding plane slides with a strong degree of translation but often exhibiting non-circular rotational elements as well. Instability in the lower slopes has often led to cambering and valley bulging so that the slopes become deformed and slump earth flows developed at some sites. Several different types of landslide are examined in detail and by means of pollen analysis the slides are dated from the early postglacial to at least as recently as two thousand years B.P. although it has not yet been possible to decide when these slides started. The causes of sliding are identified, and comments are made upon.
- (a) The location of slip surfaces–which are frequently at the base of the Grindslow Shales above a sandstone aquifer.
- (b) The geomorphic processes which built up high pore-water pressures and steep pressure gradients in the past.
- (c) The effects of sliding on the development of hillslopes in the post-glacial period.

Exchange-mineral equilibria with Al and Fe3+ aqueous chloride solutions (aq.), Andr + AlCl aq 3 = FeCl aq 3 + Gros, (1) Psc + AlCl aq 3 = FeCl aq 3 + Czo, (2) were studied under the following experimental conditions: 500°;C and 580°;C and 1 and 2 kbar, respectively, with an overall concentration of metals in the aqueous solutions of about 0.5 M and pH 3. The mixing functions of the components in garnet and epidote were calculated from the experimental data. Thermodynamic treatment of experimental evidence for reaction (1) led to the conclusion that, within the accuracy of experiment, garnet in the andradite-grossularite series was an ideal solid solution. However, epidote solid solution markedly departed from the ideal, as was shown by concentration and pressure-temperature (PT) dependencies of Gibbs's molar excess energies and by mixing-volume concentration dependence. 相似文献

Seasonal hydrological forecasts, or outlooks, can potentially provide water managers with estimates of river flows and water resources for a lead time of several months ahead. An experimental modelling tool for national hydrological outlooks has been developed which combines a hydrological model estimate of sub‐surface water storage across Britain with a range of seasonal rainfall forecasts to provide estimates of area‐wide hydrological conditions up to a few months ahead. The link is made between a deficit in sub‐surface water storage and a requirement for additional rainfall over subsequent months to enable sub‐surface water storage and river flow to return to mean monthly values. The new scheme is assessed over a recent period which includes the termination of the drought that affected much of Britain in the first few months of 2012. An illustration is provided of its use to obtain return‐period estimates of the ‘rainfall required’ to ease drought conditions; these are well in excess of 200 years for several regions of the country, for termination within a month of 1 April 2012, and still exceed 40 years for termination within three months. National maps of sub‐surface water storage anomaly show for the first time the current spatial variability of drought severity. The observation that the results of line and point counting analyses of the particle size distribution of the same sand are different leads to the conclusion that these results are biased by the sampling technique1 . The influence of the currently used sampling techniques on the numerical results of a particle size analysis is discussed. Evidence is presented to show that the use of line and point counting methods in granulometric analysis leads to results in which the influence of the sampling method is so strong that the practical value of these techniques is doubtful. It is therefore considered advisable to discontinue line and point counting techniques in granulometric analysis in favour of ribbon sampling methods. 相似文献

AbstractWater balance studies with stable water isotopes have rarely been conducted in remote and tropical wetland areas. As such, little is known regarding the water balance and groundwater–surface water interaction in the Pantanal, one of the largest and most pristine wetlands in the world. We applied MINA TrêS, a water balance model utilizing stable water isotopes (δ18O, δ2H) and chloride (Cl-) to assess the dry-season hydrological processes controlling groundwater–surface water interactions and the water balance of six floodplain lakes in the northern Pantanal, Brazil. Qualitatively, all lakes exhibited similarity in hydrological controls. Quantitatively, they differed significantly due to morphological differences in controlling groundwater inflow and lake volume. Our approach is readily transferable to other remote and tropical wetland systems with minimal data input requirements, which is useful in regions with sparse hydrometric monitoring.

The Tan–Lu Fault Zone (TLFZ) extends in a NNE–SSW direction for more than 2000 km in Eastern China. It has been considered either as a major sinistral strike-slip fault, as a suture zone or as a normal fault. We have conducted a structural analysis of the southern segment of this fault zone (STLFZ) in the Anhui Province. The ages (Triassic to Palaeocene) of the formations affected by the faults have been re-appraised taking into account recent stratigraphical studies to better constraint the ages of the successive stages of the kinematics of the STLFZ. Subsequently, the kinematics of the faults is presented in terms of strain/stress fields by inversion of the striated fault set data. Finally, the data are discussed in the light of the results obtained by previous workers.We propose the following history of the STLFZ kinematics during the Mesozoic. At the time of collision, a NNE orientated Tan–Lu margin probably connected two margins located north of the Dabie and Sulu collision belts. During the Middle–Late Triassic, the SCB has been obliquely subducted below the NCB along this margin which has acted as a compressional transfer zone between the Dabie and Sulu continental subduction zones. The STLFZ has been initiated during the Early Jurassic and has acted as a sinistral transform fault during the Jurassic, following which the NCB/SCB collision stopped. A NW-trending extension related to metamorphic domes was active during the basal Early Cretaceous ( 135–130 Ma); it has been followed by a NW–SE compression and a NE–SW tension during the middle–late Early Cretaceous ( 127 to 105 Ma, possibly 95 Ma); at that time the TLFZ was a sinistral transcurrent fault within the eastern part of the Asian continent.
