Oligocene–Miocene chronostratigraphic correlations within the Paratethys domain are still highly controversial. This study focuses on the late Early Miocene of the Swiss and S-German Molasse Basin (Late Burdigalian, Ottnangian–Karpatian). Previous studies have published different chronologies for this time interval that is represented by the biostratigraphically well constrained Upper Marine Molasse (OMM, lower and middle Ottnangian), Upper Brackish Molasse (OBM, Grimmelfingen and Kirchberg Formations, middle and upper Ottnangian to lower Karpatian, MN 4a–MN 4b) and Upper Freshwater Molasse (OSM, Karpatian–Badenian, MN 5). Here, we suggest a new chronostratigraphic framework, based on integrated magneto-litho-biostratigraphic studies on four sections and three boreholes. Our data indicate that the OBM comprises chrons 5D.1r and 5Dn (Grimmelfingen Fm), chron 5Cr (lower Kirchberg Fm) and the oldest part of chron 5Cn.3n (upper Kirchberg Fm). The OSM begins during chron 5Cn.3n, continues through 5Cn, and includes a long reversed segment that can be correlated to chron 5Br. The OMM-OSM transition was completed at 16.0 Ma in the Swiss Molasse Basin, while the OBM-OSM changeover ended at 16.6 Ma in the S-German Molasse Basin. As the lower Kirchberg Fm represents a facies of the Ottnangian, our data suggest that the Ottnangian–Karpatian boundary in the Molasse Basin is approximately at 16.8 Ma, close to the 5Cr–5Cn.3n magnetic reversal, and thus 0.4 Myr younger than the inferred age of 17.2 Ma used in recent Paratethys time scales. Notably, this would not be problematic for the Paratethys stratigraphy, because chron 5Cr is mainly represented by a sedimentation gap in the Central Paratethys. We also realise, however, that additional data is still required to definitely solve the age debate concerning this intriguing time interval in the North Alpine Foreland Basin. Thomson scattering is often invoked to explain broad wing features that are seen in various objects including active galactic nuclei and symbiotic stars. Despite the wavelength-independent scattering cross-section of Thomson scattering, the line flux may exhibit wavelength-dependent linear degree of polarization, because various parts of emission wings are contributed by photons with different scattering numbers. Specifically, more scattered and hence more weakly polarized photons tend to fill the farther wing parts from the line centre, while the neighbourhood of the line centre is dominated by less-scattered photons with higher degree of polarization. Using a Monte Carlo technique, we investigate the polarization structure of Thomson-scattered line radiation. A detailed analysis of polarization structure formation is conducted by investigating the dependence of the polarization and profile width on the scattering number for various finite electron scattering slabs. Significantly varying degree of polarization is obtained when the scattering medium has Thomson optical depth  τTh≥ 1  . We present our high-resolution spectrum of the symbiotic star V1016 Cyg obtained with the Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) in order to fit the broad profile around Hα by electron scattering wings adopting an oblate spheroidal geometry with Thomson optical depth  τTh= 0.5  and electron temperature   T e= 6.2 × 104  K  . Local maxima in the linear degree of polarization of Thomson-scattered line radiation are expected to appear in the spectral regions characterized by the average scattering number ≃1.  相似文献

It is well established that orbital scale sea-level changes generated larger transport of sediments into the deep-sea during the last glacial maximum than the Holocene. However, the response of sedimentary processes to abrupt millennial-scale climate variability is rather unknown. Frequency of distal turbidites and amounts of advected detrital carbonate are estimated off the Lisbon–Setúbal canyons (core MD03-2698, at 4602 mwd), within a chronostratigraphy based on radiometric ages, oxygen isotopes and paleomagnetic key global anomalies. We found that: 1) higher frequency of turbidites concurred with Northern Hemisphere coldest temperatures (Greenland Stadials [GS], including Heinrich [H] events). But more than that, an escalating frequency of turbidites starts with the onset of global sea-level rising (and warming in Antarctica) and culminates during H events, at the time when rising is still in its early-mid stage, and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is re-starting. This short time span coincides with maximum gradients of ocean surface and bottom temperatures between GS and Antarctic warmings (Antarctic Isotope Maximum; AIM 17, 14, 12, 8, 4, 2) and rapid sea-level rises. 2) Trigger of turbidity currents is not the only sedimentary process responding to millennial variability; land-detrital carbonate (with a very negative bulk δ18O signature) enters the deep-sea by density-driven slope lateral advection, accordingly during GS. 3) Possible mechanisms to create slope instability on the Portuguese continental margin are sea-level variations as small as 20 m, and slope friction by rapid deep and intermediate re-accommodation of water masses circulation. 4) Common forcing mechanisms appear to drive slope instability at both millennial and orbital scales.  相似文献

The tuff and basanite of Rosenberg 20 km NW of Kassel are thus far unknown occurrences of megacrysts and polycrystalline aggregates of pargasitic-kaersutitic amphibole and of xenoliths of amphibole-bearing peridotite and pyroxenite. The amphiboles precipitated successively with gradually increasing Fe/Mg from the same magma from which the basanite was ultimately derived. The amphibole fractionation commenced within the upper mantle but may have continued into higher levels within the ascending melt.Amphibole and phlogopite fractionation together caused an increased Na/K ratio in the Rosenberg basanite. The crystallization of amphibole and phlogopite is genetically interrelated with the violent eruptive nature of the Rosenberg volcano. The release of vapour during the final stage of amphibole crystallization is indicated by the existence of coarsely vesicular amphibole megacrysts.  相似文献

In this study, the impact of various types of observations on the track forecast of Tropical Cyclone (TC) Jangmi (200815) is examined by using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and the corresponding three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) data assimilation system. TC Jangmi is a recurving typhoon that is observed as part of the THORPEX Pacific Asian Regional Campaign (T-PARC). Conventional observations from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and targeted dropsonde observations from the Dropwindsonde Observations for Typhoon Surveillance near the Taiwan Region (DOTSTAR) were used for a series of observation system experiments (OSEs). We found that the assimilation of observations in oceanic areas is important to analyze environmental flows (such as the North Pacific high) and to predict the recurvature of TC Jangmi. The assimilation of targeted dropsonde observations (DROP) results in a significant impact on the track forecast. Observations of ocean surface winds (QSCAT) and satellite temperature soundings (SATEM) also contribute positively to the track forecast, especially two- to three-day forecasts. The impact of sensitivity guidance such as real-time singular vectors (SVs) was evaluated in additional experiments.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to estimate and compare suction stress between sand and silt sampled from the coast of Korea. The water content and matric suction of sand (Joomunjin) and silt (Saemangeum) were first examined using an automated soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC) apparatus based on the axis translation technique. SWCCs were then estimated from the test results using the van Genuchten (1980) model. At equal matric suction, the corresponding water content of silt was higher than that of sand. Moreover, the saturated water content and air-entry value (AEV) of silt were larger than those of sand. Using the fitting SWCC parameters, suction stress characteristic curves (SSCCs) were estimated according to the method proposed by Lu and Likos (2006). The SSCC behavior for sand and silt was different and significantly depended on the material properties, particularly pore size and pore size distribution. For sand, the suction stress exhibited rapid variation with changes in matric suction, but for silt, the suction stress approached a constant value as the matric suction increased. In addition, when the matric suction was smaller than the AEV of soil, the suction stress was equal to the magnitude of the matric suction. In contrast, when the matric suction exceeded the AEV of soil, suction stress had a nonlinear shape with respect to the matric suction.  相似文献

To understand the effects of temperature, pH and mechanical stress on the pressure dissolution of quartz, two experiments using monocrystalline quartz samples were conducted. The first was a closed-fluid experiment to investigate the effect of pH, and the second was a flow-through experiment to investigate stress and temperature effects. To initiate the pressure dissolution, a pair of samples was immersed in a solution with a prescribed pH. The samples were stressed mechanically by pressing one sample against the other. In the closed-fluid experiments, the pH of the solution was fixed to 7, 9, 11 and 13, the applied stress was approximately 200 MPa and temperature 25°C. The flow-through experiments were conducted at three different temperatures (35, 50 and 75°C) at the same pH 11.7. The value of the applied stress was 7.32, 13.72, 21.42 or 25.27 MPa. During each of these dissolution tests, the solution was regularly sampled and analyzed by an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry technique to measure Si-concentration. With the measured Si-concentration, a dissolution rate constant was computed the different pH, stress and temperature conditions. The rate constant is proportional to pH, stress and temperature, as indicated in the literature. It should be noted that the rate constant for the highest stress (200 MPa) was considerably greater than for the other cases. In addition, island-channel patterns characterized by micro-cracks a few nanometers in length were seen on the dissolved parts of the samples. The findings and the measured data in this paper may be useful for the future development of theoretical models for pressure dissolution and its validation.  相似文献

An analysis of the heavy snowfall that occurred on 11?C14 February 2011 in the Yeongdong region along the eastern coast is presented. Relevant characteristics based on observation and model simulations are discussed with a focus on the times of maximum snowfall in Gangneung (GN) and Daegwallyong (DG). This event was considered part of the typical snowfall pattern that frequently occurs in the Yeongdong region due to the prevailing northeasterly flow. The control simulation using the high resolution Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model (1 km × 1 km) showed reasonable performance in capturing the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of precipitation. The area of precipitation maxima appeared to propagate from the plain coastal region further into the inland mountainous region, in relation to the location of convergence zone. In addition, a series of sensitivity experiments were performed to investigate the effect of topography and sea surface temperature (SST) on the formation of heavy snowfall. The change of topography tended to modulate the topographically induced mechanical flow, and thereby modify the precipitation distribution, which highlights the importance of an elaborate representation of the topography. On the other hand, the sensitivity experiment to prescribe positive (negative) SST forcing shows the enhanced (suppressed) precipitation amount due to the change of the sensible and latent heat fluxes.  相似文献

We propose a dynamical interpretation of the inverse relationship between the tropical eastern Pacific annual-cycle (AC) amplitude and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) amplitude, based on a pre-industrial simulation of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Couple climate model 2.0 with a fixed concentration of greenhouse gases spanning approximately 500 years. The slowly varying background conditions over more than a decade alternately provided favorable conditions for two opposite regimes, namely the ‘strong AC—weak ENSO regime’ and the ‘weak AC—strong ENSO regime’. For the weak AC—strong ENSO regime, the tropical eastern Pacific shows meridional-asymmetric surface warming with an emphasis on the southern part, leading to weakening of both the zonal trade wind and the cross equatorial southerly wind, as well as deepening of both the thermocline and mixed layer. The deeper mixed layer, weaker southerly wind, and reduced zonal gradient of the mean sea surface temperature due to tropical eastern Pacific warming all acts to reduce the AC. Conversely, the ENSO was intensified by the deeper mixed layer and deeper thermocline depth (thermocline feedback), but suppressed by the deeper thermocline depth (Ekman feedback) and the reduced zonal temperature gradient. We also computed the coupling strengths of the ENSO and AC, defined as the linear regression coefficients of the zonal and meridional wind stresses against the eastern Pacific SST, respectively. The coupling strengths of both the AC and ENSO are larger when they are intensified, and vice versa. All processes for the weak AC—strong ENSO regime operate in the opposite manner for the strong AC—weak ENSO regime.  相似文献
