Aerial surveys were conducted in the north-central Gulf of Mexico from June 1988 to May 1989. Sightings of marine debris and specifically large floating plastics were recorded during these surveys. Five study areas off the Louisiana coast were monitored and seasonal distribution and densities were estimated. Each study area contained plastic throughout the year. The estimated densities of plastic were largest in the offshore areas (4 & 5) and smallest in the inshore areas (1 & 3). Seasonally, density of plastic was smallest in the summer and largest in the fall. The reasons for the differences in seasons and study areas are not apparent but the amount of plastic in each area and season could be affected by variations in currents, winds, discharge from rivers, and human activity. 相似文献

Data from Turkey Brook are used to demonstrate that the interaction between gravel bedforms, flow resistance and bedload transport is a dynamic one, both between and within hydrographs. and that creation of a significant component of form drag through construction of microforms (pebble clusters) may precede the eventual break-up of the bed in a transport event. This process of drag augmentation', which can be seen as a feedback mechanism delaying transport and can be likened to dilation of a soil tested in a direct shear apparatus, itself appears to be dependent on the characteristics of turbulence, and therefore involves feedback at a finer resolution than envisaged by Hassan and Reid (1990). 相似文献

Iran is attempting to return to its pre-Islamic revolution stage of regional hegemony in the Persian Gulf. During the 1980's, Iran alienated itself from both superpowers — the USA and the USSR. More recently, Iran has began a process of regaining much of its international legitimacy. This includes the adoption of a neutral stance during the Gulf War of 1991, acting as a mediator in Afghanistan and by a — so far — policy of restrained intervention in the newly independent Central Asian Moslem states of the former Soviet Union. Iran continues to see itself as a powerful Middle Eastern state which has the right to manage affairs in the Persian Gulf. This will be difficult to achieve as long as Iran is perceived as a reactionary state by the USA and European powers, in their continued support for Saudi regional interests. 相似文献

We present velocity constraints for the upper-mantle transition zones beneath Central Siberia based on observations of the 1982 RIFT Deep Seismic Sounding (DSS) profile. The data consist of seismic recordings of a nuclear explosion in north-western Siberia along a 2600 km long seismic profile extending from the Yamal Peninsula to Lake Baikal. We invert seismic data from the mantle transition zones using a non-linear inversion scheme using a genetic algorithm for optimization and the WKBJ method to compute the synthetic seismograms. A statistical error analysis using a graph-binning technique was performed to provide uncertainty values in the velocity models.
Our best model for the upper-mantle velocity discontinuity near 410 km depth has a two-stage velocity-gradient structure, with velocities increasing from 8.70–9.25 km s−1 over a depth range of 400–415 km, a gradient of 0.0433 s−1 , and from 9.25–9.60 km s−1 over a depth range of 415–435 km, a gradient of 0.0175 s−1 . This derived model is consistent with other seismological observations and mineral-physics models. The model for the velocity discontinuity near 660 km depth is simple, sharp and includes velocities increasing from 10.15 km s−1 at 655 km depth to 10.70 km s−1 at 660 km depth, a gradient of 0.055 s−1 . 相似文献

238U, 232Th, 230Th and 226Ra abundances have been measured in six samples of recent Hawaiian basalt by high precision mass spectrometry, in an attempt to compare the melting process in plumes and at spreading ridges. The data reveal a very small range in (230Th/238U) activity ratio up to a maximum value of 1.02 ± 0.01, and (226Ra/230Th) activity ratios which lie between 1.10 ± 0.015 and 1.19 ± 0.02. UTh and RaTh abundances are linearly correlated demonstrating that the disequilibria predate crystallisation and differentiation. Using recently published estimates for the bulk partition coefficients of U and Th, the results are consistent with melting rates > 10−3 kg m−3 a−1 at porosities < 10−3 for dynamic fractional melting in the garnet stability field. 相似文献

Two contrasting 18 yr periods (1950–1967 and 1968–1985) were compared to illustrate the hydrologic and water resources effects of a change to a wetter climatic regime over Illinois. For the nine State Climate Divisions, precipitation increases and fluctuations in wetness measured by Palmer Drought Indices revealed a marked shift between the periods. The seasonal variability and spatial coherence of this precipitation climate fluctuation and its impacts are examined in detail and quantitative relationships are derived between Drought Indices and measured soil moisture and streamflow at several sites. Riverflow and well level changes are consistent with this climate change on the 20–40 yr time-scale which has had some significance for water management in the area. 相似文献

As part of an integrated study of the hydrology, meltwater quality and dynamics of the Haut Glacier d'Arolla, Switzerland, the glacier's drainage network structure was determined from patterns of dye recovery in 342 injection experiments conducted from 47 moulins distributed widely across the glacier. This structure was compared with theoretical predictions based upon reconstructed patterns of water flow governed by (a) the subglacial hydraulic potential surface, and (b) the subglacial bedrock surface. These reconstructions were based on measurements of ice surface and bedrock topography obtained by a combination of ground survey and radio-echo sounding techniques. The two reconstructions simulate the drainage system structures expected for (a) closed channels, in which water is pressurized by the overlying ice, and (b) gravity-driven, open-channel flow. The closed-channel model provides the best fit to the observed structure, even though theoretical calculations suggest that, under summer discharge conditions, open-channel flow may be widespread beneath the glacier. Detrended canonical coreespondence analysis (DCCA) was used to examine the relationships between diatom species distributions and environmental variables from 62 drainage lakes in the Adirondack region, New York (USA). The contribution of lakewater pH, Alm (monomeric Al), NH4, maximum depth, Mg, and DOC (dissolved organic carbon) were statistically significant in explaining the patterns of variation in the diatom species composition. Twenty-three and sixteen diatom taxa were identified as potential indicator species for pH and Alm, respectively (i.e. a taxon with a strong statistical relationship to the environmental variable of interest, a well defined optimum, and a narrow tolerance to the variable of interest). Using weighted-averaging regression and calibration, predictive models were developed to infer lakewater pH (r
2=0.91), Alm (r
2=0.83), DOC (dissolved organic carbon) (r
2=0.64), and ANC (acid neutralizing capacity; r
