Mobility of aqueous contaminants at abandoned mining sites: insights from case studies in Sardinia with implications for remediation 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Public awareness of environmental health issues has increased significantly in recent years, creating the need for detailed
scientific studies that can identify potential environmental problems. This paper reports the results of hydrogeochemical
surveys carried out in Sardinia, an Italian region with a long mining history. When mining operations in Sardinia ceased,
actions for limiting the potential adverse effects of mine closure on the water system were not undertaken. Drainages from
flooded mines and seeps from mining residues left on the ground are the main mining-related sources of contamination in Sardinia.
Due to the proximity of mining sites to water resources and land that is within reach of animals and humans, the major risks
to human health are associated with the direct discharge of contaminated waters into the streams and soils located down-gradient
of the abandoned mines. Results of hydrogeochemical surveys carried out under different seasonal conditions showed that the
dispersion of toxic and harmful elements (As, Cd, Ni, Pb, Sb and Zn) increases during the rainy season, especially under high
runoff conditions. These results should help regional and national authorities to address present environmental regulations,
particularly those regarding the quality of water resources. Furthermore, the results might be useful elsewhere for planning
remediation actions at abandoned mining sites. Lessons learned by past mining in Sardinia indicate that correct disposal and
management of mining residues should be mandatory from the beginning of exploitation and processing at each active mine. This

Hydrographic data and composite current velocity data (ADCP and GEK) were used to examine the seasonal variations of upper-ocean
flow in the southern sea area of Hokkaido, which includes the “off-Doto” and “Hidaka Bay” areas separated by Cape Erimo. During
the heating season (April–September), the outflow of the Tsugaru Warm Current (TWC) from the Tsugaru Strait first extends
north-eastward, and then one branch of TWC turns to the west along the shelf slope after it approaches the Hidaka Shelf. The
main flow of TWC evolves continuously, extending eastward as far as the area off Cape Erimo. In the late cooling season (January–March),
part of the Oyashio enters Hidaka Bay along the shallower part of the shelf slope through the area off Cape Erimo, replacing
almost all of the TWC water, and hence the TWC devolves. It is suggested that the bottom-controlled barotropic flow of the
Oyashio, which may be caused by the small density difference between the Oyashio and the TWC waters and the southward migration
of main front of TWC, permits the Oyashio water to intrude along the Hidaka shelf slope. 相似文献

Comparative analysis of the energy and carbon balances of wood vs. non-wood products is a complex issue. In this paper we discuss the definition of an appropriate functional unit and the establishment of effective system boundaries in terms of activity, time and space, with an emphasis on the comparison of buildings. The functional unit can be defined at the level of building component, complete building, or services provided by the built environment. Energy use or carbon emissions per unit of mass or volume of material is inadequate as a functional unit because equal masses or volumes of different materials do not fulfil the same function. Activity-based system boundaries include life cycle processes such as material production, product operation, and post-use material management. If the products compared are functionally equivalent, such that the impacts occurring during the operation phase are equal, we suggest that this phase may be dropped from the analysis allowing a focus on material flows. The use of wood co-products as biofuel can be analytically treated through system expansion, and compared to an alternative of providing the same energy service with fossil fuels. The assumed production of electricity used for material processing is another important energy-related issue, and we suggest that using marginal production data is more appropriate than average production. Temporal system boundaries include such aspects of the wood life cycle as the dynamics of forest growth including regeneration and saturation, the availability of residue biofuels at different times, and the duration of carbon storage in products. The establishment of spatial boundaries can be problematic, because using wood-based materials instead of non-wood materials requires more land area to capture solar energy and accumulate biomass. We discuss several possible approaches to meet this challenge, including the intensification of land use to increase the time rate of biomass production. Finally, we discuss issues related to scaling up an analysis of wood substitution from the micro-level to the macro-level of national, regional or global. 相似文献

The geological complexities of banded iron formation (BIF) and associated iron ores of Jilling-Langalata iron ore deposits,
Singhbhum-North Orissa Craton, belonging to Iron Ore Group (IOG) eastern India have been studied in detail along with the
geochemical evaluation of different iron ores. The geochemical and mineralogical characterization suggests that the massive,
hard laminated, soft laminated ore and blue dust had a genetic lineage from BIFs aided with certain input from hydrothermal
activity. The PAAS normalized REE pattern of Jilling BIF striking positive Eu anomaly, resembling those of modern hydrothermal
solutions from mid-oceanic ridge (MOR). Major part of the iron could have been added to the bottom sea water by hydrothermal
solutions derived from hydrothermally active anoxic marine environments. The ubiquitous presence of intercalated tuffaceous
shales indicates the volcanic signature in BIF.
Mineralogical studies reveal that magnetite was the principal iron oxide mineral, whose depositional history is preserved
in BHJ, where it remains in the form of martite and the platy hematite is mainly the product of martite. The different types
of iron ores are intricately related with the BHJ. Removal of silica from BIF and successive precipitation of iron by hydrothermal
fluids of possible meteoric origin resulted in the formation of martite-goethite ore. The hard laminated ore has been formed
in the second phase of supergene processes, where the deep burial upgrades the hydrous iron oxides to hematite. The massive
ore is syngenetic in origin with BHJ. Soft laminated ores and biscuity ores were formed where further precipitation of iron

The age of the marine Nodular Limestone Formation of the Bagh Group is refined at Substage level through ammonoid and inoceramid index taxa. The study is based on the fresh collections from three well-defined successive intervals (Lower Karondia, Upper Karondia and Chirakhan members) of this formation having excellent exposures in different localities of the Narmada Basin, central India. The first record of the widely distributed Turonian ammonoid genera Spathites Kummel and Decker and Collignoniceras Breistroffer from the Nodular Limestone Formation constrained its age exclusively to Turonian. The Early Turonian species Spathites (Jeanrogericeras) aff. revelieranus (Courtiller) and Mytiloides labiatus (Sclotheim) occur in the lower part, while the Middle Turonian marker Collignoniceras cf. carolinum (d’Obrbigny) and Inoceramus hobetsensis (Nagao and Matsumoto) occurs in the upper part of the Karondia Member. The record of the index species Inoceramus teshioensis (Nagao and Matsumoto) in association with Placenticeras mintoi Vredenburg from Chirakhan Member allows a definite Late Turonian age. The present contribution is an attempt to resolve the controversies in the age of the Nodular Limestone Formation and also demarcation of the three divisions (Early, Middle and Late) of the Turonian Stage in the Narmada Basin, central India. 相似文献

An experimental investigation of the airflow structure in the near surface region over the wind-sheared air–water interface
is reported. The two-dimensional velocity fields in a plane perpendicular to the water surface were measured using particle
image velocimetry (PIV) technique over a wind speed range from 1.5 to 4.4 m s−1. The results show a reduction in the mean velocity magnitudes and the tangential stresses when gravity waves appear on the
surface. An enhanced vorticity layer was observed immediately above the water surface that extended to a height of approximately
2 cm. The vorticity was enhanced by an order of magnitude, and the energy dissipation rate was enhanced by a factor of 7 in
this layer at all wind speeds. The vertical profiles of Reynolds stress, energy production, and dissipation indicate the contribution
of surface waves in the enhanced transfer of momentum and energy between the two fluids. The results in this study show that
the flow dynamics in a layer immediately adjacent to the water surface whose thickness is of the order of the significant
wave height is significantly different from that at greater heights. Thus, it is concluded that the quantitative investigation
of the flow in the immediate vicinity of the interface is vital for an improved understanding of the heat, mass, and momentum
exchange between air and water. The present study demonstrates that PIV is an effective technique to accurately measure the

Leachate was a major cause of high risk classification. This landfill was set as one with highest possible risk classification due to high vulnerability of private water wells to contamination from leachate flows. The aim of this study is to determine the present and possible environmental risks of the leachate spreading from solid waste dumping site in Tunceli and offer solutions for those determined environmental risks. For this purpose, the characteristics of the leachate were monitored at two station points detected in the solid waste dumping site for 7 months. The characteristics of the leachate were found for pH between 7.9 and 8.7. Oxidation reduction potential (ORP) occurred between ??143 and ??48 mV while conductivity was between 2.8 and 2.6 mS. Total solid matter (TSM) and suspended solid matter (SSM) were between 1000 and 7000 mg/l, 0.2–22.5 mg/l, respectively, while total volatile solids (TVS) occurred between 300 and 1800 mg/l for the two stations. Alkalinity was approximately between 290 and 5210 mg/l, while biological oxygen demand (BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) results were 15–606 mg/l and 60–1160 mg/l, respectively, for two stations in all sampling time. In both stations, orthophosphate, ammonium nitrogen, nitrate, sulfate, and chloride analyses stayed between 3.04 and 921.1 mg/l; 0.29–619.36 mg/l; 8.94–135.04 mg/l; 125.9–1360.9 mg/l and 99.9–1249.9 mg/l, respectively, in 6 months. As a result of the characterization studies obtained from the leachate, it was found that the amounts of water entering into the waste mass and the retention period of the water in the mass were very effective in the temporal character change of the leachate. According to the Discharge Standards for Solid Waste Assessment and Disposal Facilities and Discharge to Waste Water Infrastructure Facilities of waste management regulation, the results were found to be risky. Consequently, the site in question needs to be urgently rehabilitated when considering the environmental risks of the leachate spreading from the site. 相似文献
