Deterministic signals in precipitation in Arkansas,Louisiana, and Mississippi

Evidence for a signal near 19 years is found in 51 out of 65 rain gauge records in the tri-state region of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, While another term with period 10 to 11 years is found in 39 instances. These are identified as the 18.6-year luni-solarM _n and solar cycleS _c signals in climate variability. In terms of both amplitude and phase the luni-solar wave trains are highly nonstationary; in particular, the waves commonly change phase by 180°. Examples of theM _n andS _c terms in corn yield for Arkansas and Missouri are presented, and the implications for economic science briefly discussed.     

The reaction 3 cordierite = 2 garnet + 4 sillimanite + 5 quartz as a geological thermometer in the Opinicon Lake region,Ontario

In equilibrated metamorphic rocks containing coexisting garnet, cordierite, quartz and sillimanite, the exchange of iron and magnesium between cordierite and garnet offers a highly favourable geological thermometer and barometer, because this exchange reaction is insensitive to pressure. Thermodynamic analysis shows that this thermometer may be calibrated from knowledge of the breakdown reactions for iron and magnesian cordierite end members to garnet. The thermometer was experimentally calibrated using cordierites of intermediate composition. When applied to rocks showing petrographic evidence of equilibrium, and chemical evidence of reaction between garnet and cordierite, the thermometer yielded temperatures of 600–750:C, and pressures of 5.7–6.7 kilobars. Similar conditions are indicated by other literature data on cordierite-garnet gneisses, and are believed to represent hornblende granulite grade of metamorphism.     

Saturn satellite observations and orbits from the 1980 ring plane crossing

The ground-based observations of the recently discovered Saturnian satellites, obtained during the 1980 apparition, have been collected from the IAU Circulars and identified with and fit to four orbital groups: (1) the inner pair of coorbital librating satellites, (2) the satellite known as “Dione B” near the L₄ point of Dione-Saturn, (3) the satellites associated with the L₄ and L₅ points of Tethys-Saturn or, alternatively, one satellite unconfortably near the orbit of Tethys, and (4) the F-ring satellites observed by Voyager I.     

Saturn's E ring: I. CCD observations of March 1980

The tenuous E ring of Saturn is found to commence abruptly at 3 Saturn radii, to peak sharply in the vicinity of the orbit of the satellite Enceladus (about 4 radii), and to spread out thinly to more than 8 radii. This distribution strongly suggests it to be associated with Enceladus and perhaps to be material ejected from Enceladus. The spread of E-ring material above and below the ring plane is greater in its tenuous outskirts than in its denser inner region, suggesting that the E ring may be at an early stage in its evolution. Thus far, our analysis reveals only a marginal variation of the ring with time or Enceladus azimuth. In this paper we describe the special instrumentation used for photometric observations of the E ring, and we present some of the data obtained in March 1980. In Paper II we shall derive the three-dimensional distribution of material in the E ring and discuss its cosmogonic implications.
