The Quepos, Nicoya and Herradura oceanic igneous terranes in Costa Rica are conspicuous features of a Mid to Late Cretaceous regional magmatic event that encompasses similar terranes in Central America, Colombia, Ecuador and the Caribbean. The Quepos terrane (66?Ma), which consists of ol-cpx phyric, tholeiitic pillow lavas overlain by highly vesicular hyaloclastites, breccias and conglomerates, is interpreted as an uplifted seamount/ocean island complex. The Nicoya (~90?Ma) and Herradura terranes consist of fault-bounded sequences of sediments, tholeiitic volcanics (pillow lavas and massive sheet flows) and plutonic rocks. The volcanic rocks were emplaced at relatively high eruption rates in moderate to deep water, possibly forming part of an oceanic plateau. Major and trace element data from Nicoya/Herradura tholeiites indicate higher melting temperatures than inferred for normal mid-ocean-ridge basalts (MORB) and/or a different source composition. Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic ratios from all three terranes are distinct from MORB but resemble those from the Galápagos hotspot. The volcanological, petrological and geochemical data from Costa Rican volcanic terranes, combined with published age data, paleomagnetic results and plate tectonic reconstructions of this region, provide strong evidence for a Mid Cretaceous (~90Ma) age for the Galápagos hotspot, making it one of the oldest known, active hotspots on Earth. A material balance is constructed for excess 210Pb (relative to 226Ra) as a test of the retentivity of Long Island Sound for a reactive heavy metal. Excess 210Pb is supplied to Long Island Sound chiefly by direct atmospheric deposition [1 ± 0.2(dis·min?1)cm?2·yr?1]. Rivers supply less than 20% of the atmospheric flux, and other inputs, from open ocean waters, 226Ra decay, groundwater seepage, and sewage discharge, appear to be negligible. The total input of excess 210Pb represents approximately the flux required to maintain the inventory of excess 210Pb measured in sediment cores from central Long Island Sound; that is, excess 210Pb is lost from Long Island Sound chiefly by radioactive decay. The retention of excess 210Pb within Long Island Sound is achieved in two steps: a rapid removal of soluble 210Pb onto suspended particles and the ongoing entrapment of particles in the basin by the residual bottom-water influx from the east. 相似文献

The replacement by ferroan calcite with preservation of the original structures can be used as a new criterion for identifying skeletons originally composed of high-magnesian calcite. This applies to bryozoa, rugose corals, echinoderms, many foraminifera, most ostracods, red algae, and serpulids. On the other hand, skeletons originally composed of low-magnesian calcite were never replaced by ferroan calcite, as shown by belemnites, brachiopods, and most of the pelecypods. Using this criterion, an original low-magnesian calcite composition is inferred for Tentaculites and some ostracods and foraminifera, whereas a previous high-magnesian calcite composition is inferred for trilobites, oligostegina and certain ooids. Chemical instability of high-magnesian calcite is suggested to be the driving force of the replacement by ferroan calcite. In most of the thirty-seven samples investigated, of Oligocene to Devonian age, the ferrous iron concentration of the interstitial fluid increased during diagenesis, as shown by well established sequences of cement A and B and fissure fill. This offers a relative time scale for diagenetic processes. Ferroan calcites contain up to 6 mol % FeCO3 and up to 5 mol % MgCO3. In this range of concentration, the distribution coefficients for Fe and Mg between calcite and solution at about 25°C are about 1 to 0-03, respectively, according to experiments. Possible sources of iron are iron oxides and hydroxides as well as clay minerals including glauconite. Though a submarine origin below the sediment surface is conceivable for ferroan calcite, there are serious limiting conditions such as low Eh and, at the same time, lack in sulphate-reducing bacteria. On the other hand, ferroan ‘dedolomite’, compositional zonality in individual ferroan calcite overgrowths, low δ18C and δ18O values, and low Mg concentrations point more to a meteoric-phreatic origin of many ferroan calcite occurrences. 相似文献

An examination of day-to-day and monthly mean positions of the electrojet axis in relation to the changes in the apparent solar declination, in the Indian equatorial region shows marked association between the two. For relatively quiet days, significant correlations are observed between the solar declination and each of the parameters, the northernSq focal latitude, the jet axis and the line of maximumSq(H). Though over four-fifths of Indian population is Hindu, there are sizeable numbers of other religious groups: Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain and other religion (mainly aboriginal animists). Hindus are spread out all over the country with declining or negligible concentration at the southern, northeastern and northwestern parts of the country. Sikhs are concentrated in Punjab; Muslims have majority in the northwestern Kashmir and Lakhadweep; Buddhists compose over 50% population in Western Kashmir, immediately south of it and Sikkim; Mixed religious areas are in the northeastern and southwestern tip of the country. By applying factor analysis technique it is possible to delineate religious regions of India with five major classes: Mainly Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist and Mixed. Fresh-water lenses are the major sources of water supply in many atoll islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, particularly
in dry seasons. Several two- and three-dimensional models are currently available for the simulation of atoll-island aquifers;
however, 2D models cannot include 3D spatial variability of material properties, they must simplify the boundary conditions,
and they cannot correctly simulate pumping wells. In an attempt to overcome these difficulties, a 3D model, SALTFLOW, was
adopted for the simulation of Home Island in the Indian Ocean. This exercise required a discretisation on the order of a few
metres and time steps of a few hours requiring significantly high CPU times. High CPU demand proved to be a difficult challenge
but cannot be considered a serious practical limitation with today's advanced computers. The exhaustive data demands of the
model (e.g., 3D distributions of hydraulic conductivity, porosity, dispersivities, and spatial and temporal variations of
recharge and extraction rates) proved to be more problematical. Although the Home Island data set is unusually comprehensive
by any standards, nonetheless the quality and quantity of the available data proved inadequate to meet the calibration needs
of a highly karstic aquifer system. The Home Island modeling demonstrates the practical limitations of 3D models. It raises
the concern that our ability to develop computer codes capable of simulating complex systems now exceeds our ability to supply
the input data necessary for reliable calibration. Finally, the paper demonstrates the importance of the transient calibration
in reliable simulation of various management options and emphasises that transient calibration should be considered as an
integral part of any similar 2D or 3D modeling.
