Anthropogenic activities are a disturbance factor of coastal systems and can be widely recognized as a major threat to the
health of coastal systems. However, natural events cannot be disregarded from management issues because of their significant
influence on the communities living in these areas. Based on long-term subtidal data from the Mondego Estuary (Portugal),
the effects of natural events (e.g., floods and droughts) on macrobenthic communities were compared with the anthropogenic
events. Sampling stations were grouped into characteristic zones (mouth, north arm, south arm) so the community dynamics of
each of these estuarine areas could be followed over time. Environmental assessment was performed for stations using the Benthic
Assessment Tool (BAT), and compared with the existing pressures. Human impacts persist over a number of years and gradually
reduce ecosystem health, as discussed in the European Water Framework Directive. Paradoxically, natural events cause stronger
impacts but are of a shorter duration, which allows for a faster recovery of macrobenthic communities. The study showed that
caution should be taken when developing and implementing water policies so as not to disregard the importance of the different
events (natural and human-caused) on the ecosystem health (e.g., community degradation and water quality and ecological quality
status assessment). 相似文献
The presence of decapod crustaceans in the Pliocene and Pleistocene (MIS 5e) fossil record of Santa Maria Island (Azores Archipelago) is herein reviewed. Our study raises the number of fossil decapods from this island from one species to 10 taxa (three for the Pliocene and seven for the Last Interglacial). Four of these 10 taxa are reported for the first time in the fossil record, worldwide. A new species of a mud shrimp is also described (Upogebia azorensis n. sp.). Our study suggests that the Plio–Pleistocene decapod assemblages of the Azores did not differ significantly from modern ones, being dominated by species that are today widespread across the Webbnesia ecoregion, the Mediterranean Sea, and the eastern Atlantic shores, including the Azores. As far as can be judged from the limited fossil record, apparently no tropical crab species with a Cabo Verdean/Senegalese provenance reached the Azores during windows of opportunity associated with Glacial Termination 2 or with the initial setting of the Last Interglacial period. This contribution increases the total number of marine taxa reported for the Pliocene and Pleistocene outcrops of Santa Maria Island to 218 and 155, respectively, highlighting the scientific relevance of its palaeontological heritage. 相似文献
In this study a multi-tracer test with fluorescent tracers was combined with time series analyses of natural tracers to characterize
the dynamics of the solute transport through different recharge pathways and to study hydraulic behaviour of a binary karst
system under low-flow conditions. Fluorescent tracer testing included the introduction of uranine, amidorhodamine G, or naphthionate
at three injection points. Sampling and monitoring took place at two karst springs (Malenščica, Unica) and at two underground
rivers (Pivka, Rak) recharging the Unica River at the Polje of Planina, SW Slovenia. Other monitored parameters included precipitation,
spring or underground river discharge, water temperature, and electrical conductivity. Water samples were collected and analyzed
for total organic carbon, Mg2+, SO42−, and NO3− in the laboratory. In the study area, results of the tracer test suggest that contaminant transport in karst may be retarded
for several weeks during low-flow conditions followed by increases in contaminant concentrations after subsequent rainfall
events. Based on interpretation of tracer concentration breakthrough curves, low apparent dominant flow velocities (i.e.,
between 5.8 and 22.8 m/h through the well developed karst conduits, and 3.6 m/h through the prevailing vadose zone with a
dominant influence of a diffuse recharge) were obtained. Together with analyses of hydro-chemographs the artificial tracing
identified different origins of water recharging the studied aquifer. During prolonged low-water conditions the Malenščica
spring is mainly recharged from the karst aquifer and the Unica spring by the sinking Pivka River. After more intensive rainfall
events allogenic recharge from Cerknica prevails in the Malenščica spring, while the Unica spring drains mainly the allogenic
water from the Pivka Valley. These findings of alternating hydraulic connections and drainage areas due to respective hydrological
conditions are important and should be considered when monitoring water quality, implementing groundwater protection measures,
and optimizing future water exploitation. 相似文献
Top–down and bottom–up effects interact to structure communities, especially in salt marshes, which contain strong gradients
in bottom–up drivers such as salinity and nutrients. How omnivorous consumers respond to variation in prey availability and
plant quality is poorly understood. We used a mesocosm experiment to examine how salinity, nutrients, an omnivore (the katydid
Orchelimum fidicinium) and an herbivore (the planthopper Prokelisia spp.) interacted to structure a simplified salt marsh food web based on the marsh grass Spartina alterniflora. Bottom–up effects were strong, with both salinity and nutrients decreasing leaf C/N and increasing Prokelisia abundance. Top–down effects on plants were also strong, with both the herbivore and the omnivore affecting S. alterniflora traits and growth, especially when nutrients or salt were added. In contrast, top–down control by Orchelimum of Prokelisia was independent of bottom–up conditions. Orchelimum grew best on a diet containing both Spartina and Prokelisia, and in contrast to a sympatric omnivorous crab, did not shift to an animal-based diet when prey were present, suggesting
that it is constrained to consume a mixed diet. These results suggest that the trophic effects of omnivores depend on omnivore
behavior, dietary constraints, and ability to suppress lower trophic levels, and that omnivorous katydids may play a previously
unrecognized role in salt marsh food webs. 相似文献
Ferromanganese crusts were found in carbonates of tectonostratigraphic units located in the northern and southern areas of the eastern External Subbetic of the Betic Cordilleras (SE Spain). The crusts are associated with four stratigraphic discontinuities of the Jurassic pelagic swells sequences: D1 (Late Carixian-Early Domerian), D2 (Middle Toarcian-Early Bajocian), D3 (Middle Bathonian-Middle Oxfordian), D4 (Early Tithonian-Late Albian). Two main textural types of crusts are distinguished. Type I crusts are thin and characterized by the presence of goethite, quartz, albite and phyllosilicates. Moreover, they show Si, Al, Mg, Na, Ti and K contents close to the European Shale Composite contents and Fe/Mn ratios (>350) higher than type II crusts. Type II crusts occur as thicker banded laminae and/or macrooncoids. They consist mainly of goethite and Mn-oxyhydroxides, which are enriched in REE, Co, Ni and Cu and show a strong Ce positive anomaly. After stratigraphical, mineralogical and geochemical data, the crust formation would be produced by the exposition of bottom sediments during long periods to a thin layer of oxidizing sea and porewater enriched in metallic elements. The textural and compositional variations between crusts can be explained by taking into account the bathymetric conditions. In shallower swells, the precipitation of a thick layer of banded type II crusts and in deeper areas, thin type I crusts were formed. Organic influence was only important in crusts from D3 of the northern area where textural evidence indicates the existence of seasonal periodically alternation between organism accretion and fine sedimentation. These were preceded and followed by phases in which the inorganic precipitation of oxides prevailed together with the fine sedimentation. 相似文献
Perturbation is an operation defined on the simplex and can be used for centering compositional data in a ternary diagram, applying objective criteria. Because a straight line in the original diagram is still astraight line in the perturbed diagram, gridlines or compositional fields defined by straight lines can easily be included in the operation. Simultaneous perturbation of data, gridlines, and/or compositional fields is shown to improve both visualization and graphical interpretation of compositions in ternary diagrams. This is illustrated by some examples using simulated as well as real data. 相似文献
The Messinian (Late Miocene) marine stratigraphic record of the Sorbas Basin (S.E. Spain) is well preserved and can be considered as being representative of the entire western Mediterranean. It exhibits a series of features relating to: (1) the composition, characteristics and evolution of coral reefs; (2) changes between temperate and subtropical climates; and (3) the extensive development of microbial carbonates (stromatolites and thrombolites) at the end of the Messinian. Each of these features has global significance.
Porites, which is the major and almost only coral component in reefs, is heavily encrusted with stromatolites. These reefs grew at the edge of the subtropical belt and were totally eliminated at the end of the Messinian because of global cooling.
Lowermost-Messinian carbonate sediments in the Sorbas Basin reflect a temperate climate, whereas those immediately above, which contain bioherms and coastal reefs, are subtropical. The shift from temperate to subtropical conditions during the early Messinian was accompanied by an important change in water circulation within the western Mediterranean. Temperate times were marked by cold surface Atlantic waters entering the Mediterranean, whereas subtropical times coincided with warm surface waters entering the western Mediterranean from the east. The subtropical waters were thermally stratified, which favoured the deposition of euxinic marls and diatomites at the centre of the basin. The upwelling of nutrient-rich water promoted stromatolite development within reefs and Halimeda growth on adjacent slopes.
Lastly, microbial carbonates (stromatolites and thrombolites) attained giant dimensions during the late Messinian, which can be regarded as a measure of their success in occupying a variety of ecological niches. This abundance of available habitats is believed to have resulted from the Messinian “salinity crisis”, which was followed by a re-colonization of the western Mediterranean. In this context stromatolite proliferation was due to opportunism of microbial communities in colonizing the new environments, rather than to a complete absence of other competitive biota. We do not believe that hypersaline conditions were a causal factor in stromatolite development because of the normal-marine biota associated with them. 相似文献
Maximum total displacement (D) is plotted against fault or thrust width(W) for 65 faults, thrusts, and groups of faults from a variety of geological environments. Displacements range from 0.4 m to 40 km and widths from 150 m to 630 km, and there is a near linear relationship betweenD andW2. The required compatibility strains (es) in rocks adjacent to these faults increases linearly withW and with
and ranges fromes=2×10–4 toes=3×10–1. These are permanent ductile strains, which compare with values ofes=2×10–5 for the elastic strains imposed during single slip earthquake events, which are characterised by a linear relationship between slip (u) andW.The data are consisten with a simple growth model for faults and thrusts, in which the slip in successive events increases by increments of constant size, and which predicts a relationship between displacement and width of the formD=cW2. Incorporation of constant ductile strain rate into the model shows that the repreat time for slip events remains constant throughout the life of a fault, while the displacement rate increases with time. An internally consistent model withes=2×10–5, giving repeat times of 160 years and instantaneous displacement rates of 0.02 cm/yr, 0.2 cm/yr, and 2.0 cm/yr when total displacement is 1 m, 100 m, and 10 km, and slip increasing by 0.5 mm with each event, gives a good approximation of the data. The model is also applicable to stable sliding, the slip rate varying with ductile strain rate and withW2. 相似文献
