The Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter (UVSP) on the Solar Maximum Mission spacecraft is described, including the experiment objectives, system design, performance, and modes of operation. The instrument operates in the wavelength range 1150–3600 Å with better than 2 arc sec spatial resolution, raster range 256 × 256 arc sec2, and 20 mÅ spectral resolution in second order. Observations can be made with specific sets of 4 lines simultaneously, or with both sides of 2 lines simultaneously for velocity and polarization. To understand the role played by microorganisms in the formation of cold seep carbonates, we conducted an integrated microbial, mineralogical and organic geochemical study of methane-related authigenic carbonate crusts formed on eastern Mediterranean mud volcanoes. We show that supersaturation with respect to carbonate minerals is induced by microbial anaerobic oxidation of methane. Combined lipid biomarker analysis and 16S rRNA gene surveys identified a highly diversified methane-consuming archaeal community possibly comprising novel species, implying that the anaerobic oxidation of methane is phylogenetically widespread and directly implicating these organisms in the process of crust precipitation. Moreover, pore-water sulphate gradients produced by co-occurring methane-based sulphate reduction exert the main control on aragonite versus magnesian calcite precipitation. We propose that this may be the dominant mode of carbonate crust formation at cold seeps world-wide, in agreement with aquatic chemistry predictions and explaining carbonate mineralogy. 相似文献

Systematic Rb-Sr determinations on granites and orthogneisses in the Western part of Massif Central Français (Limousin) permit us to say that metamorphism and associated folding occured in this area during the Devonian (between 400 and 350 m.y.) with anatexis stated at 360 m.y. Two premetamorphic magmatic episodes are located in the upper Cambrian-early Ordovician (520-490 m.y.) and in the Ordovician (460-450 m.y.). This should be compared with very similar radiometric results from Rouergue to South Brittany; thus a South Brittany-Limousin-Rouergue axis may be easily related to the acadian part from Appalachian belt. 相似文献

Humic acids were isolated from 5 sediments in which the origin nature of the organic matter are both typical and different. The humic acids were characterized on the basis of elemental compositions, infrared spectra and 1H and 13C NMR. This last technique, especially 13C NMR, provides qualitative and semi-quantitative information regarding aromatic structure. K-feldspars separated from Plio-Quaternary pumice flows of the Monts-Dore massif (Massif Central, France) give 40Ar/39Ar saddle-shaped age spectra. Laser-probe analysis of hand-picked single grains gives ages in agreement with those of overlying and underlying lava flows previously dated by the conventional K-Ar method. The laser-probe ages are lower than the minimum ages measured on the populations of grains by the step-heating method. As previously suggested by Lo Bello and co-workers for the pumice flow of Neschers belonging to the same volcanic massif, the saddle-shaped age spectra are ascribed to the different Ar-release patterns of two populations of K-feldspars: (1) young sanidine phenocrysts of the pumices; and (2) old K-feldspars plucked from the Hercynian basement during the explosive eruption. Measurements of both the granitic rocks from surrounding areas and the granitic xenoliths included in pumices give ages around 330 Ma and show that most of the xenocrysts included in the pumices did not lose significant amounts of argon during the eruption. With the 40Ar/39Ar step-heating method, we were able to detect contamination of Quaternary K-feldspars by Hercynian K-feldspars as low as 0.25. Because pumice flows of the Monts-Dore massif crop out over large areas, these new ages will be useful for establishing a precise stratigraphy of the European Plio-Quaternary. 相似文献

We have previously developed a method for characterizing and localizing 'homogeneous' buried sources, from the measure of potential anomalies at a fixed height above ground (magnetic, electric and gravity). This method is based on potential theory and uses the properties of the Poisson kernel (real by definition) and the continuous wavelet theory. Here, we relax the assumption on sources and introduce a method that we call the 'multiscale tomography'. Our approach is based on the harmonic extension of the observed magnetic field to produce a complex source by use of a complex Poisson kernel solution of the Laplace equation for complex potential field. A phase and modulus are defined. We show that the phase provides additional information on the total magnetic inclination and the structure of sources, while the modulus allows us to characterize its spatial location, depth and 'effective degree'. This method is compared to the 'complex dipolar tomography', extension of the Patella method that we previously developed. We applied both methods and a classical electrical resistivity tomography to detect and localize buried archaeological structures like antique ovens from magnetic measurements on the Fox-Amphoux site (France). Over the last few decades, remote sensing has revealed buried river channels in a number of regions worldwide, in many cases providing evidence of dramatic paleoenvironmental changes over Cenozoic time scales. Using orbital radar satellite imagery, we mapped a major paleodrainage system in eastern Libya, that could have linked the Kufrah Basin to the Mediterranean coast through the Sirt Basin, possibly as far back as the middle Miocene. Synthetic Aperture Radar images from the PALSAR sensor clearly reveal a 900 km-long river system, which starts with three main tributaries (north-eastern Tibesti, northern Uweinat and western Gilf Kebir/Abu Ras) that connect in the Kufrah oasis region. The river system then flows north through the Jebel Dalmah, and forms a large alluvial fan in the Sarir Dalmah. The sand dunes of the Calanscio Sand Sea prevent deep orbital radar penetration and preclude detailed reconstruction of any possible connection to the Mediterranean Sea, but a 300 km-long link to the Gulf of Sirt through the Wadi Sahabi paleochannel is likely. If this connection is confirmed, and its Miocene antiquity is established, then the Kufrah River, comparable in length to the Egyptian Nile, will have important implications for the understanding of the past environments and climates of northern Africa from the middle Miocene to the Holocene. 相似文献

The search for habitable exoplanets centers on planets with Earth-like conditions around late type stars. Radial velocity searches for these planets require precisions of 1 m/s and better. That is now being achieved. At these precisions stellar surface motions might lead to false detections. Of particular interest are variable meridional flows on stellar surfaces. I review the available observations of solar surface meridional flows using both Doppler shift and local helioseismology techniques. Interpretation in terms of Doppler shifts in integrated starlight leads to estimates of the likelihood of false detections.
