Bathyscaph dives off Madeira permitted discovering at a depth of about 1200 m, a morphologic feature interpreted as a volcanic crater or a small caldera. Between 900 m and 1700 m deep, volcano-sedimentary formations, interpreted as hyaloclastites of explosive origin, were observed. It is assumed that these formations were initially deposited at shallower depths and may reflect the subsidence of the Madeira archipelago owing to the great thickness of its volcano-sedimentary series (more than 6000 m).  相似文献

The in vivo response of freshwater fish exposed to pollutants was assessed using two biomarkers, 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) induction and DNA single strand breaks. Chub (Leuciscus cephalus) were caught in spring and in fall at various locations in the river Rhône watershed. EROD activity was measured in the liver while DNA damage was evaluated in chub erythrocytes using the recently developed Comet assay. Chemical contamination was evaluated both in fish muscle (PCBs) and in sediment (PCBs, PAHs, heavy metals) collected at each sampling station. Sex of individuals was shown to influence the level of EROD activity but not the level of DNA damage. The EROD activity as well as the DNA damage were found to be higher in the mostly contaminated stations compared to the reference one. This study shows that multibiomarker-based approach provides complementary informations about early effects in feral fish exposed to complex chemical pollution and highlights the interest of the Comet assay in genotoxicity assessment.  相似文献

为评价浅海海域底层在碳元素生物地化循环中的作用,采用现场取样培养法测定了黄海桑沟湾和胶州湾的沉积物耗氧率。桑沟湾5月和8月的沉积物耗氧率分别为15和24 mmol.m-2.d-1;胶州湾8月的沉积物耗氧率为18 mmol.m-2.d-1。回归分析表明,2个湾的沉积物耗氧率分别与沉积物表层的有机碳和总氮含量正相关。取呼吸商为0.8,得到桑沟湾底层对有机碳的矿化率占水层初级生产力的102%(5月)和67%(8月),胶州湾底层对有机碳的矿化率占水层初级生产力的28%(8月)。取桑沟湾颗粒有机碳的生物沉积速率为236 mg.m-2.d-1,得到底层对有机碳的埋置效率为40%(5月)和3%(8月),埋置的有机碳占水层初级生产力的69%(5月)和2%(8月);胶州湾颗粒有机碳的自然沉积速率为251 mg.m-2.d-1,底层对有机碳的埋置效率为32%(8月),埋置的有机碳占水层初级生产力的13%(8月)。  相似文献

The aim of this study was to provide a first insight on the incorporation of eight metals in the eggs of the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis via maternal transfer, using radiotracer techniques ((110m)Ag, (241)Am, (109)Cd, (60)Co, (134)Cs, (54)Mn, (75)Se and (65)Zn). The cuttlefish was fed daily with radiolabelled crabs for two weeks; it then started to spawn every three days. Among the eight tracers, only (110m)Ag, (75)Se and (65)Zn were significantly transferred to the eggs. The radiotracer distribution among the egg compartments showed that (75)Se and (65)Zn were accumulated mainly in the vitellus whereas (110m)Ag was found in similar proportion in the vitellus and the eggshell. During the embryonic development, (75)Se and (65)Zn contained in the vitellus were progressively transferred to the embryo, likely to supply its metabolic needs in these essential elements. Although it has no known biological functions, Ag contained in both vitellus and eggshell was also transferred to the embryo. Overall, our results showed that transfer of Ag, Se, and Zn does actually occur from a female cuttlefish to its eggs, at least during the last two weeks before spawning.  相似文献

Mountain regions of the humid tropics are characterized by steep slopes and heavy rains. These regions are thus prone to both high surface runoff and soil erosion. In Southeast Asia, uplands are also subject to rapid land-use change, predominantly as a result of increased population pressure and market forces. Since 1998, the Houay Pano site, located in northern Lao PDR (19.85°N 102.17°E) within the Mekong basin, aims at assessing the long-term impact of the conversion of traditional slash-and-burn cultivation systems to commercial perennial monocultures such as teak tree plantations, on the catchment hydrological response and sediment yield. The instrumented site monitors hydro-meteorological and soil loss parameters at both microplot (1 m2) and small catchment (0.6 km2) scales. The monitored catchment is part of the network of critical zone observatories named Multiscale TROPIcal CatchmentS (M-TROPICS). The data shared by M-TROPICS in Houay Pano are (1) rainfall, (2) air temperature, air relative humidity, wind speed, and global radiation, (3) catchment land use, (4) stream water level, suspended particulate matter, bed particulate matter and stones, (5) soil surface features, and (6) soil surface runoff and soil detachment. The dataset has already been used to interpret suspended particulate matter and bed particulate matter sources and dynamics, to assess the impact of land-use change on catchment hydrology, soil erosion, and sediment yields, to understand bacteria fate and weed seed transport across the catchment, and to build catchment-scale models focused on hydrology and water quality issues. The dataset may be further used to, for example, assess the role of headwater catchments in large tropical river basin hydrology, support the interpretation of new variables measured in the catchment (e.g., contaminants other than faecal bacteria), and assess the relative impacts of both climate and land-use change on the catchment.  相似文献

Low pressure-high temperature (LPHT) metamorphism, with geothermal gradients in the order of 50–100°C/km, is a common feature of the late evolution of collisional orogens. These abnormal thermal conditions may be the results of complex interactions between magmatism, metamorphism and deformation. The Agly massif, in the French Pyrenees, preserves the metamorphic footprints of the late Variscan thermal structure of an almost continuous section from the upper and middle continental crust. The upper crust is characterized by a very high geothermal gradient of ~55°C/km, evolving from greenschist to amphibolite facies, while the middle crust, exposed in a gneissic core, exhibits granulite facies conditions with a near isothermal geothermal gradient (<8°C/km) between 740 and 790°C. The abnormal and discontinuous crustal geothermal gradient, dated at c. 305 Ma on syn-granulitic monazite by LA-ICP-MS, is interpreted to be the result of magmatic intrusions at different structural levels in the crust: the Ansignan charnockite (c. 305 Ma) in the deepest part of the gneissic core, the Tournefort granodiorite (c. 308 Ma) at the interface between the gneissic core and the upper crust and the Saint-Arnac granite (c. 304 Ma) in the upper section of the massif. The heat input from these magmas combined with the thermal buffering effect of the biotite dehydration-melting reaction resulted in the near isothermal geothermal gradient in the gneissic core (melt-enhanced geotherm). The higher geothermal gradient (>50°C/km) in the upper crust is only due to conduction between the hot middle crust and the Earth's surface. The estimated maximum finite pressure range suggests that ~10 to 12 km of crust are exposed in the Agly massif while the present-day thickness does not exceed 5–6 km. This pressure/depth gap is consistent with the presence of several normal mylonitic shear zones that could have contributed to the subtraction of ~5 km of the rock pile. Monazite U–Th–Pb ages carried out on monazite overgrowths from a highly mylonitized sample suggest that this vertical thinning of the massif occurred at c. 296–300 Ma. This later Variscan extension might have slightly perturbed the 305 Ma geothermal gradient, resulting in an apparent higher conductive geothermal gradient in the upper crust. Although the Agly massif has been affected by Cretaceous extension and Eocene Alpine compression, we suggest that most of the present-day thickness of the column rock was acquired by the end of the Palaeozoic.  相似文献

This paper aims at characterizing how different key cloud properties (cloud fraction, cloud vertical distribution, cloud reflectance, a surrogate of the cloud optical depth) vary as a function of the others over the tropical oceans. The correlations between the different cloud properties are built from 2?years of collocated A-train observations (CALIPSO-GOCCP and MODIS) at a scale close to cloud processes; it results in a characterization of the physical processes in tropical clouds, that can be used to better understand cloud behaviors, and constitute a powerful tool to develop and evaluate cloud parameterizations in climate models. First, we examine a case study of shallow cumulus cloud observed simultaneously by the two sensors (CALIPSO, MODIS), and develop a methodology that allows to build global scale statistics by keeping the separation between clear and cloudy areas at the pixel level (250, 330?m). Then we build statistical instantaneous relationships between the cloud cover, the cloud vertical distribution and the cloud reflectance. The vertical cloud distribution indicates that the optically thin clouds (optical thickness <1.5) dominate the boundary layer over the trade wind regions. Optically thick clouds (optical thickness >3.4) are composed of high and mid-level clouds associated with deep convection along the ITCZ and SPCZ and over the warm pool, and by stratocumulus low level clouds located along the East coast of tropical oceans. The cloud properties are analyzed as a function of the large scale circulation regime. Optically thick high clouds are dominant in convective regions (CF?>?80?%), while low level clouds with low optical thickness (<3.5) are present in regimes of subsidence but in convective regimes as well, associated principally to low cloud fractions (CF?<?50?%). A focus on low-level clouds allows us to quantify how the cloud optical depth increases with cloud top altitude and with cloud fraction.  相似文献

Zircon-bearing xenoliths in continental basalts are often interpreted as witnesses of the continental basement uplifted during volcanic eruptions. Nevertheless, their origin is still debated. The Devès basaltic plateau belongs to the alkaline volcanic province of the French Massif Central. In few outcrops, zircon-bearing nepheline syenite xenoliths were preserved. U–Pb dating of the zircon crystals define an age of 956 ± 11 kyr constraining the crystallisation time of the zircons and consequently of the host xenoliths. This age, together with mineral chemistry arguments lead us to conclude that these minerals do not derive from a continental protolith. Rather, they likely result from the crystallisation of a liquid characterised by a nepheline–felspar composition and produced by the differentiation of a basaltic magma or, alternatively, by the low degree partial melting of a metasomatised lithospheric mantle. Such alkaline sialic rock and xenoliths may occur in large volumes at depth and generate the large amounts of zircon megacrysts discovered worldwide in secondary deposits within continental basaltic provinces.  相似文献

Despite the common belief that AuI complexes with hydrogen sulfide ligands (H2S/HS) are the major carriers of gold in natural hydrothermal fluids, their identity, structure and stability are still subjects of debate. Here we present the first in situ measurement, using X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, of the stability and structure of aqueous AuI–S complexes at temperatures and pressures (T–P) typical of natural sulfur-rich ore-forming fluids. The solubility of native gold and the local atomic structure around the dissolved metal in S–NaOH–Na2SO4–H2SO4 aqueous solutions were characterized at temperatures 200–450 °C and pressures 300–600 bar using an X-ray cell that allows simultaneous measurement of the absolute concentration of the absorbing atom (Au) and its local atomic environment in the fluid phase. Structural and solubility data obtained from XAFS spectra, combined with quantum-chemical calculations of species geometries, show that gold bis(hydrogensulfide) Au(HS)2 is the dominant Au species in neutral-to-basic solutions (5.5  pH  8.5; H2O–S–NaOH) over a wide range of sulfur concentrations (0.2 < ΣS < 3.6 mol/kg), in agreement with previous solubility studies. Our results provide the first direct determination of this species structure, in which two sulfur atoms are in a linear geometry around AuI at an average distance of 2.29 ± 0.01 Å. At acidic conditions (1.5  pH  5.0; H2O–S–Na2SO4–H2SO4), the Au atomic environment determined by XAFS is similar to that in neutral solutions. These findings, together with measured high Au solubilities, are inconsistent with the predominance of the gold hydrogensulfide Au(HS)0 complex suggested by recent solubility studies. Our spectroscopic data and quantum-chemical calculations imply the formation of species composed of linear S–Au–S moieties, like the neutral [H2S–Au–SH] complex. This species may account for the elevated Au solubilities in acidic fluids and vapors with H2S concentrations higher than 0.1–0.2 mol/kg. However, because of the complex sulfur speciation in acidic solutions that involves sulfite, thiosulfate and polysulfide species, the formation of AuI complexes with these ligands (e.g., AuHS(SO2)0, Au(HS2O3)2, Au(HSn)2) cannot be ruled out. The existence of such species may significantly enhance Au transport by high T–P acidic ore-forming fluids and vapors, responsible for the formation of a major part of the gold resources on Earth.  相似文献

Andosols on the island of Réunion have high nickel (Ni) concentrations due to the natural pedo-geochemical background. Enhanced knowledge of Ni speciation is necessary to predict the bioavailability and potential toxicity of this element. Ni speciation in these andosols, marked by the presence of high amounts of natural aluminosilicate nanoparticles, was investigated in two complementary systems: (i) In a soil sample—densimetric fractionation was first performed in order to separate the potential bearing phases, prior to Ni speciation characterization. (ii) In a synthetic sample—Ni reactivity with synthetic aluminosilicate nanoparticle analogs were studied. In both cases, Ni speciation was determined using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The results revealed that Ni had the same local environment in both systems (natural and synthetic systems), and Ni was chemically linked to natural short-range ordered aluminosilicates or analogs. This complex represented about 75% of the total Ni in the studied soil.  相似文献
