The structure of the Hercynian collision zone in the southeast of the Armorican Massif is illustrated by a 70-km long deep seismic profile acquired in September 2000. The profile images a previously unknown south-dipping thrust that brought the Champtoceaux Domain on top of the Central Armorican Domain during Carboniferous times. Dextral strike-slip motions along the South Armorican Shear Zone, which is downward cut by the thrust zone, are partly coeval with northward thrusting. A major discontinuity, hidden by the thrust front, is also imaged in the lower crust between the Champtoceaux area and the Central Armorican Domain. Cap-Tourmente tidal flat is located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence middle estuary, 50 km downstream from Quebec city, Canada. Seasonal variations in sedient accretion were studied during the period without ice from May to December, using horizontal plates in conjunction with vertical stakes. The sedimentological regime which is characterized by very rapid changes, can be divided into four periods. There are two periods of intense erosion in May and October–November; during these months, erosion is initiated by walking and beak probing of very large flocks of snow geese. During the summer, very rapid accretion occurs for approximately 100 days; during this period, the sedimentation rate is 2 mm per day in the lower section of the tidal marsh which is covered with vegetation. Among the numerous factors influencing the sedimentation cycle, the very gradual slope of the upper part of the flat (0.25%) seems to be one of the most important because it results in a very large area (550 m wide) which is protected from strong tidal currents. This latter area is covered with dense and high vegetation which provides an effective protection against erosion unitl the snow geese arrive in October and raze it in a few days. The presence of vegetation reduces the velocities of tidal currents, particularly during ebb and modifies their direction for both flood and ebb, orienting them perpendicularly to the main tidal flow.  相似文献

The Taillon Glacier in the French Pyrénées offers one of the most detailed records of recent glacier fluctuations in the region. A comprehensive collection of early maps, paintings, and photographs, together with short-term measurements relating to the ice margins and glacier behavior, have made possible a full reconstruction of the glacier's history since the end of the 19th century. The general pattern of ice-front retreat has been punctuated by a series of significant local readvances, dated 1886–1890, 1906–1911, 1926–1928, 1945, and 1964. The record is compared with the more detailed histories of glaciers from the Alps, and signals a surprising degree of sensitivity for the Taillon Glacier, given its overall size and state of survival. Time-dependent response of deep tunnels is studied considering the progressive degradation of the mechanical properties of the rock mass. The constitutive model is based on a rock-aging law for the uniaxial strength of the rock and for the Young’s modulus. A semi-analytical solution is developed for the stresses and displacements around a deep circular tunnel taking into account the face advance. The evolution of the plastic and damage zones over time is determined. Numerical examples are presented for the case of Saint-Martin-La-Porte access adit in France of the Lyon–Turin Base Tunnel. The computed results which are compared with the field data in terms of the convergence of tunnel wall and of the displacements inside the rock mass monitored by multi-point extensometers show the efficiency of the approach to simulate the time-dependent deformation of a tunnel excavated in squeezing ground. Simple relationships are proposed to evaluate the parameters of the constitutive model directly from those of the empirical convergence law presented in previous work.  相似文献

The degree to which satellite altimetry may extend its contributions to geophysics will depend on the accuracy of corrected altitudes, on the precision of orbit corrections, on exact geoid representation and on our ability to separate independent oceanic processes affecting sea surface elevations. The barotropic tide-namely the oceanic response to gravitational driving which maintains its phase lock with gravitational forces and which is always exactly predictable-constitutes a fundamental phenomenon in itself. Indirectly it tends to obscure in altimetric data other processes such as solid earth tides, large scale ocean circulation and climatic response of the ocean. The most realistic hope of obtaining the necessary predictive information on global oceanic tides resides in the construction of complete and accurate cotidal and corange maps. The importance of direct observations of open ocean tides in achieving this goal is stressed using an array of seafloor pressure data from the NE Pacific. Among more general results, the locations of long postulated semidiurnal amphidromes in the area are defined with an accuracy of one degree or less for M2 and S2. The importance of observations over a sufficient spatial coverage in tuning mathematical simulations of tides is illustrated. Ten new sets of tidal constants for the NE Pacific are tabulated.  相似文献

Abstract. In this article, we compare biomass results for three fish species (Symphodus ocellatus, Serranus scriba and Diplodus annularis) between May 1993 and May 2000 in the Bonifacio Strait Marine Reserve. The data were obtained from seagrass meadows using the visual census method. A randomised procedure was used to test the null hypothesis of biomass equality. To this end, decreasing sample sizes were used for the May 2000 data to determine the sample size necessary to reject the null hypothesis (5 % level). For Symphodus ocellatus, 10 samples (fixed points) were necessary to reject the null hypothesis, whereas 15 samples were required for Diplodus annularis. The null hypothesis was never rejected for Serranus scriba regardless of the sample size considered.
These results are discussed, as is the power statistical analysis proposed by Ortiz (2002; this issue, pp. 1 – 9) , to determine the optimal sample size necessary to detect perturbation effects in the marine environment. Although the power analysis is certainly a useful method to determine the sampling design in assessment the effect of marine reserves on fish biomass, the magnitude of the marine reserve effect remains problematic in ecology.  相似文献
