A recently discovered mechanism for producing step-like structure in a fluid's density field is explored under controlled laboratory conditions. Measurements of the conditions under which these “layers” exist, their direction, wavelength, and growth rate, are made and compared to the predictions of instability theory. The good agreement indicates that the layers are a result of a diffusive instability of a geostrophic shear flow. The instability can occur at higher and higher Richardson numbers, as the Schmidt number (ratio of diffusivities of momentum and salt) increases. Comparison of the density and velocity fields in the presence and absence of fully developed layers indicates that the instability functions mainly to transport momentum. Extrapolation of the measured wavelength to midlatitude oceanic conditions suggests that the momentum-density diffusive instability may play a role in producing meter-size oceanic microstructure.  相似文献

Marked variations in the chemical and mineralogical composition of sediments at Site 319 have occurred during the 15 M.y. history of sedimentation at this site. The change in composition through time parallels the variability observed in surface sediments from various parts of the Nazca Plate and can be related to variations in the proportion of hydrothermal, hydrogenous, detrital and biogenous phases reaching this site at different times. Metal accumulation rates at Site 319 reach a maximum near the basement for most elements, suggesting a strong hydrothermal contribution during the early history of this site. The hydrothermal contribution decreased rapidly as Site 319 moved away from the spreading center, although a subtle increase in this source is detectable about the time spreading began on the East Pacific Rise. The most recent sedimentation exhibits a strong detritalhydrogenous influence. Post-depositional diagenesis of amorphous phases has converted them to ironrich smectite and well-crystallized goethite without significantly altering the bulk composition of the sediment.  相似文献

A paleomagnetic record of the geomagnetic field during its change of polarity from the reversed Matuyama epoch to the normal Brunhes epoch has been obtained from sediments of ancient Lake Tecopa in southeastern California. The polarity switch occurs in siltstone of uniform composition, and anhysteretic magnetization experiments indicate that the magnetic mineralogy does not change markedly across the transition. Within the transition interval, intensity of the magnetization drops to a minimum of 10% of the intensity after the transition. The interval of low field intensity preceded and lasted longer than the interval during which the field direction reversed, the latter being shorter than the interval of low intensity by a factor of at least 2.5. The VGP's make a smooth transit from reversed to normal polarity, with the path lying in the sector of longitude between 30°E and 60°W. Pole paths for the Brunhes-Matuyama transition recorded in California and Japan are completely different, indicating that the dipole field decayed. The transition field appears to be nondipolar, and there is no evidence for an equatorial component. Since there is little dispersion of the VGP's about a great circle path, it is possible that large-scale drift of the nondipole field ceased during this polarity transition.  相似文献

The common assumption that the in-situ dry bulk density of pelagic sediments is 0.7–0.75 g cm?3 can produce errors as great as 300–400% in metal accumulation rates. The best approach to obtain accumulation rates is to measure wet bulk density and water content. We show in this paper that if this is not possible, reasonable density and water content estimates in southeast Pacific sediments can be obtained from the CaCO3 content of the sample. Although the specific equations derived in this paper do not apply to all areas of the ocean, the technique shown here can be used to take into account the special characteristics of any given sedimentary province and produce reasonable accumulation rate estimates.  相似文献

Channel geometry, flow and sedimentation in a meander bend of the River South Esk were studied from bankfull stages (January–February) to low water stages (May) in 1974. Bed topography varied little over the study period, showing a typical pool and ripple geometry. Variation of mean depth and velocity with discharge differed from section to section around the bend, due primarily to locally varying flow resistance with stage. The flow pattern for all stages was dominated by a single spiral over the point bar, with a development zone at the bend entrance. Deviation of bed shear stress from the mean flow direction was in general accord with theory, especially for high stages. The use of a uniform longitudinal water surface slope in the calculation of bed shear stress is not justified because of a complicated water surface topography, also such calculated shear may not represent effective bed shear on grains, as it accounts also for energy losses associated with secondary flows. Dunes covered much of the bar at high stages, with increasing proportions of ripples, sand ribbons and lower phase plane beds at low stages. Local flow resistance generally decreases from dunes, diminished and ripple-backed dunes, ripples, sand ribbons to plane beds, and bed forms are predicted quite well by the stream power-grain size scheme. Mean size, sorting and skewness of sediment over the bed changes little with stage. In general, size decreases, sorting improves and skewness changes from positive to negative from the talweg to the inner bank, and in the downstream direction. Allen's (1970a, b) force balance equation for moving bed load particles is supported for bankfull stage, with some reservations, and textural characteristics are explained by progressive sorting in the direction of sediment transport. Large-scale trough cross stratification (with some flat bedding) formed at high stage by dunes (and lower phase plane beds) dominates the point bar sediments. Alternations of fine-medium sand (often cross-laminated) and vegetation-rich layers result from periodic deposition on the grassed upper bar surface. Fining upwards sequences produced by lateral channel migration are modified by a coarsening upward subsequence in the upstream bar region where spiral flow is developing from the bend upstream.  相似文献

We investigate certain brightness variations seen in Saturn's A ring and find them to be due to vertical corrugations of the local ring plane caused by a spiral bending wave. This wave is resonantly excited by Mimas and propagates inward via the collective gravity of the ring particles. B. A. Smith et al. [Science212, 163–191 (1981)] had previously associated vertical relief with this feature due to its observed azimuthal variations and its proximity to an inclination resonance with Mimas. We develop the theory of forced bending waves, some aspects of which have been treated in the galactic context by C. Hunter and A. Toomre [Astrophys. J.155, 747–776 (1969)] and by G. Bertin and J.W.-K. Mark [Astron. Astrophys.88, 289–297 (1980)]. Our theory is in good agreement with the observations. In particular, the presence of these bending waves may resolve the conflict between ground-based estimates of 1–2 km for the global ring thickness [e.g., A. Brahic and B. Sicardy, Nature289, 447–450 (1981)] and Voyager stellar occultation measurements of <200 m for the local ring thickness [A. L. Lane et al., Science215, 537–543 (1982); E. A. Marouf and G. L. We have developed a model of the response of the outer Oort cloud of comets to simultaneous tidal perturbations of the adiabatic galactic force and a stellar impulse. The six-dimensional phase space of near-parabolic comet orbital elements has been subdivided into cells. A mapping of the evolution of these elements from beyond the loss cylinder boundary into the inner planetary region over the course of a single orbit is possible. This is done by treating each perturbation separately, and in combination, during a time interval of 5 Myr. We then obtain the time dependence of a wide range of observable comet flux characteristics, which provides a fingerprint of the dynamics. These include the flux distributions of energy, perihelion distance, major axis orientation, and angular momentum orientation. Correlations between these variables are also determined. We show that substantive errors occur if one superposes the separately obtained flux results of the galactic tide and the stellar impulse rather than superposing the tidal and impulsive perturbations in a single analysis. Detailed illustrations are given for an example case where the stellar mass and relative velocity have the ratio M∗/Vrel=0.043 M⊙/km s−1 and the solar impact parameter is 45,000 AU. This case has features similar to the impending Gliese 710 impulse with the impact parameter selected to be close to the low end of the predicted range. We find that the peak in the observable comet flux exceeds that due to the galactic tide alone by ≈41%. We also present results for the time dependence of the flux enhancements and for the mean encounter frequency of weak stellar impulse events as functions of M∗/Vrel and solar impact parameter.  相似文献
