The subsidence of the Tyrrhenian Basin is analysed based on numerous MCS reflection data and related seismic velocities, and calibrated using subsidence curves versus time at ODP Leg 107 sites 654 and 652 on the Sardinian margin. Two main phases of rifting are clearly defined for the margin-basin evolution: the first, beginning at 7 Ma, split the Sardinian-Calabrian margins, the second, beginning at 5 Ma formed the Central oceanic subbasins.Thermal models, based on thinned crust geometry from reflection-refraction data, are used which consider both vertical and horizontal conduction over time along a NW-SE transect across the entire Tyrrhenian Basin from Sardinia to Calabria. In general, there is a close agrrement between the predicted and the observed surface heat flow and the rate of subsidence over time. However, within the oceanic domain an initial subsidence must be chosen about 1000 m greater than observed on typical spreading centers, i.e., at about 3500 m as postulated in numerous back-arc basins.Thermal models, constrained by subsidence analysis and gravity observations, imply a large difference for the Moho depth beneath the Sardinian margin as determined after refraction seismic experiments. The upper mantle, hot but with high density, would be situated much higher than is postulated by seismic data and probably includes 7.3–7.4 km/s velocity layers previously interpreted as deep crustal layers. 相似文献

Dredged samples have been studied to establish the stratigraphy as well as the probable paleogeographic evolution of the sedimentary cover of Galicia Bank, and Vigo and Porto Seamounts. The sedimentation appears to have been neritic up to the Late Jurassic. These structural features evolved separately from the Iberic continental margin in Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous times. Part of the sediments is made of calpionellid limestones, which is indicative of open marine conditions in this area of the Atlantic at that time. This also suggests the establishment of marine connections between this area and the “Mésogée”. These open marine conditions would have persisted since the Early Cretaceous. 相似文献

Ten rock samples were dredged during the Banda Sea I cruise in the northern slope of the Sinta Ridge, which separates the North and South Banda basins. Some of the samples are limestones from a very shallow marine environment, with Upper Norian (to Rhaetian?) benthic Foraminifera. Similarities with eastern Sulawesi, Buru and Seram are consistent with an independant Upper Triassic block and the origin of the Banda Sea microcontinents is questionable. 相似文献

A Deep-sea Channel in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea: Morphology and seismic structure of the Valencia Channel and its surroundings 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

The 400 km long Valencia Channel occupies the axis of the Valencia Trough in the Northwestern Mediterranean. Four different types of seismic reflection profiles were used to analyze the morphology and structure of the Valencia Channel with regard to the role played by both margins, Balearic and Iberian, of the Valencia Trough. From a detailed morphoseismic analysis of the Valencia Channel, its upper, middle, and lower courses can be characterized as follows: (1) in the upper course, tributaries are short and only slightly incised, with recent mass-transport deposits occurring on the adjacent continental slopes; (2) in the middle course, the channel deepens, and tributary valleys merge into it; and (3) the lower course begins after a sudden change in the direction of the channel, has a meandering path, is flanked by levees, and is fed by some valleys.During the Pliocene and Quaternary, at least four erosional and filling phases are observed in seismic profiles of the lower course of the Valencia Channel. The varying intensity of mass-transport processes and associated retrogressive slumping, which are related with fluctuations in sediment supply and relative sea-level changes, have played a major role in the formation, maintenance and deepening of the Valencia Channel. In addition to these sedimentary processes, a basement tectonic control and some morphostructural features affect the direction of the Valencia Channel locally. 相似文献

The stratigraphy of the Black Sea western margin is revisited through seismic data acquired during two French-Romanian surveys. These data are calibrated by industrial and DSDP drillings; they display several major discontinuities regarded as Tertiary erosional surfaces. The major seismic discontinuity underlines the base of Miocene formations and corresponds to a composite surface including at least three erosional phases ranging from Oligocene to Pontian times. Moreover, a Messinian erosional surface is clearly identified. This is in agreement with the Hsü's proposition [Palaeogeogr. Palaeoclimatol. Palaeoecol. 29 (1979) 75–93] suggesting a Messinian sea-level drop of Black Sea related to the Messinian Salinity Crisis described in the Mediterranean Sea. To cite this article: H. Gillet et al., C.
