Seasonal variation patterns of aboveground and belowground biomass, net primary production, and nutrient accumulation were assessed inAtriplex portulacoides L. andLimoniastrum monopetalum (L.) Boiss. in Castro Marim salt marsh, Portugal. Sampling was conducted for five periods during 2001–2002 (autumn, winter, spring, summer, and autumn). This study indicates that both species have a clear seasonal variation pattern for both aboveground and belowground biomass. Mean live biomass was 2516 g m−2 yr−1 forL. monopetalum and 598 g m−2 yr−1 forA. portulacoides. Peak living biomass, in spring for both species, was three times greater in the former, 3502 g m−2 yr−1, than in the latter, 1077 g m−2 yr−1. For both the Smalley (Groenendijk 1984) and Weigert and Evans (1964) methods, productivity ofL. monopetalum (2917 and 3635 g m−2 yr−1, respectively) was greater than that ofA. portulacoides (1002 and 1615 g m−2 yr−1, respectively). Belowground biomass ofL. monopetalum was 1.7 times greater than that ofA. portulacoides. In spite of this, the root:shoot ratio forA. monopetalum to aerial components. Leaf area index was similar for both species, but specific leaf area ofA. portulacoides was twice that ofL. monopetalum. The greatest nutrient contents were found in leaves. Leaf nitrogen content was maximum in summer for both species (14.6 mg g−1 forA. portulacoides and 15.5 mg g−1 forL. monopetalum). Leaf phosphorus concentration was minimum in summer (1.1 mg g−1 inA. portulacoides and 1.2 mg g−1 inL. monopetalum). Leaf potassium contents inA. portulacoides were around three times greater than inL. monopetalum. Leaf calcium contents inL. monopetalum were three times greater than inA. portulacoides. There was a pronounced seasonal variation of calcium content in the former, while in the latter no clear variation was registered. Both species exhibited a decrease in magnesium leaf contents in the summer period. Mangamese content inL. monopetalum leaves was tenfold that inA. portulacoides. Seasonal patterns of nutrient contents inA. portulacoides andL. monopetalum suggest that availability of these elements was not a limiting factor to biomass production.  相似文献

Carbon and Sr-isotope profiles in Upper Cambrian platformal carbonate Formations in the Precordillera, western Argentina (Zonda, La Flecha and La Silla Formations), were constructed for three representative sections: (a) Quebrada de la Flecha, Eastern Precordillera, (b) Cerro La Silla, Central Precordillera and (c) Quebrada de La Angostura, northern part of the Central Precordillera.

At Quebrada de La Angostura, upper part of the La Flecha Formation, δ13Ccarb varies continuously up-section from − 2.0 to + 5.6‰ (PDB) and records the SPICE anomaly (+ 5‰) reported for the first time in South America. The peak of this excursion is characterized by intercalated 2 m thick beds of black shale with marl and limestone that record the onset of a sea-level change.

The Steptoean Zonda Formation dolomites at the Quebrada de la Flecha exhibit a total δ13C range from − 2.7 to + 0.6‰ with discrete positive anomaly about 200 m from the transition to the overlying Sunwaptan La Flecha Formation. Pronounced C-isotope anomaly (− 5.6‰) is observed in the La Flecha Formation at about 300 m below the transition to the La Silla Formation.

At the Cerro La Silla section, the Zonda Formation exhibit δ13C values of  − 1‰, increasing slightly at the transition to the La Flecha Formation (− 1 to 0‰). The transition of the La Flecha to the La Silla Formations is characterized by alternation of black shales and dolomitic limestone with a discrete positive C-isotope excursion, probably corresponding to the SPICE.

At the Quebrada de La Flecha, 87Sr/86Sr for the Zonda Formation varies from 0.70924 to 0.70955 and for the La Flecha Formation from 0.70908 to 0.70942. At Cerro La Silla this ratio varies from 0.70914 to 0.70923 for the La Flecha Formation, and from 0.70898 to 0.70980 for the La Silla Formation. At the Quebrada de La Angostura, ratios for the La Flecha carbonates range from 0.70918 to 0.70993. The overall variation of 87Sr/86Sr is consistent with globally reported Upper Cambrian seawater values at ca. 500 Ma.

The unambiguous record of SPICE in the La Flecha Formation at the Quebrada de La Angostura supports a Steptoean age for its deposition and allows precise local, regional, and global stratigraphic correlation. The pronounced negative C-isotope excursion recorded in the La Flecha Formation carbonates at the Quebrada de La Flecha is likely equivalent to that registered in Sunwaptan carbonates of North America and Australia, and might be tied to a global event, as a valuable tool in stratigraphic correlation (SNICE, acronym for Sunwaptan negative isotope carbon excursion).  相似文献

This study analyses beach morphological change during six consecutive storms acting on the meso‐tidal Faro Beach (south Portugal) between 15 December 2009 and 7 January 2010. Morphological change of the sub‐aerial beach profile was monitored through frequent topographic surveys across 11 transects. Measurements of the surf/swash zone dimensions, nearshore bar dynamics, and wave run‐up were extracted from time averaged and timestack coastal images, and wave and tidal data were obtained from offshore stations. All the information combined suggests that during consecutive storm events, the antecedent morphological state can initially be the dominant controlling factor of beach response; while the hydrodynamic forcing, and especially the tide and surge levels, become more important during the later stages of a storm period. The dataset also reveals the dynamic nature of steep‐sloping beaches, since sub‐aerial beach volume reductions up to 30 m3/m were followed by intertidal area recovery (–2 < z < 3 m) with rates reaching ~10 m3/m. However, the observed cumulative dune erosion and profile pivoting imply that storms, even of regular intensity, can have a dramatic impact when they occur in groups. Nearshore bars seemed to respond to temporal scales more related to storm sequences than to individual events. The formation of a prominent crescentic offshore bar at ~200 m from the shoreline appeared to reverse the previous offshore migration trend of the inner bar, which was gradually shifted close to the seaward swash zone boundary. The partially understood nearshore bar processes appeared to be critical for storm wave attenuation in the surf zone; and were considered mainly responsible for the poor interpretation of the observed beach behaviour on the grounds of standard, non‐dimensional, morphological parameters. Urban systems are characterized by very complex interactions. After an earthquake, a wide variety of services, networks and urban facilities may be unavailable to the public during the system failure and recovery processes, thereby causing disruptions in the basic social needs of the affected area. After a disaster, communities face several challenges. For example, the lack of education may impose population migrations, or malfunctions in the electricity distribution system can produce electrical power outages of varying duration with respect to time and space, which generates consequences in the water distribution system, transportation, communications, etc. A methodology called the Disruption index (DI), based on graph theory, includes these multiple interdependencies. It has been developed to estimate the dysfunction of some fundamental dimensions of urban systems on a broad level, starting with the physical damages directly suffered by the exposed assets, proceeding to the impacts that each node has on the functional performance of the nodes depending on them, until reaching the top node. This paper presents the fundamental theory to support the DI concept. The DI provides the likely impacts and consequences of an earthquake in an urban area to fulfill hazard mitigation and provide civil protection agencies and local and state governments with a new decision-making instrument to reduce or prevent severe and recurrent impacts. The DI concept can also be extended to other natural and man-made disasters and may be used as a tool for optimizing the resources of the system components.  相似文献

Fisheries and aquaculture are important sources of food for hundreds of millions of people around the world. World fish production is projected to increase by 15% in the next 10 years, reaching around 200 million tonnes per year. The main driver of this increase will be based on fish farming management in developing countries. In Brazil, fish farming is increasing due to the climate conditions and large supply of water resources, with the production system based on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) farming in reservoirs. Inland waters like reservoirs are a natural source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. However, knowledge of the impact from intensive fish production in net cages on CH4 fluxes is not well known. This paper presents in situ measurements of CH4 fluxes and dissolved CH4 (DM) in the Furnas Hydroelectric Reservoir in order to evaluate the impact of fish farming on methane emissions. Measurements were taken in a control area without fish production and three areas with fish farming. The overall mean of diffusive methane flux (DMF) (5.9?±?4.5 mg CH4 m?2 day?1) was significantly lower when compared to the overall mean of bubble methane flux (BMF) (552.9?±?1003.9 mg CH4 m?2 day?1). The DMF and DM were significantly higher in the two areas with fish farming, whereas the BMF was not significantly different. The DMF and DM were correlated to depth and chlorophyll-a. However, the low production of BMF did not allow the comparison with the limnological parameters measured. This case study shows that CH4 emissions are influenced more by reservoir characteristics than fish production. Further investigation is necessary to assess the impact of fish farming on the greenhouse gas emissions.  相似文献

The current study aims to do a comparative analysis of the results obtained with two End-Member(EM)grain-size modeling techniques(AnalySize and BasEMMA)and the Environmental Sensitive Grain-Size(ESGS)modeling for sediment samples collected in the mudbelts of the southern Brazilian shelf.The methods were compared using grain-size data from the south Brazilian shelf,and the results are discussed here.It is the first time that the concept of ESGS,in its present form,is utilized outside China.The results show that despite its relative ease of use,the ESGS is not fully comparable to the EM analyses,and only two grain-size ESGS classes were recognized as analogous to EMs.The comparison of the AnalySize and BasEMMA procedures also revealed significant differences between the techniques.A comparative analysis between the two EM techniques revealed advantages in the BasEMMA,especially in the better correlation of the end-members with the original grain size distribution.The analysis of the geographical distribution of the EM abundances allowed point sources of sandy populations to be recognized as well as the contribution of the Rio de la Plata as a source of silty sediments to be inferred.  相似文献

This study presents sand activation depth (SAD) measurements recently obtained on two contrasting beaches located along the Atlantic coast of France: the gently sloping, high-energy St Trojan beach where wave incidence is usually weak, and the steep, low-energy Arçay Sandspit beach where waves break at highly oblique angles. Comparisons between field measurements and predictions from existing formulae show good agreement for St Trojan beach but underestimate the SAD on the Arçay Sandspit beach by 40–60%. Such differences suggest a strong influence of wave obliquity on SAD. To verify this hypothesis, the relative influence of wave parameters was investigated by means of numerical modelling. A quasi-linear increase of SAD with wave height was confirmed for shore-normal and slightly oblique wave conditions, and a quasi-linear increase in SAD with wave obliquity was also revealed. Combining the numerical results with previously published relations, both a new semi-empirical and an empirical formula for the prediction of SAD were developed which showed good SAD predictions under conditions of oblique wave breaking. This paper presents a case study of the protection areas of one of the Portugal's most important spas. According to its chemical composition this thermal mineral water is rich in bicarbonate, sodium, carbonate, fluor and sulfate. The therapeutic indications are mainly illnesses related to rheumatism and respiratory system. As a complement the thermal mineral water is also used for geothermal purposes, as in the heating of greenhouses for the production of Bananas and Ananas. The study presents geological and hydrogeological characterization of the area and its vulnerability to pollution and the physical and chemical characterization of the thermal mineral water. Finally, in accordance with the Portuguese legislation, the protection areas are defined: for immediate, intermediate and distant zones. The criteria and other aspects that led to their definition are also presented.  相似文献

The seismic vulnerability assessment of old masonry buildings is essential not only to buildings with recognised historical and heritage value but also to ordinary residential masonry buildings. This paper approaches the seismic vulnerability assessment of masonry buildings by applying a simplified methodology to the old city centre of Seixal in Portugal. The methodology adopted in this study was based on a vulnerability index used for the evaluation of damage and the study of loss scenarios on a large scale. Over 500 buildings were assessed using this methodology, and the results were analysed using an integrated Geographical Information System tool. The integration of the vulnerability and loss results could allow city councils or regional authorities to plan interventions based on a global view of the site under analysis, leading to more accurate and comprehensive risk mitigation strategies that support the requirements of safety and emergency planning.  相似文献
