This study assesses temperatures of formation of common granulitesby combining experimental constraints on the P–T stabilityof granulite-facies mineral associations with a garnet–orthopyroxene(Grt–Opx) thermobarometry scheme based on Al-solubilityin Opx, corrected for late Fe–Mg exchange. We appliedthis scheme to 414 granulites of mafic, intermediate and aluminousbulk compositions. Our findings suggest that granulites aremuch hotter than traditionally assumed and that the P–Tconditions of the amphibolite–granulite transition portrayedin current petrology textbooks are significant underestimatesby over 100°C. For aluminous and intermediate granulites,mean corrected temperatures based on our method are 890 ±17 and 841 ± 11°C, respectively (uncertainties reportedas 95% confidence limits on the mean), consistent with minimumtemperatures for orthopyroxene production by fluid-absent partialmelting in these bulk compositions. In contrast, mean temperaturesbased on Grt–Opx Fe–Mg exchange equilibria, usingthe same thermodynamic data, are 732 ± 22 and 723 ±11°C, respectively, well below the minimum temperaturesfor Opx stability. For mafic granulites, the mean correctedtemperature using our method is 816 ± 12°C, similarto the mean temperature of 793 ± 13°C from Fe–Mgexchange. Reasons for the differences between the mafic granulitesand aluminous–intermediate granulites are unclear butmay be due to the lower Al concentrations in Opx in the maficrocks and possible deficiencies in the thermodynamic modellingof these low concentrations. We discuss a number of well-knowngranulite terrains in the context of our findings, includingthe Adirondacks, the Acadian granulites of New England, theincipient charnockites of southern India and Sri Lanka, andthe Kerala Khondalite Belt. Our findings carry implicationsfor thermotectonic models of granulite formation. 本文利用远震P波及SH波和区域地震P_(nl)波波形反演方法,测定了华北9次强震的断层面解、震源深度及地震矩.结合其他作者测定的7次地震的结果,分析了华北16次强震断层面解及华北地震震源深度特征.结果表明,华北多数强震为走滑型地震,也有个别正断层型及逆断层型地震;16次地震多数发生在地壳中部10-25km深度范围内.  相似文献

Molar tooth (MT) structures are enigmatic, contorted millimetre‐ to decimetre‐long veins and spheroids of microcrystalline calcite that formed during very early diagenesis in Precambrian sediments. MT structures in the ca 2·6 Ga Monteville Formation are 600–800 Myr older than previously reported occurrences and establish that conditions necessary for MT genesis were met locally throughout much of the Precambrian. In the Monteville Formation, MT structures were formed shallow subtidally, extending to depths near storm wave base, in shale host sediments intercalated with storm‐generated carbonate sand lenses. They are filled with microcrystalline calcite and rare pyrite. Microcrystalline calcite identical to that in MT structures fills other pore space, including porosity between grains in carbonate sand lenses, moldic porosity in sand grains, sheet cracks in columnar stromatolites, and shallow cracks on sandy bedding planes. Relationships in the Monteville Formation demonstrate that microcrystalline CaCO3 precipitated in fluid‐filled cracks and pores; microcrystalline calcite characteristics, as well as the paucity of carbonate mud in host rocks, are inconsistent with injection of lime mud as the origin of MT structures. Locally, MT cracks were filled by detrital sediment before or during precipitation. Precipitation occurred in stages, and MT CaCO3 evolved from granular cores to a rigid mass of cores with overgrowths – allowing both plastic and brittle deformation of MT structures, as well as reworking of eroded MT structures as rigid clasts and lime mud. Crystal size distributions and morphology suggest that cores precipitated through nucleation, Ostwald ripening and size‐dependent crystal growth, whereas overgrowths formed during size‐independent crystal growth.  相似文献

Olivine crystals in basalt contain helium that can be extractedfor isotopic analysis. Helium-bearing olivine phenocrysts inpicritic tholeiites from the Juan Fernandez Islands, SE Pacific,crystallized from moderately differentiated liquids. None arexenocrysts of mantle peridotite. The helium occurs in cavitiesor bubbles in inclusions best seen at high magnification inthe olivine. The olivine grew around spinel, sulfide, and bubblesthat preferentially nucleated on crystal surfaces. Inclusionswithin these phases range from large cavities to tiny, facetedpits arranged in rows. Many crystals contain curving trainsof inclusions along annealed features. The inclusions formedduring mixing between cooler differentiated magma and hotterolivine-charged magma, which accelerated vesiculation. Bubblesnucleated on the olivine as they do on ice when stirred in carbonatedwater. Mixing also induced thermal stress fracturing, like thecracking of ice dropped into water. Cracking, irregular extinction,and subgrain formation occurred when faceted crystals collidedwith each other or with conduit walls. Boundary layer meltsand bubbles were drawn quickly into the fractures. Thus fewinclusions contain equilibrium proportions of minerals and vapor.Mantle-derived helium clearly permeated into shallow storagereservoirs, including rift zones where magmatic differentiation,mixing, and vapor exsolution were fairly extensive. Where the Holyoke flood-basalt flow in the Mesozoic HartfordBasin in Connecticut is thick and contains coarse-grained, horizontalsegregation sheets in its central part, the lower part of theflow is strongly depleted in incompatible elements; where theflow is thin and contains no segregation sheets it is homogeneousthroughout. This chemical variation can be explained only throughcompaction of the partly crystallized basalt. The compositionof the segregation sheets shows that they separated from thebasalt following only 33% crystallization. The segregation sheets,however, are clearly intrusive into the basalt, which must thereforehave already formed a crystal mush with finite strength at thislow degree of crystallinity. The incompatible element concentrationsindicate that the partly crystallized basalt underwent as muchas 28% compaction in the lowest 60 m of the flow. Between 60and 130 m above the base of the flow, the crystal mush becamedilated, and eventually ruptured with formation of the segregationsheets. No segregation sheet has a composition indicating separationafter more than 33% crystallization of the basalt. Electron microprobe analyses of coexisting amphiboles, garnet,and cordierite in specimens collected from a single outcropprovide the basis for phase diagrams thought to be representativeof fixed external conditions in the sillimanite zone. A projectionthrough the compositions of quartz and plagioclase is employedto characterize the mineral facies and to facilitate comparisonswith other metamorphic terrains. Limiting recalculations whichbracket the possible range of Fe+3 contents in calcic amphiboleanalyses by electron probe permit an additional projection throughthe composition of magnetite, a ubiquitous phase. From thesedata the apparent non-ideality exhibited by various combinationsof coexisting cumming-tonite, anthophyllite, gedrite, and calcicamphibole is explained by intracrystalline cation ordering.  相似文献

This research reconstructs ice-sheet processes operating during the Late Devensian in northeast England. The article assesses the lithostratigraphy of the Devensian glacial tills of Whitburn Bay, eastern County Durham, and presents the first detailed analysis of petrological, geochemical and biostratigraphical data to reconstruct lithostratigraphy, provenance and iceflow pathways. Two Devensian tractions tills (the Blackhall and Horden tills) are separated by a boulder pavement, pointing to a switch in ice-bed conditions and the production of a melt-out lag prior to deposition of the upper traction till, the Horden Till. The Blackhall Till contains Magnesian Limestone, Carboniferous Limestone, Whin Sill dolerite and Old Red Sandstone, suggesting a northwesterly source, probably from the Midland Valley and the Southern Uplands. The Horden Till contains erratics and heavy minerals derived from crystalline bedrock sources in the Cheviot Hills and northeast Scotland. Within the Horden Till are numerous sand, clay and gravel-filled canals incised downwards into the diamicton which are attributed to a low-energy, distributed, subglacial canal drainage system. Coupled with hydro-fractures and the boulder pavement, this suggests that a partially decoupled, fast-flowing ice stream deposited the Horden Till. The uphill, landward direction of ice movement indicates that the ice stream was confined in the North Sea Basin, possibly by the presence of Scandinavian Ice.  相似文献

Boundary Bay tidal flats on the inactive southern flank of the Fraser Delta have surface sediments consisting almost entirely of very fine to fine, well to very well sorted sands which show a gradual fining-shorewards trend. Five floral/sedimentological zones form distinct biofacies. These are, from the shoreline seaward, the saltmarsh, algal mat, upper sand wave, eelgrass and lower sand wave zones. The lower limit of the saltmarsh lies at a constant level above which the maximum duration of continuous exposure rises abruptly from ~ 12 to 40 days. Similarly, at the lower limit of the algal mat zone the maximum duration of continuous exposure jumps from 1 to ~ 2 days, and at the upper limit of the eelgrass zone from ~ 0·5 to ~ 0·8 days. These correlations between exposure and zonation are suggested to be causal. In the algal mat and eelgrass zones microtopography of biogenic origin, only a few centimetres high, creates lateral heterogeneity within the zonal biofacies. In the upper sand wave zone, very low amplitude (a~ 0·1 m) symmetrical sand waves (λ~ 30 m) of probable storm-wave origin have a similar effect. In the lower sand wave zone, sand waves (a~ 0·5 m, λ~ 60 m) are formed by tidal currents or wave action and physical sedimentary structures dominate over biogenic ones. The densities of the following macrofaunal organisms which produce distinctive biogenic sedimentary structures were determined on two surveyed transects: Callianassa californiensis and Upogebia pugettensis, both thalassinidean shrimps; three polychaete worms, Abarenicola sp., Spio sp. and Clymenella sp.; the bivalve Mya arenaria and the gastropods Batillaria attramentaria and Nassarius mendicus. Callianassa excavate unlined temporary feeding burrows, whereas Upogebia build mud-lined permanent dwelling burrows. Upogebia are restricted to below mean sea-level where continuous exposure is < 0·5 days, whereas Callianassa extend up to a level, just below mean higher high water, where maximum continuous exposure rises abruptly from 4 to 9 days. This difference in range is probably due to the latter's greater anoxia tolerance—a necessary adaptation for life in an unlined feeding burrow.  相似文献
